View Full Version : really weird turbo sounds

Umm, so yeah. Last night I got in my car and started driving home and there was this light tapping sound under boost. I immediately got very scared. But as I tested some things, I found that it was ONLY related to boost...not rpm. I can rev the engine in neutral and there are no sounds.
So today, I went outside and did some investigating. Took the heat shield off, and the compressor outlet elbow and had me a look-see. Nothing special. All the gaskets are there and things look decent.
Now the sound has changed: It's like a screaming chicken is under my hood when I boost!!!! I don't know what that means
My main concern is that I won't damage my motor. I'm already in the process of buying an S14 BB turbo, but I'm not planning to put it in until May. So can I keep driving like this?
Please, I need your thoughts.:nervous:

Boost leak?
Something caught in the turbo?
Wastegate problem?

could also be your bov..
is it a screeching sound at partial throttle?

it doesn't matter what the throttle is, really. if there's boost, there's crazy chicken sounds. i'm almost positive it's a gasket. i can hear and smell the evidence. damn. i didn't want to change this right now!!!

check your seals around your BOV
last week i had the same problem with my eclipse but it happened that my BOV was becoming unfastened
i have the blitz BOV and i didnt tighten it enough

Thats what I say to eric. I think it might be the seal that connects the BOV to the flange pipe. If that's the case a new gasket should be easy to come buy. Also try tightning the BOV. Maybe it's opening a little under boost.

you think so??? hmmm...i guess it could be that. but it really does sound like an out-of-control exhaust leak. i've always had a little bit of a leak, but now it's really bad. i'll check the BOV, though...as that would be much easier to fix.
thanks,
Eric

If it was the exhaust I would suspect you would hear it not only under boost but all the time. That's why I think it's the BOV.
An exhaust leak would sound more like a dying pig than a screaming chicken. Much deeper sound <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

well, i'll definitely check it out. but i still think it's exhaust related...since the *small* exhaust leak sound i used to have got much louder too. i think the whistle just happens because there is more backpressure when the turbo spools...and the turbo swirls the air all over the place.
but yeah, i'll check the BOV ASAP since it's easier. if it needs a new gasket, can I just make one out of something? or what do i do?

I had the same sound under boost when I had an exhaust leak between the elbow and the dp. It was annoying as hell

yeah, i'm thinking that's the one...it sounds like it's coming from there when i put my ear down there. shite. this is going to be such a biatch. i'm just gonna do ALL the gaskets if i'm gonna be tearing in to it. or can you think of a way to get that elbow in an out without taking out the turbo??? i can't seem to get at the bottom two bolts at ALL. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sneaky2.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hmmm.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hmmm:'>
