So i thought i'd just throw this out there... im a little "picky" according to my friend and it's really jsut cuz i have a SUPER busy schedule and i like to watch anime to wind me down or when i eat but it's so hard to get into another good anime when you're waiting on new eps or when the one you've been watching is done. . . so i thought i'd just ask you guys for your opinions

for an idea on some of my favorites to reference to (in no particular order) are:

Samurai Champloo
Death Note
Full Metal Panic (ALL OF THEM)
Full Metal Alchemist (except when the evil scientist dude kills his own daughter, that was whack~)
GTO (great teacher onizuka) FUNNY AS HELL!!
Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop
Kenshin
Naruto (except for the fillers and the extremely dragon ball long fight scenes)
Bleach (except for the fillers =i)

Macross Frontier (too muh waiting cuz it's not done)
Soul Eater (also too much waiting)

I used to watch the shit out of Cowboy Bebop and Dragonball Z.

Then I graduated middle school... and haven't watched any since. Except over last summer my buddy tried to get me to watch Naruto and it was really meh. Most predictable story of all time and childish art style. No thanks.

Gunslinger Girl. Awesome story and great violent animation. Really graphic with a very captivating storyline.

This thread is about good anime, not just list all the anime you've watched, right? Just checking.

kindaichi shounen no jikenbo - Really good detective anime. Its about the grand son of a really famous detective going around with a cop and his friend to try and solve different cases that happen to fall on him.
http://myanimelist.net/images/anime/10/3741l.jpg

Bus Gamer - Interesting anime. Guys are all forced to team up with each other in a life or death type game where the prize is a ton of money. Every rank in the game they go up, the higher the prize is. Kind of like who wants to be a millionaire, except there's lots of beating each other up and killing :P
http://myanimelist.net/images/anime/8/5512l.jpg

Hellsing Ultimate - I know this may be blasphemous, but I didn't enjoy the original Hellsing series too much. It jumped around way too much and kind of muddled the actual story, but that's where Ultimate made up for it. They follow the series in the first 2 of 4 episodes, but the last 2 episodes have been nothing but Alucard whooping ass and taking names, and it ALL MAKES SENSE!!!!
http://myanimelist.net/images/anime/6/7333l.jpg

Naruto Shippuden - I mention this one moreso than the original, because Naruto's childishness was getting really flipping annoying IMO. However, the 4th movie that just came out made me really appreciate the series more. That and it made me research a song with a JDM afro and a wanna be Michael Jackson...
http://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/3/2011.jpg
JDM afro song (ending song to the Naruto Shippuden Movie) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ki0yOXvfO8

Hayate no Gotoku - A story of a no-luck boy who suddenly has to become the butler to a spoiled rich girl. He has to do such daily tasks as cleaning, cooking, maintaining the girl's image, doing battle with assassins, and piloting giant robots. This anime makes the most puns on animes, worse than Yakitate Japan, which brings me to my next one :)
http://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/manga/4/682l.jpg

Yakitate! Japan - If you never thought an anime about making bread could be extremely funny and still manage to be extremely good in terms of plot-line, continuity and character development, then you've never seen Yakitate! Japan. Story is about a boy who has a rare gift among bakers (Solar hands) which enable him to make some amazing bread. He embarks on a journey to make a bread that only Japan could be known for (Like how france has "french bread). Its incredibly funny, and also gives lots of actual explanation about certain professional baking techniques, along with a little clip at the end about making the bread at home (including making a loaf of bread with a rice cooker... Name me ANY other anime that will do that!)
http://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/manga/2/60l.jpg

Claymore - Lastly, this symbol of ownage. Very nice, indepth story centering around a half demon-half human demon hunter and her human companion. The claymores are outcasted by human society, but depend on them when demons invade their village. Unique system, but the Claymore's still do their job. Demons are all over, as Clair (the main character) searches far and wide for the demon that killed her former master Teresa.
http://www.boontan.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/claymore.jpg

Now I'm also a sucker for those high school drama type anime's for some reason, so I also recommend series such as:
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Kimikiss - Pure Rouge
School days
Saishuuheiki Kanojo (AKA Saikano)

Those titles... All extremely jacked up. I cried watching Saikano, at almost every episode...

