View Full Version : Why I respect the KA (pics)

I was driving down the road when I heard a subtle knocking noise and noticed the oil light started to come on while I was sitting at a red light. I knew what was about to happen so I just let all of my pissed off emotions go and just kept on casually driving. It finally turned into a loud rod knock and I lost almost all engine power a mile later so I pulled off into a parking lot.

I waited till about 12am and tried to drive it back. It was going good until I had to drive up a mild incline, that's when this happened.

I ended up getting it towed to the house but this is the thing, I drove it from where the tow truck dropped it off to the garage for teardown.

Not to bad for 3 cylinders and a gapping hole.

There was a video on youtube a while back of a similar thing. Some kids just sat there revving the poor KA to redline until the inevitable, and they threw a rod through the block. The car sounded like ass, but they ended up driving like 10 miles before it seized up and wouldn't start again. Pretty insane when you just had the motor spill blood and guts all over the street!

also the one on the hwy when he spun a bearing and could only run 30 but was doing like 60 till it spit out the side of the block

My god...poor, poor KA. But that certainly does speak well for a good design :) Glad to see you got home safely...sucks that you need a new block though. :( GL with everything,.....
.... and at the KA's funeral make sure to tell it how strong it was in the end.

Im just curious to what lead up to the spun bearing, when you or if you tear it down be sure tp post any clues to what may have starved the oil pump.

Yeah this is my first piston engine that I have "blown up" although I have went through a couple 13B RX-7 motors but they don't really give way like a piston engine does.

This is my daily so it was sad to see it go but oh well, KAs are a dime a dozen and I'm already replacing it with another one.

One of the guys in Augusta used to go to Cali alot for Tattoo conventions and thats where he met the owner of 1st Amend , I honestly didn't know they had the ones in California until the Tattoo convention here in Augusta when the owner from Cali showed up.

I know the Augusta guys are great at what they do and they are pretty cool outside of work as well. Duno about the other locations.

So you respect KA's because it ran after you were dumb and it didn't have oil?

Ugh.

Ok.

slidingsky
03-26-2008, 02:32 PM
Wrong.

It had oil, I duno why it started to fail but it did. As I said this was my only car that I drive all the time which had 150k miles on it. I haven't done anything that would jeopardize the engine to fail since I bought the car in June.

03-26-2008, 02:37 PM
Yeah, I don't think KA's were built to handle 9,250rpm (avatar). :keke:

Probably why she blasted a rod.

It should just buff right out from what I see...

slidingsky
03-26-2008, 02:43 PM
:) Yeah that's the same Avatar I've used since having an RX-7 over 2 years ago.

My old Toyota paseo did that to me wayyyyyyy back in the day. It shut off after it spit the rod out the block. Then I started it again ftw! and drove home 2 miles on 3 cylinders lol. Oiled down my drive way tho but who cared I was pissed.

iron has no give, so it cracks. I find that aluminum blocks are better for FI. Although, the LS series blocks are pretty quality.

Well props to everyone that has went through my pain. I really wasn't mad at the motor, mainly I was pissed about having to swap a motor.

My friend and I were talking and it seems that it's almost always the #3 piston and its parts that let go. Kind of weird.

racepar1
03-27-2008, 01:59 AM
Every engine has that one cylinder that always seems to go. I think on out atlantic motors it was #3 too.

Tearlessj
03-27-2008, 02:00 AM
Yea number 3 is the most common to go, Funny cause when I bought my hatch, it was knocking BAD, instead of towing it to my back yard, i drove it......and did some doughnuts. lol I didn't realize it was blown until I was walking back to the house and stepped on a rod. lol

man i dread that as well but mine only has 1,500 miles on it lol....hey man i got a short block if u need it ..might want new rings but hey all the rods are connected and no gaping holes in the block...150 and u can have it or 230 with new rings and bearings

...
.... and at the KA's funeral make sure to tell it how strong it was in the end.

My Ka's funeral consisted of me dropping the block and crank in the trash can. I lol'd while laying in bed hearing the truck struggle to get the trash can up, then...BAM! BAM! I hear the block and crank hit the bottom of the truck's trash container.

04-17-2008, 03:37 PM
I was driving in North Carolina and I hit the rev limiter by accident downshifting from fourth to third and the car was fine for like 50 miles. No oil light or anything. Then all of a sudden the block start making noises and the piston flew out the side by my window. Then the rod was sitting on top of the passenger side control arm stuck. It was crazy.
