Given that a diesel gets about twice the gas mileage, with the added bonus of a fuckton of torque for fun, YES, it is worth it to drive a diesel... I been thinking about getting a VW diesel for a few months here, I am just not able to fully commit to the idea yet.

I never look at how much gas is (and its not cause I'm ballin either)
I need it, no choice
And if you averaged it out over time, no matter where or how you filled up, it would always average out to a normal price
I know a lot of people who will drive out of their way, or an extra distance, just to save 5 cents per gallon, etc....which I don't see the need to do

are you telling me that its wrong to like to drive your car? i sometimes hop in my car just to take a ride because i'm bored, but i agree with you on the SUV nonsense, i see people in hummers on the freeway with only one person in them, WHY do you need an H2 that gets 3MPG to get to work and back?

Bah, remember I am very republican.
The "price" of oil is due to us dollar inflation vs the rest of the worlds currency. But the price of oil is still not all that relevant to the price of gas, the refining companies are charging a premium to refine because of high demand for refining and not enough capacity.
And on the "god damn republicans" front. The ONLY reason I voted for bush the second time was over soundbite of rumsfeld, cheney and bush saying they would subsidize iraqi oil to the US market, which didn't happen.
More on topic, if you are going to go bio-diesel, don't think you will be getting waste oil from any burger joints, they get paid for it because it is refined as well. But buying new at costco + additives is still cheaper than gas.

Somewhere around there, it sucks so much being a broke college student, DD'ing a 1989 Jeep cherokee that got 16 miles to the gallon when it was brand new, add 330,000+ miles, 19 years of depreciation, a tendency to idle at 1100-2700 rpm and being owned by a female with stereotypical car care habits (sis) and imagine what its getting now. At times I can literally drive to wal-mart to get food, which is less than 8 miles and see the needle move every so slightly:wtc:

I've never seen a station do that in my area. The gas business is very competitive and most stations are trying to beat each other by a penny or two (the busy locations anyway). Raising the price during rush hour is the last thing a station wants to do for it's reputation. In fact my competitors have even dropped their price by a penny or so for the busy weekend to try and steal more customers...
Premium is at 3.99 at my Chevron station near USC.

...If you want a bike for gas mileage do NOT buy a sportbike. On average my old 600RR got around 30-35ish mpg and my R6 gets somewhere around 30mpg..
You'll have to remember that these bikes are basically street legal race bikes.. I know on the track my gas mileage goes all to hell. :D
my bad, found some more reliable info that states a 03 600RR gets around 35~40mpg
looks like the quite smaller 125R is the hot ticket, anywhere from 60~75mpg... but thats what you should expect with such a small motor

As long as people keep quiet and say nothing the prices will keep going up.
Even if all the countries of the world are invaded by the US with oil, and theres so much abundance of oil, there will always be some media/government bullshit excuse to raise gas prices. Global warming, environment, taxes, war, shortage, too little oil, too much oil, train caught fire, baby fell in oil well. Whatever.

Do diesels really get double the gas mileage of gas cars? like 50+?

I'm really tierd of this comparison.
Europe is not as spralling as the United States
Shipping is more expensive when the ports of entry are 1000-3000 miles away from where goods need to be delivered.
Western and Central Europe combined isnt even as wide as the United States...
Western Europe Major has better access to local ports, better highways and more efficient vehicles and fuels for consumption.
We have crappier octanes, more fuel guzzling ways to transport goods and only 2 or 3 main ports of entry and they are at least 1500 miles away from the center of the coutnry.
NO MORE STUPID EUOR vs. US Gas price comparisons.
Once you convince yourself this is acceptable, it will just escalate.

With increased demand for diesel on the consumer side, prices for diesel have reach high prices (remember when it was cheaper than gasoline?) and independent truckers are feeling the crunch. It's only a matter of time when UPS, FedEx and other couriers start to pass the cost onto the consumer in practically everything we use.
I really wonder how much more the U.S. market can bare with these gas prices.
I've changed the way I spend my money and now I will probably have no life during the summer cause I can't go out since I live so far away from the good stuff haha :( but then again...like most things...i learn to adjust.

Yeah, prices have gone up, but it's still far from being an unmanageable expense. People will just have to learn adapt. Plan your errands better. Ease up on the gas pedal. Drive slower on the highway. Carpool. Seriously, the solutions are pretty simple, but most people are too lazy to make any changes, it's just easier to whine about it.
Like I said, when I started carpooling, I instantly cut my gas consumption by 1/3, it saves me over $100/month.
Driving slower on the freeway can make a huge difference. I'll give you an example. My wife used to own a '94 Taurus with a 3.0L V6. Mixed driving she would average about 23mpg. On pure highway miles, she'd get about 27mpg driving at 75mph. On one long road trip, we went 65mph instead, and we literally got 34mpg. That's a 25% increase. Just be smart people, and stop whining, we're still not even paying for the true cost of oil yet. Frankly, I'm looking forward to the improved mass transit options that more expensive gas will finally allow.

no it doesn't. at freeway speeds, most of your engine's power is going towards overcoming aerodynamic drag. and the aerodynamic drag is much greater at 75 mph than at 65 or 55. The old federally mandated 55mph speed limit was enacted for a reason, it saved gas after the OPEC embargo.

yeah but that either for cars with horrible aero dynamics or old pieces of shit... really all I was driving is your typical 4dr import with a 2.5L and I got the best mpg at 75.