Tokimeki Memorial - Cute anime, typical high school drama, except you have a crazy chicken that does a dragonball type move at the very end. Its pretty cool though, I actually do recommend this series

Just for sheer bad assness:
You're Under Arrest! Full Throttle (I didn't see the original)
Shakugan no Shana
Ghost Hunt
Fate / Stay Night
Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Black Blood Brothers

And lastly, Dai Mahou Touge. This anime is just wrong on so many levels... The princess of magic land goes to Earth to learn about her future kingdom. She is the cutest thing ever, especially in personality, except when she's "forced" into combat situations, then she becomes a ruthless, merciless killer.... She uses a magic wand that's a candy cane to bring things like vegetables to life to murder, or if she's forced to, she becomes a godlike pro-wrestler... I can't quite explain this, but this youtube clip will explain everything:

Will's favs:

All time:
Magic users club : old but good happy fun anime
The Fruits Basket: interesting piece of life anime
Macross (1983): my favorite love triangle/ mech show
Armored Trooper Votoms: realistic mecha action in the 80's
Macross Plus: awesome hand drawn and cgi air combat

Current:
Gundam 00 - very well done gundam wing for the 21st century
Macross F: one of the most expensively produced anime i've ever seen

I really hate 99.98% of anime, because I think it's poorly drawn and poorly animated. That being said, I do have to give props to the Now and Then, Here and There series, because the story line is fucking amazing. That and Princess Mononoke is really epic.

Other than that, vampire hunter d is cool. The street fighter cartoon is awesome too, but I don't know if that counts as anime.

I'm pretty sure he was joking about the first part.

I loved the first Battle Royale, but the second one was an absolute abomination of a movie. Greatest dissapointment ever.

My favorite animes:

Heroic Age
Macross Frontier
Eureka 7
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

My least Favorite animes:

Stuff that is manga derived, aka
Dragon Ball Z
Naruto
Bleach
etc...

Mainly because the manga moves so slowly that they have to artificially slow the anime down somehow to compensate...so what do they do?

How bout 15 minute stair downs between two characters before a fight? Or 5 minute recaps of the previous episode? Or Filler episodes that are poorly written and animated?

I think there is about 10 minutes of content in a 30 minute show with manga derived animes.

Sure, as a manga, Bleach, Naruto, DBZ, etc are amazing....but as Animes...they suck balls.

id typically agree with that but macross 7 has sullied kawamori's reputation in my mind. macross frontier kicks ridiculous amounts of ass however, so i guess he's redeeming himself. episode 7 was incredible. this is definitely the best macross since the original and plus. i think it might even be better than plus. its what 7 should have been. next ep looks like its gonna tie in to zero... should be interesting what they have to say about it.

gurren lagann was over the top ridiculosity. 3rd arc was a bit weak but i loved the plot advance they did mid way through; very nice ending as well.

besides macross frontier i'm fairly hooked on code geass r2. and killing time with slightly pornographic comedies kanokon and to-love-ru.

Wow, what a cool thread.
It really has been quite a while since I watched anything anime related.
But this sure is bringing back a lot of memories of cool shows!
I think it is definitely time I get back into it!
Always fun to watch and escape reality for a bit.

A lot of cool recommendations in here for sure.
For some reason I really enjoy anime from the 80s and early 90s before computers played a huge part in the animation and overall feel.
The details and design seem so much better and technical looking in the older animes. Like AKIRA and GHOST IN THE SHELL for example.

Been wanting to check out BARI BARI DENSETSU for a while but cannot seem to find any downloads nor one that is subtitled. Awesome animation and it is from the creator of Initial D, Shuichi Shigeno. It deals with motorcycle racing. From 1986.

