Sounds like you have a cylinder missfire, search for missfire to help you diagnose it. later

Massive vacuum leak. If you're turbo, check for a coupling that may have blown off.

check to see if the battery is grounded to the engine

sounds like misfire.. try correcting the timing .. injectors may be bad .. and a regular tune up should fix it.

Yeah its best to go to your local parts store and they can pull they code for you. The code will tell you what's wrong with the car. If you can tell us the code that would help us too.
thanks for the neg. maybe if you were smart enough to check your CEL, you wouldnt be asking in the first place.

cap, rotor, plugs, wires, injectors, and TIMING !!
p.s. a loose battery WOULD NOT make it smoke black AND MISFIRE......unless its on fire LOL

Dont do shit yet
What engine??
What car?? year??
Thats the first thing we need to know.
give me that and I will give you a list to work through. alot of these answers vary on what your answers to my questions are.
Like on a S13, you can pull the code yourself very easily. So why pay to hit up a shop and waste the gas.
sounds more like bad piston rings to me. what the condition of your spark plugs??
or it could hopefully be as easy as timing. two different ways to go. you know how to loosen your distributer and twist it just a touch, one way or another??
any recent work done to the car?
how many miles on it??
had the car long??
