View Full Version : what oil do you use

Please post up what type of oil you use on your 240 and why. I have a s14 240 and I don't know if I should go with the factory suggested oil. I have low mileage, any suggestions like maybe a super oil that cleans the inside of your motor would be helpfull. Just wanted to get an idea of what everyone is runnin and what ones they might of had problems with. You guys use K and N fuel filters on your Ka or what?

ps I know what oil to buy just wanted to see what you guys are runnin.

you can put any oil you want in your car that doesn't mean that its the best one for your car. There are many choices

this is not another what kind of oil do I put in my car post. This is a, what oil do you use and why? some oils claim to have cleaning agents in them, or are better for high milage cars. I just wanted to know why you went with the oil you did. But I gues you don't really notice a diffrence.

Royal purple 20w50 with a mobil one oil filter on my KADE. I use the royal purple because the smaller oil companies use better additive packages, and I use 20w50 because my car sees a good deal of track time and the thicker oil offers better protection at long periods of high engine temperatures. With mobil one my timing chain noise returns in 500 miles or so, with the royal purple it takes about 1500 miles. I use the mobil one oil filter because I trust their filtration technology above pretty much anyone else.

I found that PDF article off of a Aus commodore magazine that I have at the shop, iirc they have some newer tests.

They publish almost all of their articles, www.streetcommodores.com

I like British and Australian automotive press because they are not worried about taking swipes at OEM's or other Major Brands. All press state side won't actually measure any products against each other with real metrics. (sport compact car).

Well I'm using RP in my SR and Mobil 1 on my VQ and even though there different engines and the driving conditions I plan to send the samples to blackstone labs after I change them. I don't think that one is leaps and bounds over the other. I always use Nissan filters but I attempted to buy a Mobil 1 but I didn't know which one was for the S14 SR and the search function didn't help much.

Mobil Clean 5000 10w-40
No negative reviews on BobIsTheOilGuy (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/), Mobil has a good reputation with their "1" synthetic line, the "Clean" line of oil from Mobil is conventional oil and I didn't care to run synthetic since its going into a old high mileage KA that needs a rebuild anyways. I found this viscosity to work best for my engine, anything thinner and it seems to rev with a sort of vibration in the higher RPMs and anything thicker feels to heavy and revs slower.

Blue Nissan Oil Filter Made in Japan (http://www.zilvia.net/f/showpost.php?p=1676764&postcount=45) or Mobil 1 Oil Filter
I would use the blue Nissan oil filters that are Made in Japan and not China like the gray ones, but I may now be switching to Mobil 1 since its also good and its less hassle to get since I don't have to stop by the dealer.

Oh an when I was at sebring I saw a guy from cheveron or something and he had a display of a car with seprate fuel tanks with camers running right into the cams to show how there gas keeps internals from building up gunk. for some reason I thought it was an oil he used, I think because ive seen a comerical with some oil that cleans internals but whatever

Shell Rotella T 5W40 Synthetic....with a factory oil filter!!!

Funny you mention Rotella T.
Just finished rebuilding a KA and was wondering what oil to use to break it in.
Friend who's boss has been building cars for years recommended Rotella T - diesel motor oil. When I asked him why he said that the regulations for oils have changed recently and that some of lubricants in them were changed since they weren't too nice to the environment. New lubricants don't work as well, many people have complain of excessive wear on cams. Rotella T, being meant for diesel engines isn't affected by the changes and still has the old lubricants. KA fired up nicely yesterday.
After the break in I'll be using either Mobil or Royal Purple 10w30 with an oem filter.

Interesting read in the article posted. I run Mobil 1 10w30 and a Mobil filter. I actually used to run Fram filters (I know, I know, I didn't then though) for quite some time. My KA24DE had 156k miles on it when I bought the car, and now it has 248k on it and I've never been in it at all. I'll check into RP prices around here, but if it's much more, I'll stick with Mobil 1. It hasn't let me down yet (knock on wood).