-cowboy bebop was awesome, music, animation, and storyline were great
-mononoke is a classic that needs to be watched and is even still good by today's standards
-ninja scroll is the standard by people's "introduction into anime" but now that i'm of age. . . it's just soft porn and there are a lot better animes out there
-initial d . . . was good maybe for like the first 5 minutes . . . into the first episode . . . and then it got boring really fast with badly repeated computer animated racing scenes, etc.

it's been a LONG time since i had Viz catalogs coming to my house and traded bootleg tapes of Ranma in the mail because the real ones were like 30 bucks each.
i saw that NGE thread and realized i had never watched Evangelion. i've now watched the first 13 episodes and plan on finishing the series in short order.
my buddy Rob, who taught English in Japan for a year and can't stop jerking off to RPG's and bubble tea, for whatever reason recommended i watch Air Gear. so i watched a few episodes, and man, it's shitty. i think he likes it because it has nudity, and he's a conservative christian who won't go to the titty bar with us.

cliffs:
Evangelion = this is really old and i'm just now watching it, wtf
Air Gear = this is new and it's really shitty, but has boobs
I also keep noticing the kids what with the cat-ear hoodies and the body odor talking about something called Fooly Cooly, which i've found has six episodes, so i'll probably crank through that.
has anyone watched Gunsmith Cats? this is another show that i somehow missed when it was new. you know what? i don't think i ever even finished Trigun. and for that matter, i've never seen an episode of Cowboy Bebop.

what other CLASSIC series have i missed? do not say Tenchi, because that shit is gay.

i tried to watch Air Gear a few months ago because i randomly picked it off a anime stream site.. yeah i thought it was pretty gay.. Its hard to jump into new series, most of teh plots have been done b4 so they tend to be cookie cutters.

I watched a few episodes of Skip Beat! , wasnt bad.. Teenage girl decides to get into show business as revenge for the guy she liked who eventually dumped her when he got famous. Was pretty cool but than got annoying because she whines too much.

Eureka 7- was pretty cool. Damn near all the airships and mechs in it are named after old school Analog Roland drum machines and synths and its got a whole rave theme running throughout it.

Cowboy Bebop is a total classic

Fooly Cooly is by far one of the best short series animes ever done.

Trigun was good

Ok... on Air Gear... Don't watch it. Read it. The anime is horseshit. The manga is the hot shit.

The hottest anime out right now is Full Metal Achemist: Brotherhood. It's the best thing I've seen in like... a decade.

The original Full Metal Alchemist vaguely stuck to the manga up until about halfway thru, then from episode 26 on, it was all filler bullshit and a filler movie.

The new FMA show starts with 15 episodes to recap the "true" parts on the original anime and then from there it follows the manga precisely. If you're not watching or reading FMA... you're missing the best thing out.

Other woefully underrated shows:
Full Metal Panic
Black Lagoon
Karas
Hellsing Ultimate
Scryed
Read or Die / Read or Dream (watch the OVA before you watch the show)

These 2 aren't underrated, but recommended viewing:

I was wondering about checking out Eureka 7, but you saying Devil May Cry was good means I can't trust your opinion. That show sucked ass. Considering the DMC was produced by Madhouse, the same anime studio that made shows like X, Ninja Scroll, Hajime No Ippo and more... I expected more. The story was terrible... alot like Blade of the Immortal anime.

Bleach is decent viewing. Naruto is definently better. The problem with Bleach is that it doesn't do well at a adding good story go with all that action. It's like the creator of Bleach kinda throughs in some intrigue and drama as an afterthought. It comes off feeling like a slightly more intelligent DragonBall Z.

Gundam... I avoid like the plague. Very few mecha shows are on my recommended viewing list. Most of them just don't bring anything new to the genre. The only mecha shows I recommend are Evangelion, Full Metal Panic and Macross.

GATSU!!!! Fucking shit up.

Fuck yes... Berserk was awesome. I like shows that bitchslap you when you think you know whats going on...

I also forgot about Samurai Champloo which I thoroughly enjoyed. I don't care what anyone says what I like about Bleach is the whole interplay between Ichigo, Rukia and Orihime that never quite gets resolved. Its like on one hand Ichigo is totally there for Rukia and then you now Orihime secretly loves him, and he is there for her too.

