When the gears are engaged from neutral stand still the rear end clunks sometimes when car stops/goes too... i know im replacing subframe bushings.. however i think this feels/seems something with the driveshaft or lsd... its a vlsd...
Any ideas? What should I look for? What might the issue be?
Thanks...

Diff busshings. Go to home depo and get a couple of "shims" (washers) that will fit around the bolts so theres no play. I used two above and two below on each side. Im dropping my subframe today so I can take pictures if you need further explaination.

Man, I'm going through the same thing.
I have been thinking it was the diff bushings all along. I had the car up in the air while I was replacing the subframe bushings, and visually inspected them. I shook the diff and played around with the axles to come up with an answer...and thats what I narrowed it down to.
It only started to make a "clunk" when i installed my stance's.
Thanks for the suggestion OBEEWON...I'll try that this weekend.
EDIT: POST # 240!!!

could also be worn CV joints in the half shafts

what knid of vlsd do you have. is it a j30 s14 etc.......
if its a s14 or j3o. your diff bushing is bad. if the vlsd is abs you'll need the abs driveshaft.
those or the causes that would clunk.
warning check you subframe if its crack
this happened to me 3 times without doing what i said.

I looked into this being the reason for the noise also...
Question: Should the axle move in and out if I were facing the wheel hub and pushing it towards the diff ? I mean actually grabbing the axle and moving it back and forth. Mine does, and when i do this it makes the same noise I'm hearing. I push the axle towards the diff, no noise. Let it go, CLUNK....:-/

gprb25, it looks like YOUR problem may be your axle nut is loose. your axle should not have that much play. make sure your axle nut is tight, and have the cover that goes over the axle nut along with the cotter pin.

So the VLSD has always been on your car, or is it a mod??
Cause the S13 VLSD is like 1/2 inch longer than the open diff. So you dont need a new drive shaft, but there was a little sqeaking, clunking when I had done the swap. It went away after awhile though.
Have you checked under your car to make sure the carrier bushing is still good?? It makes that kind of sound too. with the same kind of reasons why.

Your drive line is a two piece deal. so it has a joint in the middle that flexes. the carier bushing holds the whole deal up against the car and keeps it from flopping around.
Alot of 240's end up needing this replaced or they just go to after market one piece drive shafts.
look up under your car, about a foot behind the tranny and you will see what Im talking about. is the rubber look decent??, or is it banged to all hell and the drive shaft is really loose in there. (the drive shaft will have some play, the rubber alows this, but not alot.)
BTW
a quik search on google, ebay and zilvia would have saved me the 2 minutes it took me to type this out and would have provided you with an instant answer.
