this happened in san diego, and my friends, tommy and steve, were called to an interview for the news coverage of the civic "drifting" accident that happened early one morning here... dunno if you guys heard about it but heres the video of the news coverage below below... all the guys here is san diego, have been trying tog et another local event going since Qualcomm stadium's "drift circuit" got closed down due to a crash.... now all there is, is the drag racing.. so heres us, pleading for help of a track opening.. haha.. we have to drive way up north all the time to get anything done... idk if this should be in regional or not, just wanted to post another accident and good/bad note to drifting. reporting live from s13lep. :wavey:

They aren't they were the only locals that could show up for the interview on short term notice.

Well, for those who got a chance to see the interview, it was edited quite a bit. I showed up to try and represent the local drifting community here and make it clear that we simply need local events to start happening here. I had a 20 min. interview with them and every question they would ask me I would just keep explaining how we have tried to contact every spot you can think of to get people that would like to try drifting a shot as apossed to doing it on the street. we agreed that drifting is the fastest growing motorsport and there NEEDS to be more areas to do this at legally. I did think it was funny that I told her I have only been drifting for a year and they labeled me " professional drifter" .LOL. I did what I could and sorry I'm not the "older" drift model you seem to be looking for Tommy! I think your missing the point that we had a possitive response back to the public about the sport.

they're not, they're local sd guys that sprung into action when the rest of us were busy to get an interview with fox news. They messed up on a lot of stuff during that segment like "the illegal motorsport drifting". All I know is that if some how this gets events back in sd I'll be one happy camper.

well.... it was a civic that was drifting so that would attract more attention to civic owners than 240 owners.. but yea, the more crashed honda's might translate into new 240 owners so. anyway, looks like that guy in the civic failed at his attempt.

this pisses me off the news are idiots u cant drift fwd they need to correct themselves and stop giving drifting a bad name... the guy was driving recklessly they shouldn't blame a motor sport for someone driving recklessly and not even drifting.

Yeah I don't agree when they lump all the bad apples with the good apples
Just cause some irresponsible person street races doesn't mean that everyone who drives a similar modified car will do the same
I agree there should be more drifting venues though, but it doesn't look very good for Socal
We're slowly losing more tracks and venues
Hopefully since the economy is in the tubes, it might force some possible venues to open their doors for drift events in order to generate more revenue
But unfortunately, regardless of how many sanctioned events you have, you'll still have the irresponsible people who street race and cause possible harm to themselves and others on the road

I do somewhat agree its like pulling of somebody for speed on the interstate and blaming it on nascar. (but you have to be going around a left hand turn to do that though huh) j/k

It's great that they called this a "drifting-related crash" and put all of the emphasis on this growing motorsport, but right at the end of the report they snuck in that "the driver may have been drunk"...
Well, do you think that maybe ALCOHOL had a little more to do with the crash than some FWD car attempting to drift?!
Gotta love the media... they'll spin things whichever way it takes to follow their agenda. Total BS.

03-25-2008, 02:28 PM
yea, "the guy driving the civic was possibly drunk". I like how they throw that in at the end. Blame drifting, but not a bad drunk driver. Seems like drifting just got the scapegoat on that one.
I do not watch the news anymore because it does have spin on every story and who knows that if the story is actually factual. There is no investigating, the media just takes one idea and runs with it. I am disgusted at the propaganda that the news outlets use.

There's a bbq held by sddrift in about 2 weeks in san diego and the reporter from fox6 is coming along probably to get statements about drifting and the 240sx community. Hopefully the message about drifting will pose a more postive outlook in contrast to the negative message the media mixes up with drunk driving. I'm skipping work to go have some fun with sd heads.

yeah the bbq hopefully will be good.. cause we need to expose the reality of the drifting sport, and educate them so everyone hopefully will finally know!!! and yes, we REALLY need tracks out here... haha... and the ghey thing is, the only "legit" place that really has room is qualcomm, and that got ruined a while back when someone crashed there at the drift circuit... so idk whats gonna happen but maybe now finally the city can get involved in helping us out.
ps- mods-- sorry for putting it in the wrong spot... it involves drifting so i figured maybe it would be 'on topic chat'... thanks.

true... but, just speaking from experience... i used to street drift like crazy, all the time, for the first year i had my car... i mean, alllllllooooooooooot! then, i do my first track event finally, and i didnt event mess around on the streets for like 3 months... it was no fun anymore.. it got dumb.. too much to worry about.. thats just me tho... so if we have track events periodically, people will be more about gettin their shit ready for the track you know? idk just my thots... thats how it works for me anyway. any one else feel this way?

here in saint louis, once a month they have "midnight madness" at Gateway International Raceway. it used to just be drag racing (from 8pm-2am) but for the past few years they've added a drift course. it's 20 bucks and goes all night. it's not expensive, this should be done everywhere.