I don't care what anyone says what I like about Bleach is the whole interplay between Ichigo, Rukia and Orihime that never quite gets resolved. Its like on one hand Ichigo is totally there for Rukia and then you now Orihime secretly loves him, and he is there for her too.

Of course call me strange but I favor Rukia.

Is it because Rukia looks more Asian lol. Anyways back on topic, Im surprised no one has mentioned (ninja edit bubbles mentioned Death Note) or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya yet. Lucky Star is pretty funny if you are into weird anime lol. Mahou Sensai Negima was ok too but the manga is better.

i recommend a show called "akagi". it revolves around mahjong, but understanding mahjong isn't required, because the show focuses on the psychological and mind game stuff. the drawing style is unique, maybe a little offputting at first. and the titular character is badass.

mononoke (different from princess mononoke, but all miyazaki stuff is cool too) has awesome art style and interesting stories.

astro fighter sunred
shin mazinger
gungrave
samurai champloo

those are my favourites from the last few years. most new stuff is pretty crap.

Claymore was interesting, but I can't watch shows with bad soundtracks. And that show's sucked.

Every show that I've recommended is not only good, but also guaranteed to have a badass soundtrack that you probably wouldn't mind listening to on the side...

update
my nerdiest buddy and i are going to start Anime Night on thursday nights. some of his suggestions, some stuff that stuck out to me, watched while playing Dominion or chess or whatever we feel like. we'll be sampling the following this week:

Gurren Lagann
Air Gear
Code Geass
Gunslinger Girl
Gunsmith Cats
BECK Mongolian Chop Squad

also, i remember watching this one show where these guys were fighting spirits or zombies or some shit, might have been a special police task force... there was a chick with a sword, it felt kind of like Bleach in nature... i know this is incredibly vague but can anybody help?

...oh, and i read a while back that Funimation is going to be re-dubbing Initial D, and they're going to do the whole series. hopefully they won't give it aural HIV like Tokyopop did... i still haven't watched Fourth Stage yet, i think i'm going to wait until the Funimation dubs show up.
....fuck subtitles, i'm not Japanese.

I just remembered that Funimation has it's own TV network.

Yeah, and seriously, that Tokyopop I.D. sub was so so trash.
Stage 4 was boring.

Ive never seen Full Metal Panic but if you want love-hina style stuff you will like Negima (both were made by the same guy). It follows the story of a wizard kid who has to teach at an all girls school to get his wizards certification. His class is very unique and consists of sluts, a lesbian, a bi chick, a robot, a ninja, a vampire, a total bitch, emo chicks, nerds, a ghost, ect.

Initial D - Loved it, my buddy who doesn't care about cars liked it.

Code Geass - First anime I watched during which I realized anime existed.

Cowboy Bebop - Amazing.

Samurai Champloo - Also amazing, maybe even more than CB, which puts me in a rare crowd.

GTO - Solid. Felt a little slow in the middle at times.

FLCL - Didn't get it, may try it again.

Death Note - So good. A ton of progression, plenty of surprises. Love the character L.

Akira - Overhyped, I wasn't impressed.

Michiko to Hatchin - Didn't like the end. I had high hopes going into it.

sounds corny and funny, but its pretty badass. the only downside is that it is a 6 (58 minute) episode series. the real kicker is that only 2 episodes are coming out yearly. episode 2 is supposedly due autumn 2010.

I would recommend trying to read the manga first. The show assumes you get the gist of what's going on and just throws you in.

I can't explain at all why I like FLCL. There is nothing I can even think to criticize it for.

I've read a couple volumes of the GTO manga. While I didn't dig the art style(SUPER eye brows for one thing) I did like the writing.

Has any one here seen SLAMDUNK! ? I got hooked on it while living in korea. I've never seen the whole thing though. It seems like every time some one gets the rights to show it in N. America they go under.

I only ever watch what shows up on Adult Swim when I have a chance. Anything that involves giant fighting robots or wandering around a forest forever fighting random monsters is really boring to me, so shows like Big O, Gundam, Inuyasha etc are just meh.

