View Full Version : Lightest aftermarket hoods for the S14?

I've been trying to find postings or listings of the weights on different manufacturer's aftermarket hoods for the S14, but no luck. Are there any carbon or fiberglass hoods available that will drop at least 25lbs of weight when compared to the oem hood? I tried emailing Kognition Designs regarding their dry carbon hood, but they no longer market it. I figured this would have been my best best to drop some weight off the front end, but now I have to look for alternatives.
Thanks.

Huh? Dont think anybody markets dry carbon hoods in the states. Then again, most companies in the states only market frp skeleton hoods with carbon fiber overlays. There isnt really any "real" full carbon fiber hoods in the states...

Kognition won't make you one???? I don't see why not they have the molds. Bug them! You'll have to pay out the ass for it, but DAMN is it light.

I talked to Mike @ Kognition a couple times about the hood and sunroof plug, but he just said they didn't manufacture them anymore. :(

If you want extreme light weight, single layer carbon or frp.
Or be cheap and buy a carbon/frp hood and take all the structural supports away. But make sure you have hood pins.
I would only suggest that for track though.

^^^EXACTLY!!! He HAS the molds sitting around for sure so why not make one if the guy is willing to pay out the ass. He is NOT going to even offer that product to people who are shopping around. I really doubt he ever did offer it to shoppers in the first place.
Aftermarket hoods are poo, sleek oem deathmetal is best.
Sure stick with the stock one if you like a 50+lb hunk of metal sitting in one of the worst places for extra weight to sit in the chasis.

The lightest hood is the one I have. This exact one in the picture: http://www.aerokits.net/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_234&products_id=3407
It's much much lighter than the VIS OEM style carbon fibre hood I have now. The reason I didn't like it was because of the vents.
For race only, the crappy aero hood would be lightest. I can pick it up with one hand.

Man...I dunno about those vents. I was hoping to keep it oem-style. How light are we talking here?

For comparison, I need somebody to help me with my OEM style VIS hood. On the aero hood, I can pick it up with one hand and walk around the block no sweat.
I don't have exact numbers but I'm guessing it's a good 20 pounds lighter.

Well how much would you say the VIS hood weighed? 35lbs? How is the fitment on the fiberglass hood?

Contact Axis Power Racing. http://www.axispowerracing.com/ Unfortunately it appears the website is down for maintenance right now.
They(or should I say he, since John Kamler personally hand makes every part) will do pretty much anything in CF if you've got the cash. And everything he makes is vacuum-bagged dry carbon. If the part needs structural support, like a door for instance, he uses kevlar honeycomb. Very light shit. For example the doors he makes for first-gen Miatas weigh 19 pounds, while the hoods weigh like 6-8, fenders are around 2 pounds.
Try and contact the guy and find out his rates for custom work. He claims to have the most reasonable custom-composite-work rates around. I haven't looked into that to verify it though.
Seeing as the fenders are so light since they seem to require no structural properties(not a lot of aerodynamic load, like a hood has), you might wanna ask him about replacement fenders too. You could probably save like 15+ pounds per fender. Also, carbon-kevlar doors would probably save a good 30 per side
Cheers!

Unfortunately I don't have an Email for him in my contacts. What you can try doing though is contacting the engine building side of Axis Power Racing and ask them if they have a contact for him. http://www.axispowerracing.net/motor235.html
I'm 90% positive that they're affiliated, so they should be able to help you.

Well the hard part is finding an M-Sports distributor over here that would have the hood in stock. Or be able to get one in 2-3 weeks.

HA! Neitherone instock or a hood in 3 weeks is an option for the Msport hood anymore. I got lucky I got my cF msport instock and local. The only other one they had was for their demo car. Renovaauto.com
i don't believe they are around anymore tho. I got quite the steal of the century for that hood too even tho it was still expensive.
and yes that hood was retarded light. I can't give you exact numbers tho but TRUST!\
