I need some help brothers. My cousin has a supra with a greddy fmic and got pulled over today. He got a ref ticket for his ic. Has this happened to anyone? Is the ic street legal? I never heard of this before.

think of it like this:

Do the evo's get a legitmate pull over for it?

Srt 4's? (like that dude said)

Fight it, the cop probably had a unicorn up his ass.

if it's a ref ticket, can't he just put stock shit back on and get the ticket waived?

hmm, time to paint that IC black!!!

front mounts are not illegal

ALEXTHESUS*PECT
04-03-2008, 07:25 PM
it's not the front mount that is really in question here. he is on cali, so if you aren't from you you've atleast heard the horror stories. i bet what te cop did was give your cousin the ticket thinking it was an illegal turbo swap, like sr's are, just to fuck with him. if it is a legal turboed car he nothing to worry about. show up in court with his current smog cert and he will be fine. fmic are cop magnets when hey look in the front of cars here in so cal. bu like i said if the car was turbo and is a legal swap he has no problems!

There are a few posts regarding street legal aftermarket parts in SupraForums. Check them out.

Your cousin is pretty much screwed. Unless he is lucky and can just pay a fine for the ticket. Or like 90 percent of the other people in cali you gotta go back to stock and go to the ref.

/\/\/\/\ truth
technically (and i've seen cases of asshole officers enforcing it) any non-oe part that can possibly modify emissions, that doesn't have a carb sticker, is illegal. i had a cop give me a ref ticket for having 8mm spark plug wires on my ae86; he said they were illegal cuz they were blue. i got them at fucking napa. i started giving him attitude (probably not the best idea, but i was pissed, and the car was bone-effing-stock at the time) and he told me that he had been instructed to look for anything non-factory looking and just issue a ticket for it and let the ref determine it. this was in riverside where i was issued the ticket.

SYNOPSIS: technically an aftermarket fmic that doesn't have a carb sticker will FAIL a ref inspection if the ref is going by the book. he may choose to look the other way if the car isn't otherwise heavily modified, but a state ref is probably going to fine-toothed comb that ish.

I've run my 1979 chevy stepside with a blown 350 with no exaust attached and didn't get pulled over...but of course it was just test run with the new motor...but thats not the point. heres the game plan....

follows for any ENGINE.

COPS LOOK AT TWO THINGS UNDER YOUR HOOD.
1. VIN NUMBERS
2. smog equipment

i got my hood popped on my s14 sr
ref ticket for modified SMOG
not because its a "sr20det"

!Zar!

Aftermarket intercoolers that don't have a carb sticker, isn't leagal in california. I know this for a fact. Stop talking out of your asses people.

The cop can write you up for a ref ticked because of such. And he did.

The state ref WON'T look the other way.

No shit. Cops always write out emission tickets which send you to the ref. Swapping a motor falls under the modified emissions also.

Now a days, cops look for more than that. You can get lucky if you have a stock looking sr, but some cops can still figure out what's up.

Driving is a privilege, not a right. Either you play by the rules or you don't play.

Now, if you know something is illegal and you get caught, you shouldn't complain. Most people have something illegal/out of code on their car. If cops enforced every single law on the books, the courts would be clogged.

In addition, illegal modifications are an infraction. So matter how bad it is, you won't lose your freedom. You may lose your car, but at least you get to go home.

eulalia
04-04-2008, 07:51 PM
honestly, we know its illegal to swap motors, and do modifications, we cant complain when you get pulled over, and have to go to the ref, just deal with it

and honestly, even though i am contradicting myself, because i do have a swap, the smog is really bad over here.. really bad

by the time i have kids there probably going to have to wear gas mask.. lol

its funny how we look at cops in a bad way because of the ref, but honestly, we need it, because its getting bad real fast down here

WOW ARE YOU SERIOUS?! :wtf: I'd heard cali was strict but wow... here in ga i'm not aware of any laws that limit car mods. I'm sure it has emissions laws and what not, but cops here don't really give a flying f*ck. I've seen people roll round with ic's showing, extra loud exhaust, washer lights, i've seen cars roll right past cops with no hood, and they cops juss kept goin. Though we do have that hella gay tint law, nothin below 35 Juss curious where would one go and find out the car laws of their city?