Bleach is ok, haven't really gotten into the plot (seems to be more wandering around fighting monsters), but I like the style of some the animation.
Akira is ok.

Trigun is good
Cowboy Bebop is good
FLCL is good. (I suppose I like it because it's short, so it's not a bunch of filler. Also, the animation style is all over the place, it's very idiosyncratic)
Lupin the 3rd is good.

AdultSwim used to be great for anime but these days they aren't doing to hot. They played death note and blood+ to death and I don't really like either of those. They don't have any comedy(shin-chan was great) or serious action.

I will give them Moribito. That is a great show.

You love GITS and FLCL but dislike DeathNote.

Our tastes are what you would call........................different.

lol

I watched it but it was too slow. It has great themes and characters but whole episodes of discussing info you already know in long unending scenes.

It gets that way for a lil while. Like most anime's they have their intro's that sometimes take awhile to hook you. Light pulled off some bad ass shit later in the series tho, hell even earlier in the series.

That is what I did like. It is a very smart show. Just sloooow.

Blood+ is a train wreck. No redemption in my book. So many better shows they could broadcast, shows they already have the rights for.

I'm 30 episodes into HNO, it's awesome but getting repetitive.

So I watched both Vampire Hunters, the first one is alright but the second one is completely b to the a, sooo good.

Thinking of trying to get into multiple shows at the same time, instead of watching one all the way through.

40 episodes into HNO and it's good but for some reason I can't marathon it or go crazy on it.

Watched all of Gungrave, it has a nearly identical scene along with Kill Bill, I wonder which came first.

Watched 3 episodes of Afro Samurai, that shit is ballin. It should be longer.

Watching Fist of the north star right now its old school, ive seen some eps before but im trying to watch it all the way through on ep 93 right now.

It gets pretty repetitive in the earlier episodes but the story gets more in depth later well as much as an early 80s anime can, also watching FMA brotherhood as its released.

I watched Buso Renkin about a month ago i really enjoyed it and would recommend it, was written by the same guy who did Rurouni Kenshin.

My bro just bough the Gungrave box set so I am about to have at that.
Watched the first episode so far. SICKKKK.

If Gungrave would have taken the entire show's action scenes and cut them into two full episodes and cut out all story, I would have been happier.

no way man ! sometimes the story was slow and boring but i think when you got to the end of the series all the character development and seeing everyone change really made it a great series, i especially liked the ending

Good thing I found this subject. n_n I have seen a LOT of anime. Here's a list:

G Force: Back when I was ignorant about anime.
Sailor Moon: THE anime that got me to anime.
Pokemon: Still watch it every now and then.
G Gundam: My favorite of Gundam series.
The 8th MS Team: My other favorite Gundam series.
Gurren Lagann: Loving it! Starting second arc. (Now on SyFy)
DBZ: Why not?
Initial D: Seen a few episodes, but fun to watch.
Wangan Midnight: Still a few episodes to go. Great series.
FLCL: Short but straight to the point.
Evangelion: Hardcore. Wanna watch the movies.
Rurouni Kenshin: It has everything.
Code Geass: Both arcs had lots of twists, and the final ending is shocking.
Lucky Star: LOL, indeed. Need to be into J-pop culture, though.
Haruhi Suzumiya: You gotta love that girl.
Witchblade: Hot action and plenty of mystery.
Eureka Seven: Loved the series.
IGPX: Mech battle racing! Nuff said.

I could say more, but the list would be slightly longer, and these are the ones that come to mind.

Way to revive a dead thread. You better get used to the idea of rewatching all that old anime, cause I got a feeling we're not gonna be getting any new content for a long while. Waaay bigger stuff going on right now in Japan... I saw a link a few days ago with anime/manga creators checking in to confirm they were still alive after the quake & tsunami. That's the important thing: Human life. Not our little hobby...

Currently watching Freezing (uncensored).. there is a good bit of fan service in it but it's quality so far...

Bleach...

As to running out of anime due to japan earthquake.. not likely.. most shows are drawn in other countries.. ie china, vietnam etc. cheap labor..
