are you asking because..
a) you're building your own engine. if so....stop where you are. send everything to a good engine builder to have him do it.
b) just curious and want to learn...in that case...just google it... or just check out www.howstuffworks.com they should have something on there for you.
the rings fit into groves in a specific order and way.

go take a quick peek at a fsm.
it'll show you how the ring gaps need to line up.

Depends on the type of ring as far as orientation. you want to keep the break in the rings apart so if you have say three compression rings the "split" part of the ring would be every 120 degrees. generally it doesnt have to be exact, but you really want to make sure they dont line up - otherwise you'll get blow-by.
That said, if you are building an engine, find an old school mechanic (one who has rebuilt engines) or an old school machinist and try and pick up some tips or go buy one of those engine rebuilding books.. or practice on a lawnmower first. The reason I say old-school is they are usually more willing to help, and arent out to rip someone off. "usually"

Compression rings have an up-side and a down-side. Contact the manufacturer of your rings to make certain.

If you look at a piston, the load/wear locations are the skirt sides. Ive built many an engine professionally, and have always tried to alternate the ring openings every 180 degrees. Keeping the ring gaps away from the load sides of the piston. So you start with the first gap lined up on the wrist pin side, and alternate 180 degrees for each ring. The top two rings usually will have marks on the side of the ring that faces up.
