View Full Version : DIY: Widebody S14

As most people know, I run 315's on 18x12's with 6.75" backspacing for race tires. They don't fit very well on the stock body, and barely fit with the poorly cut fenders on my old car. Doing the math, they're about 41mm further out than the wheels I run on the stock pulled fenders, so 50mm overfenders might've worked. There were just some issues with the 50mm overfenders available, such as fitment, actual tire clearance, etc. Because of that and a case generic boredom, my friend Carl (cdigity) convinced me to make my own fender flares.

It started with the normal cutting, slicing, welding:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3290005.jpg

Yeah my prep work sucked. The kid who had the car before me had bondo'ed the shit out of it, so I did the bare minimal for getting some spot welds on there.
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3290011.jpg

Next was tire fitment. I needed to actually figure out where to put the fender, so to make things easy, I planned on retaining the stock arch to create the lip for the flare. From there I'd just have to stretch fiberglass from the body to the lip to make the flare:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3300017.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3300018.jpg

It was decided that it'd look like crap leaving it as it was, and I'd have to cut it down to round it or build up to match the bodyline... to do that I'd need something to fill it:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3290007.jpg

That kind of worked, but was more of a "will this even look remotely OK" type of test. For the real deal, I'd need something shapeable. Foam blocks to the rescue!
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3300024.jpg

Shaping this stuff is easy and fast. In no time (and with a little help from my girlfriend) we had some shape to it:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3300030.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3300025.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3300037.jpg

After that, stretch cloth over it and add resin:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6719.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6721.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6726.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6723.jpg

It's still rough, and needs to fully harden before we pull it off, resin the other side, trim it, and smooth it out (starting with 40grit). A skim of filler, and it'll probably be the smoothest part of the body. I'm tempted to make a mold out of it and do a CF copy..... for now, I'll see how this finishes up.

very nice... i wish i had enough time to do myown widebody but i didnt so i went the origin lab route. I like how it looks subtle but its not at all... the only thing the bothers me is the abropt end of the flare on the rear section as it transitions back into the orig quarter panel... jus a thought

great job!

Dude I had last year beat at about this stage:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/P3290001.jpg

Of course, last year I had about 3 hours total to get my wheels to fit before leaving for GA. This year I took the G35c to GA (ended up 4th in a pack of Shelby/Mustang GT's) and actually have time to finish stuff up on the car.

This year should be overall better than last year. Some other stuff on (and going on) the car new for the year:
- Double adjustable rear shocks and tender springs (well, supposedly shipping out soon)
- Fully heimed suspension (LCAs coming shortly, rear spindle heims being worked on)
- Ditched Greddy Emanage Ultimate for AEM EMS (it boggles the mind why I put up with the EMU for so long)
- Ditched NPR intercooler for a thicker/ shorter Ebay POS that probably flows better
- All aluminum intake piping (yay no mild steel)
- New AN lines and aluminum oil/ vacuum manifolds
- Braided wire loom
- Eventually ditching Kumhos for Hoosiers, which are supposedly faster, and have better contingency prizes.
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/CrunchTime/DSC_6697.jpg

And of course: a real widebody. :P

His and mine are both KA-T.

There used to be a couple other KA-T's but one was sold a year ago. Another KA-T S14 should join the fray soon, though.

Where is the gas door?

Good question. I was originally planning on doing a cutout and using more foam blocks to shape it to the stock door size. I might just stick a universal billet aluminum door on there, though. Carl is trying to get me to reroute the filler neck to the trunk, but I'm sketchy on it as I actually use the trunk while on the road for distant races.

There should be enough room to tuck the tire underneath when the suspension deflects. I made sure of that, as that was one of the reasons I didn't think the off-the-shelf overfenders would work.

I've heard good thiings about The Shop in southwestern, CT. Other than that there's Bishop Motorsports in Canton, CT. Kyle Bishop there is EFI 101/Advanced certified, IIRC. For the most part, I do my own tuning.

It's tough to say, but IMO the car is more manageable with the wider rear track, as well as more meat for throttle steer (which is pretty much how I slalom).

AceInHole
04-01-2008, 12:45 PM
The foam is from Jo-Ann fabrics. It's the crap they use to do flower arrangements. It's stiff enough to make a mold out of, but you can literally shape it with your hand (sand-paper and cheezegrater does wonders on it).

bigOdom1

cloth is just a roll of fleece like at most hobby stores/walmart have hobby shops should have the foam and the fleece and the resin maybe too

racepar1
04-02-2008, 12:26 AM
You should REALLY take a mold off of it in case the ones on the car get damaged. Then they are easily repalceable. Carbon is cool and all, but fiberglass will work and you can do it yourself pretty easily. Looks REALLY sweet man!

I've been debating colors, and as much as I'd like to go back to black (my first two 240s were black), I think I'll have to do white again.

As always, well done.

Sorry, no decent pictures of the car before other than random shots of things being worked on.

