View Full Version : bad sputter under boost

The engine stuttered a bit at idle but still boosted ok. then I was boosting and all the sudden now the car just sputters like crazy when I try to boost. There is no power just sputtering.

Oh and now all the sudden my power windows and taillights do not work. I checked the fuse and it was fine.

I am very depressed now, any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

check vacuum leaks

vacuum leaks huh? I checked all the piping and its good. I also checked the hoses to boost controller and blow off valve. everything is fine. where else would or should I check

Thanks

what's your spark plug gap? if it's too high, you'll misfire under boost. might want to lower it.

The problem there is that it was boosting totally fine. I was doing a couple 360 drifts and there was kind of a popping sound. I parked, everything seemed fine. When I went to drive away, no power and all the sputtering when I boost

yeaa it could be blowing out spark.

check everything.

maf, maf plug, spark plugs, boost leaks, vacuum leaks.

i had a KA-t setup do the same thing, it turned out to be some cooked plug wires.

cooked plug wires? How would I check if it is that? And what are the common places boost leak and vacuum leaks occur?

Thanks alot guys

check if your blow off valve is actually sealing and holding boost.. the same thing happened to me and it was the bov, sometimes they dont shut all the way and give you a massive boost/vaccum leaks.. also check your turbo it could be damaged

yeah i think the turbo could definately be damaged but it is so wierd that it seems fine just cruising but the minute I boost the motor just sputters like its completely missfiring

thats how my car was acting recently, but i retuned w/ my SAFC and now im running fine

check air leaks first.
what MAF/tuning are you using?
what volts does your car have at idle?
im assuming its warm where you live (palm springs), are you running one step colder plugs?
is your O2 sensor reading? check an exhaust leak at the turbine (manifold or DP)

if none of those, then idk what to tell you. was it running ok before, or has it always been like this since you put the SR in?

no tuning at all you think that might fix it?

I have not checked the volts

Im running the stock NGK plugs for SR20

That is so weird. The same thing happened to mine earlier this week. The sputtering and the power windows/gauges/lights all stopped working at the same time. LMK if u figure out what it was.

are you freaking serious!?! likewise man if you figure it out lemme know
WTF!? lol

what car of yours did this happen to?

your engine harness is grounding out somewhere. probably hitting/chaffing the intake manifold.

if your accessories are not working, that means your power connection to the positive battery plug isn't connected correctly.

check the harness in the driverside fender for bare wires or cut wires
also you say you were boosting then heard a pop then had no power
sounds like your piping blew off
or your bov blew up
double check your intercooler piping

check all the above mentioned things then get back to us

Ignition Coil Pack Ground.

Your losing spark.

Probably the back of the coil pack ground on the head backed out or became loose. Make sure you have good earth.

...something to think about.

Another word of advice, and this goes to anyone with a boosted car. Get a wideband, it will help you diagnose a lot of your boost related issues.

steve shadows

Yeah but this kind of sputter shouldnt be fuel related, unless the fuel pump is dying. completely

alright all intercooler piping is a-ok!

I drove it on the freeway today and now it will not accelerate at all! It was humming along the same as yesterday just no power sputter surges when I tried to boost or anything over like 3k. Then after about 45min of driving it slowly started to slow down and no matter how much throttle I gave it, it would sputter and surge and not want to go.

The car barely wants to go forward now, it is beyond messed up

I am going crazy! Is there anywhere you guys recommend I take it for diagnostic? S13 SR20 Redtop in 92' Fastback.

Thanks again for everything so far guys I appreciate it

i had the same sputtering/misfire issue. turns out it was my air filter because the screws holding it to the mafs broke and it kept falling off. apparently, my z32 mafs didn't like that. i found it really weird especially because the air filter is before the mafs, but i secured the air filter and it went away permanently. in my case, i know for a fact that it was the air filter, because it kept misfiring everytime after i did a burnout because the filter would fall off.

that actually was the issue first. but I zip tied the pipe to the turbo (I know super lame) but now it doesn't come off and it does it worse than it has ever done it before.

the reason it would run bad with no air filter before the maf is that the air filter smooths out airflow so the maf can read it, a long straight pipe would work too

check that your main chassis ground is nice and tight.

very true, even the slightest leak anywhere upstream of the 02 sensors will make it run like shit

Check the wire harness in your fender above your tire. It sounds like something was rubbing somewhere and is shorting out.

the problem is that I have never done a swap and don't really know what im looking at. I can do the turbo, suspension, stuff like that but the electrical is too confusing for me lol.

Does anyone know where I can take it to be checked out?

Thanks

80/hr for diagnostics and /repairs.

man you better learn real quick.. electrical diagnostics get REAL expensive REAL fast!

just like steve said, 80/hr for diagnostics (thats normal rate) and who knows how long it will take them to find anything....

Similar thing happened to my 240, ended up being a coil pack starting to go bad, missed under boost then just went out one day. if you got an extra or a friend that has some change them out and see.

dont mean to thread jack but mines kinda doin the same except it boosts then sputters at like 5k-6k. my vac seems fine i havent boost leak tested it yet. but i think my tps isnt workin right could that be the problem??

oh and driftapparrel check you maf and plug cause when mine went out i couldnt boost or go over 3k. tryin cleanin it wit CRC maf sensor cleaner

Ok yeah ill def try that. Thanks D.Bo! should I run a different MAF if it is bad? I occasionally hear about the Z32 MAF
