So I got the turbo and mani out, replaced the gaskets (the turbo flange gasket that connects to the manifold was fried), and plopped it all back in. Made triple sure everything was tight and good to go, fired her up, and damn. So awesome. It's like driving a brand new car. She's never had this much power. Boost is better, stronger and harder. Idle is smoother. Car runs quieter. Wow. It's so awesome.

All for $50 (mani and flange gaskets...thanks Wayne! and 10 hours of my time...I went slow.

at the start...so much crap to take out.

I begining to think that those gaskets are a wear item. I had to replace mine and I know of 2 other SR's that had to do the same. Veird. I know how you feel though. My car went super fast after I replaced it.

PS.
2540 will hopefully go on next summer. I still need.

You are so right. I think they last a few years though. I think when I put my new turbo in next summer, I'm going to get a nice mani, and then not use a gasket. You don't need one if everything is machined smooth enough. So I'll just make sure it's smooth and say F it.

Super fast is an understatement. Dude, I feel like I added 50 hp! Well, the sad part is that I was driving around WITHOUT that power for so long. Especially the last 2 weeks when the gasket was REALLY blown.

I put lock washers on EVERYTHING...so hopefully shit won't come loose this time.

mmmm....2540. sweet. I'm just going to have an S14 BB running at 12 psi...that's all I want. Power FC. Mmmm. You will love the Koyo...get the FAL 210's too (be like me). You don't have a high-flow pump yet? WTF? Whoa. I want that exhaust mani and outlet pipe too. We'll have the same setup except you'll have a computer and a really sweet turbo. Nice.

Have you thought about grabbing an s15 turbo. I'm sure you can find one for a little more than an s14. If not I have a friend who's buying an s14 motorset. He's already got a turbo and might be able to sell you the s14 one for a good price.

Yeah, stockie fuel pump hasn't givin me any problems yet. I deffinatly want to be safe when I upgrade turbo though.

Who really wants a 2835 instead

I'm already buying the turbo...a really clean super nice one...from Justin up in Wisconsin. He's letting me pay him by installments, as I don't really need the turbo right away, but this makes sure I stay focused. But I still need a nice front mount and whatnot before I pop it in there. I'd get the S15 one, but they are basically the same and the one I'm getting is from a friend, and really really really clean. My school's server is down right now, so I can't show you pics of it. damn. Is my avatar working? Weird.

James, I didn't work outside. A buddy of mine let me use his garage (he was heading to Rockford with his wife for the week). Thank God. I would have been cold. But it actually wasn't THAT bad...we had the door open for most of the weekend. It just got cold at the end...snowed last night.

You don't have to crosspost I just posted here and there because I thought people might like to know. I'll have pics of the gasket later...can't upload to my server space right now.

I did the same thing about a month ago and now the ride is great then I blew the gasket between the downpipe and the elbow so now the turbo is "whistling" when it spools ::very annoying::

yeah, mine sounded like a screaming chicken for a few days. so lame. then the hole opened up even more and it just sounded like a big truck with an exhaust leak. fock. it felt like i was driving a total beater.

P.S. look at the pics

Why would you skimp on a gasket if you have everything super-smooth? I really think that you should gasket everything just to be supersafe.
Also... What material is that new gasket? I would recommend that you get the asbestos-metal-asbestos gasket sandwich stuff. The withstand heat extremely well and compress with bolt torque, making a good seal. Only downside is that asbestos gasket material is hard to find. You'll have to go to a mechanic shop, and hopefully know someone there. Asbestos is the only stuff I haven't blown on my car yet.

It wouldn't be "skimping". If the surfaces are smooth enough, you don't need a gasket for the exhaust. And this is just one less piece to burn up...since obviously the OEM gasket isn't up to the task for the long haul. I would expect a gasket to outlast a turbo, wouldn't you?

I might look in to those asbestos gaskets...but I'm not sure at this point.

Looks good Eric. I will have to take a picture of my gasket when I pulled it out! There were only 3 holes left the entire corner was gone.... LOL The main thing that kills them is the bolts come loose and let the exhaust gases out through the side. The heat just burns them up. Yours was in a really bad place too, hard to find it when it points back towards the manifold like that. Glad to hear it was a fairly easy/cheap fix! Look for new pics of my car in a month or so..........not saying exactly what my plans are but will be a mid power setup. Then the new engine for the high power setup will have to wait until this summer...

Have fun!!

Asbestos IS good for it's heat properties.......BUT it's very bad for you if it wears. It can cause a whole crapload of problems. Asbestosis is probably on of the worst.

Hey guys, I'm going to change my exhaust mani gasket and turbo inlet gasket tomorrow. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions to make the process go faster/smoother? Thanks in advance.