Anyways, progress pics. Started sanding down the passenger side, pulled the panel off, resined the inside, and taped it back up so it'd retain its shape while curing:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0009.jpg

It's also trimmed a bit more. You can see the lip of the overhang:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0015.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0016.jpg

I'll have the option to do hidden rivets, but panel-bond should work just fine. I decided to retain most of the sheet metal for rigidity, so I'll have to go back and actually weld it all in. It'll give me something close to the arch to bond to. It'll also keep the tire clearance consistent by keeping flex to a minimum:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0013.jpg

Other than that, started up the panel for the other side:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0022.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0020.jpg

And did some quality checks to make sure everything is even:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0010.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/FILE0027.jpg

I'll probably have to finish one side off completely, and define where I want solid lines/ curves. After that I'll make a bunch of templates to act as a guide for sanding/ body-filling the other side. It'll also give me something to use for repairs, or if I go through with making a mold to do copies. There's a place that does professional body molds for baja trucks and such near me, so I'll see if I can get a quote from them.

Another big thanks to cdigity at SoundWorksInc for letting me take up a bay :) This would definitely not be happening without his help (it's like a giant speaker box, right?).

A lot of people have asked about the fuel filler door, and I was actually undecided between a few methods. In the end we ended up winging it and came up with this:

I cut out a small hole over the gas tank cap. From there I was able to peek inside and get an idea of where to make more cuts, and as the hole was enlarged it became much easier to trim it to an exact size.
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6733.jpg

After that, cloth was glued around the edge of the hole. We put the fender back on, and screwed the OEM cover back in, pulling the cloth to shape:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6738.jpg

Add resin:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6753.jpg

Let it dry and trim the excess (after removing the cover, being sure it opens!):
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6763.jpg

Replace the cover to double-check fitment:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6769.jpg

Triple-check usefulness:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6774.jpg

(Same can from the front):
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6775.jpg

And for good measure:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6750.jpg

3" is roughly 75mm, so depending on where you're measuring from, these would be roughly 75mm overfenders.

ATM, it's all done by eyeballing and basic measurements. I still have to make a template to see if I'll need more filler or more sanding for the other side. Like most people who've seen it in person have said: "It's not like you can see both sides at the same time anyways." :P

That said, they should be pretty equal when it's all done. In retrospect, I should've shaved the foam blocks, then taken them off and laid them side by side to compare them.

More progress:

The driver's side with a 40-grit pass:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6783.jpg

Thin coat of filler/ resin mix and 80-grit sanding on the passenger side:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6795.jpg

After doing the same for the driver's side, it's all hand sanding. Hopefully painting early next week.

I'm planning on hand sanding the bodyline in with a sanding block. The DA kind of shaped it out, but it shouldn't be hard to redo. It'll blend out where the fender starts buldging, and blend back in in the rear.

The driver's side fender can still be sanded down a lot more. I'll have to get it to match the angle and height of the pass. side, as it looks a bit cockeyed.

And some tire clearance testing:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n247/AceInHole/PirateS14/touchmybody/DSC_6797.jpg

All that's left now is some trimming, panel bond the fenders, fill the lines to blend them in, and paint.

It looks like a Supra rear end to me for some reason.

Haha.

I just said that to myself, and then scrolled down and was like,

"Haha, this guy is good."

Screw it. Dyno and align have to be done before event 1, and there's still a dozen more small things to do to prep the car for sealer primer. I bought $450 worth of sealer primer, base paint (300K - Nissan Super White), and clear coat. Fuck if I'm going to waste it on a shoddily prepped car.

For event 1, the car will rattle-canned:

Looks great man. I agree, pulling a mold off of it is a really good idea. If you were closer I could help you out with that and maybe make some carbon fiber panels.

WoooW!! that shit looks ILLL!!!! cant believe its FOAM!

The fenders aren't made of foam. The foam was just used for the forming process and was taken out once the epoxy hardened.

As for the molds, I still have to finish the fenders (they need some surface work and a bit more evening). After that I'll get a quote for what it'd cost to pull professional body molds off, and see about making CF ones. I'm gonna need to make copies eventually since I'm expecting to build a new car towards the end of the year.

Once again, thanks for the comments! And a special thanks to cdigity at SoundWorksInc for letting me use up a bay for an entire week :)

god damn! that's pretty impressive handiwork. it definitely resembles a supra rear end, and that's not a bad thing.

A coming out shot:

And the day shot:

Rear end needs some work still, which will be done before real paint. Snagged a leftover center section to see how it'd look with a black inside:

Really nice. I like how the flares are rounded most of the others have more of a boxy look.

I used to work at a boat shop. I used to help with the mold repair and fabrication. Molds can cost a pretty penny, it all depends on the rout you go. Either hand laid or Injection Molded.

Injection you will get the same part out each time and you will only have to trim the edges and you wont get air voids.

With a hand laid part you don't get that perfection each time. you also run the risk of getting air voids.

If I could buy other wheels for the street, I would. I want CCW's for my front race wheels first, though :P

+rep. looks pretty good. did you make a reverse mold of the quarters? the reason i ask is if you were to damage one you would have a mold to make a replacement. the only thing i would have done different is eliminate the fuel door hole. either placing the filler tube in the trunk or make the fuel door dontour the opening on the quarter. i just dont like the sunken in look.

AceInHole

Routing the fuel filler to the trunk looked to be a huge pain in the ass. It'll be easier to make a countoured fuel door later on.

sounds good to me.. i cant wait to see that. seems like everyone just leaves the door sunken in.

rattle can flat black ftw!
yeah the rear end is very supra-ish, I dont really love it with its bubble-butt look although seeing it on those super wide CCWs makes it so very awesomer.

It reminds me of a MKIV Supra.
Still badass, though. No way I'd have the patience for that.