You're still not getting it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_coefficient
Fd = .5*p*Cd*A*(V^2)
Fd = the force of drag
p = density of the air
Cd = Coefficient of drag (determined by shape of object)
A = frontal area of the object (if you have two spheres, but one has twice the cross-sectional area, it will have twice the drag)
V = velocity.
Notice that the force of drag is proportional to V^2 (the square of the velocity). That means if you double your velocity, you quadruple the force of drag. Therefore, for any car (regardless of aerodynamics), the car will experience 4 times as much aero drag at 40 mph than at 20 mph. It will also experience 4 times as much drag at 80 mph than at 40 mph.
at low speeds (around town) the effect of aero drag is negligible compared to frictional losses, deflection of tires, etc. But because aerodynamic drag increases so much with speed, at highway speeds it makes a big difference. You will have 30% more drag at 75mph than at 65mph, and double what you would have at 55mph.
Yes, if you have two cars travelling at the same speed, and one is more aerodynamic, it will have less aerodynamic drag. But that doesn't change the fact that if you double the speed, the drag will quadruple for each car.

In some case's... math just doesn;t add up.
I went 75 in many area's of my long road trip from cali to texas... and here is what I noticed
in area's where 80 is the speed limit... going 95 will kill your mpg...(like 23~25mpg)
in other area's listed as 65 is the limit, doing 75 did not hurt... in fact I posted higher mpg than what the car has ever seen (31 when it usually does 28)
maybe its constant speed thanks to the cruise button that also has an effect... but the car is my daily with no mods(except for slighty bigger wheels and a small tire stretch)
this is based on experience.

soooooo, did you even go 65 for long periods of time to determine your mileage? or just determine that 75 was better than 95?
yes I had a few sections of road where I had either a roller in front or behind me and as I got closer to large cities... most of this happened when I was going 75 so 75->65 and for a good 30~60 miles and this happened at least 3 times
it went down to 29mpg during that stretch... no stop and go was involved except for one city but I wasn't monitoring my mpg at that one.
most of the cali to texas was flat... except for one area of texas but I was doing 95 during that stretch.

GAS STRIKE ~~MAY 2ND ,try not to pump gas if you don't have too....
eastcoastS14
04-30-2008, 01:01 PM
^^ a gas strike would never work....for the simple fact that gas companies know that people will eventually have to fill up, the only way that would ever have any type of effect is if enough people stopped driving and started using public transportation that the gas companies actually felt the impact, which would be an awful lot of people....the same way that gas companies limit the supply of oil and gas...there isnt a shortage they just arent rushing to produce more, because they purposely limit the flow and adjust the price accordingly, gas companies could charge us super low prices if they wanted to....but then they wouldnt be filthy rich

any they raise the prices bc they can,...supply and demand...if we all stop buying gas for a week they will go bank rupt ine day the loose millions..ima buy a small motorcycle..get like 65 mpg.bs they only do it bc they can,..only two main companys that refine the shit. i still blame bush ..if it wasnt for the war and them fuckin up refineraries we would still be at a buck
Unfortunately this is the widely spread common thinking, plus the media warping your fragile mind.
The reality behind the gas price increase is that the price goes up because the manufacturers are trying to slow the consumption of the supply. For example:
You go out to buy a pair of shoes for $5.00, just because you would like to have new shoes. Well what if the price for that same pair of shoes cost $10.00, would you still buy it? Probably not. You may just decide that you can go for a little while longer before you actually NEED the shoes.
This is the basic logic behind price fluctuations. They are increasing the price with the hopes to slow demand, unfortunately basic economic principle isn't applying in today's world economy. It's the same for Rice, Wheat, and Corn. The prices are insane but the demand is not going to decrease just because of price. Gas is an essential item in todays world. And really when you think about it, the increase in the cost per barrell, from $80 or so to what it is today, about $118 a barrell, is not seen completely at the pump. We are looking at only about a 17% increase in the cost of gas in the past year.
While yes I agree that gas prices have gone up alot since 2005, the increase in price is relative to the economy. 4.00 a gallon is not that bad when you consider how much we pay for things we don't even need. Cable TV service upgrades can cost you about $60 - $80 dollars a month! Or how about movie tickets, $10.00 a ticket once a month for a year = $120.00 and that's if you go alone! with no snacks!
Just some info to try to keep this into perspective. Really it's just time to re-assess our budgets.
Oh and gas in Riverside is at 3.83 for 87, 4.03 for 91, at Food-4-Less. :)

our gas is supposed to hit 1.50 1.60 a liter this summer for regular and vancouver is i think the second highest prices in canada so really you guys don't have it that bad.
