Well, Tyrone and I finally got our steering wheels put on. He had an r33 skyline wheel and I had a 180sx TypeX wheel also used on the newer r33's and s14's. Installation was not too difficult, but not exactly a plug and play affair.

You need to have a safety starkey, avaliable at usually any local parts store (or else dont even think about taking the airbag off, its almost impossible)

You have to use the original airbag harness (and rotating contact) on the 240sx and take the little computer module out of the JDM steering wheels.

I was going to use the 180sx rotating contact (so the horns/airbags work). but the harnesses were different, and the ribbon cable inside broke. so I modified a 1995 240sx rotating contact to fit. your stock one might fit the 180sx steering wheel with some modifications. I'll explain this later, as install is technically not complete yet.

Nismo270r got the cruise control to work by attaching the switch on the bottom of the wheel, but Tyrone and I decided not to (looks tacky and we never use it).

I'd like to thank Omar (Kid Zelda) for getting me my wheel. I have been looking for one for a while and he was able to get one for me <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> I like this wheel much better. the steering wheel grip is a bit wider and the steering wheel is nicely wrapped in leather. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':look:'>

Anyways here's some pictures of my wheel, and one pic of Tyrone's.

this is just a reference, just to let you guys know its not exactly plug and play. Tyrone's r33 wheel looks like a maxima or frontier steering wheel to me. i like mine because it was used on s14 in europe and (later model r33 , which doesnt matter to me). I think s15 wheel would look a lil awkward on my car, but nonetheless its a very nice wheel.

edit: dont want to mislead anybody by saying i have GTR wheel!. &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sigh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

It is exactly the same as the 97 98 maxima steering wheel. And just to let you know that it is the R33 GTS steering wheel not the GTR.

Its not really a big deal to me if my wheel is same as gtr or not, but thanks for the clarification. However if you were referring to the last pic, (that is a GTS wheel).

Your statement that it my steering wheel is the EXACT same as a maxima's steering is incorrect. I've done my reasearch. Chris (nismo270r) can confirm this fact.

The wheel I have is similar to 1997-1998 maximas, but NOT exactly the same. To prove my point, here is a visual comparison

These were taken from a 1997 maxima

vs mine:

you see the difference now Jupiter? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':look:'>

might not be much difference, but the fact is there is, and it is obvious, therefore they are not the exact same wheel. However you do bring up another good alternative to the 240sx wheel, maxima steering wheel is nice too, and you can probably retain your cruise control (and have it look clean).

oohh, looky here:
http://www.rapidcars.com/images/mymaxint.jpg
here's the steering wheel of another maxima (GLE i think), which has a even more distinctive different than the 180sx wheel.

the overall diameter of the steering wheels seemed the same when we lined them up.

Hey Grant, how long did it take you to do the swap?

is it something that anyone can do?

I like your steering wheel and wouldn't mind having it in my car......how did you get it anyway?

edit:one more question....so are the R32 seats any better?

As I mentioned in the first post, the install is not hard, but not a plug n play affair, and as I mentioned I got the steering wheel from Omar (Kid Zelda).

To install the wheel took me about 3 hours, but thats figuring stuff out too. It should take less than one hour with the right tools and instructions

The r32 seats are nice, but a bit small for my tastes. I'm a big guy (aka fat bastard), so the side boltsters aren't very comfortable, but nice seats nonetheless

Hey 2NR,

GT-R seats are nice for smaller people...
rear outside bolt doesn't line up. Have to cut and weld the rail or make another hole in the floorboard. Former is better than latter, car doesn't need anymore holes.

Anyone, like my S15 floormats and shiftknob? ;-)

Hey Grant, is there anyway you can do a write-up or FAQ how to swap a steering wheel?