Sooo glad I dont live in Cali after hearing this, even though massachussetts is still strict with modifications they are nothing like cali. Like here if you have a modified exhaust they will pull you over but if it looks stock and isnt loud they wouldnt. And I have never had a cop look under my hood but if one did they probably wouldnt know what they are looking at. Unlike cali where it seems any slight mod will be picked out, and EVERYTHING has to be oem...wow. I have a huge front mount on my car, but when i have been pulled over for my muffler they dont even mention anything about any other mods i have.

cops should find something better to do in cali. like catching druggies and criminals.

isnt there job "to protect and promote the common good"?
i think they should worry less about illegal mods mor about meth labs. or maybe informing high school and middle school kids about STDS

last news thing i heard was 1 out of every 4 girls has an std. sounds lieka bigger problem then having a fmic

Cops here don't like to "Protect and Serve" because it doesn't make the county any money, However getting us for going 5mph over the speed limit and not having a front license plate will. And I can only guess it will get worse with the declining economy. Yay!!

If you don't like it, then move out.

There is no part in question.

It's written as, "Illegal emission modification". They check out the whole engine and emission system. They spend an hr or two going over the whole engine bay and then bust out ALLDATA in the process.

Then they smog it also.

most any Mods are illegal, if you dont have carb sticks your screwed, if you dont pass visual at ref your screwed even if you pass smog emissions with flying colors. You have anything shiny in your engine bay you can get sent to ref, my friend (BRAINFOOD) got sent to ref for his HID ballast BOX, i myself have been to ref, pay the 300+ dollars and its done.... for a little while.... for the record, I love CALI and i love where i live, you drive a modded car be prepared to deal with it... i wish i lived in the middle of nowhere so i could drive my s13 naked and with no exhaust and no one would care.... GL with ref. or dont even go and just pay the fine at the court once you see the judge.

CARB this and CARB that, does anyone have a pic of a CARB sticker? Are they different for different products or are they a universal standard? Do you think some of us (not in cali*) that dont really have ref tickets just put a few of CARB stickers on our "shiney'est" parts and explain to the cop that I bought all CARB legal products so i'm free and clear from any ref laws....

and if YES, then maybe we could look into duplicating or purchasing these carb stickers............

* And i said except cali because i'm assuming these CARB stickers have barcodes on them so that if you actually went to a ref inspection they would scan them and know their all phony, however cops here in texas would be like, "welp, carb sounds good just slow down boy and git on down the road ya hear!?"

Fmic's are illegal on cars that originally did not come from the factory like that. Even modding a factory car with a fmic with a bigger intercooler or aftermarket is illegal.

Fact is: Any modifications done to your engine/drivetrain/emissions is illegal.

and if YES, then maybe we could look into duplicating or purchasing these carb stickers............quote]

And imagine what kind of ticket you would get for having a fake carb sticker:loco: , they might just crush your car.

It's not illegal to have a fmic mounted per se, but it gives the popos the impression that you have something illegal under your hood. Now that your friend got a ref ticket he'll have to get it fixed or pay the fine.

What if you had locking hood pins, and you didnt have the key with you? What would/could he do to make you pop it? impound the vehicle? or worse?

A few of us usually spit the cost of a PO Box in Arizona and have all of our cars registered there. You can still have all the mail sent to a different address so it works out. As far as the cops seeing you more than once, fortunately I live in Palm Springs and just tell them im on vacation. Works well. the cost of the po box is 35 a month so split that between 3-5 guys and ur all good.

It might be illegal and it might not be illegal. Laws are written vague on purpose that they they can be interpreted in court. Have you ever got an excessive speed ticket for peeling out? Technically you weren't breaking the speed limit. You were just breaking traction. If anything, it was excessive acceleration. I don't know what to say. I try not to drive my 240sx at night, this helps. I still got pulled over for having aftermarket exhaust, in oklahoma where there is no emissions testing. But then again, I was pulled over in my M3 for 'looking like a drug dealer'. yea.... I've never touched a drug. I wish some laws were interpreted more directly and better written in the first place.
