View Full Version : Do 1 way cusco LSD's clunk and make noise?

I currently have my cusco RS diff (installed in s13 pumpkin on my s14) set to 2way but it kinda skips and clunks around corners making it kinda difficult to accelerate around corners.
I was wondering if I switch the cams to the 1 way position if it will still make the clunking and skipping...?
How is drifting with the 1 way? I LOVE the 2way but for daily driving it kinda bugs...
Is it possible the S13 pumpkin (which does NOT have diff bushings unlike the S14) is not giving the diff enough movement creating additional clunking?
I'm thinking about swapping to a s14 pumpkin...
Any input is appreciated...
Thanks

You don't want a one way.
All diffs lock a little on deceleration. Even VLSD's.
One ways are for FWD.
Your subframe is what's responsible for holding the differential bushings. S13 subframes don't have any space for them, so you couldn't run an S14 rear cover.
If you can't handle how a 2 way clunks get a viscus. You're just going to have to live with it if you want an awesome LSD.
One thing you can do to quiet it down is add some friction modifier. You can get it at at any ford or GM dealer. They sell it in little bottles, and you add it to you diff fluid when you change it out.

get a Carbon diff and it will engage much smoother, worth the extra $$$$ IMO

350Z guys tested a bunch of Diff Oils and found that MOTUL is the best for quieting the clunk.

Ive tried the ford friction modifier with no results...
I am using an s13 pumpkin with an s14 diff cover...lots of people do it...
So you guys dont think the lack of diff spacers is causing additional clunking? I can def feel the diff more and it makes the clunking more responsive...
Ive been driving it like this for like a year now and just dont like how it sounds like rocks rolling around in there when shifting around a turn and the notchiness feeling I get....
So 1 ways are no good?
Right now I plan on keeping this diff.... I dont feel like dishing out for a carbon one and viscous is just shit.

I know if you get some thicker fluid it can quiet it down a lot. I'm working on getting my OS Giken 1.5 way in now, I emailed the company and they recommend not running less then 75W125 oil.

I used to run the 75w140 redline oil and it did not make a difference....

the clunking isn't even that bad.. only under low speeds while turning.

ive used both s13 and s14 diff housings and it doesn't make a difference, its all simply from the clutch plates having to slip because the slower moving wheel isn't slipping

If you are afraid of a little clunking and harshness, why are you building your car like a track car and driving it on the street?
Stick to open or VLSD for a daily driver if you're worried about diff noise.
People always want the best of both worlds... well that doesn't exist in this case.

never said I was afraid of it.... was just wondering if a one way clunked or not and if a s13 housing would make a difference.....
If a one way continues to clunk or is just shitty to use then I will stick with what I have...
thx for the useless post...