I totally disagree with the interviewees implicating blame on Qualcomm stadium for this act of idiocy. So what if you have to drive a bit furthers to LA for drift events?! I drive all the time for hours out from LA to do autoX and hpde's all the time. There are very few track venues outside most densly populated urban areas anyways. At least with SD, you get a lot of AutoX events. Inside LA, there's really nothing either (that I know of anyhow).
If the kids going to be foolish enough to drift his civic, chances are he's not going to bother with the hassle of going to learn and pay for a proper event. Blame the kid for his own actions.
Also, how did they determine that the civic was drifting anyhow, and not just spun out of control doing something else? There's really not enough info there to justify that this was caused by drifting. Seems more plausible they had throw in drifting in the picture for added publicity.

Yeah your right people would never think to do it on their own without publicized track events forcing them into needing to drink and drift illegally.
Who can't go to the track? though? People who can't even drive? 18 years old with insurance you should able to go to a track day.
Everything should be un-sanctioned and illegal?

thats ur opinion, but they/we arnt blaming it on qualcomm... for one, we all know for a fact the civic wasnt drifting.... two, not everyone wants to drive 2-4 hrs away for events... its nice to have something local.. its expensive to drive far... almost just as expensive as the entree fee for the event... so it comes to be $200-300, maybe $400 by the time the days done... with tires, gas, hauling it there, maybe renting a trailer, food, condoms, etc... anyway, this is off the point... the point is, below LA, theres NOTHING down here!!! and if they want us/we/people/idiots, to stop fuckin around on the streets, we all need LOCAL events everywhere... its really not that much to ask for... and they could potentially make money off it... since theyre so money hungry, the word money should entise them to do it right away... but they dont give a shit about the q cause its privately owned and they have no benefit from it directly im assuming... and btw, were not talking about autox, were talking about drifting... theres drag racing, and autox here, but no drifting? why not have all 3 here? then about everything that kids/adults do with cars, is basically covered... it only MAKES COMMON SENSE to get a drift course here! end of story.

Er... most locals now drive to Willow Springs and that's clearly beyond LA. On average it takes me 2 hours and 30 minutes driving (and speeding) with my 240sx and about 3+ hours towing my car up there (@ legal speed limit w/ a trailer) and that's just from North County San Diego. It could easily be an hour more added to the trip if you drive from somewhere like Chula Vista in the south near the border. The commute alone racks up the gas bill. Even if we have the budget to do it, we would still want to save a bit, no?
Sure, there's El Toro with Drift Day in Irvine, but the point is that we need a local venue for drifting. If we had our venue back, more local people would attempt to hit up the track since it's closer plus it'd give more opportunities to track your car aside from just the events that take place further north.
I understand the argument that street drifting might not fully go away with a local track, but it will help cut down the amount of people doing it. People will soon realize that it's better off saving up for a track day and going balls out without worries than worrying about being cited for reckless driving.
I hate making the trip, but in the end it's worth it. But if there's a slight chance we could get our venue back, I would support it 100% because I can't justify making a drive 3 hour trip to the track when I can make a 20 minute trip down south to Qualcomm in San Diego.
If we have to be a bit dramatic to get the venue back, I say go for it. "People will die and this is just the beginning." :keke:
*EDIT: LOL two people beat me to it.. I guess I was typing for a while.*
On another note, I might skip out on the HKS performance festival to show my support at the SDdrift BBQ.

of course it would be nice to have a track right at your back yard, but that's not going to be the case for most ppl. Irvine is what, 1-1&1/2 hrs away from SD? That's really not too bad at all. There's really nothing out here in LA either. Yeah it is kinda inconvenient that one has to pay for gas, lodging, etc but that should be expected given the hobby.
Not saying I disagree that having a track very close by would discourage some kids from fooling around (others will prob choose to do so regardless of the circumstances). I think it certainly would be a safer oulet for some, but you simply cannot make everyone happy, and have tracks 30 mins away from everyone like you a fast food chain.
if qualcomm is privately owned as you say, then there's really little even the government or anyone else can do about it. But hey, at least I give them some credit for supporting some motor sports. You don't hear that from most other stadiums. You can't expect them to give in to every form of recreation, b/c the media makes a fuss about something every time.
That's if you even believe the accident in question even had anything to do with drifting to begin with. Regardless, I still feel that the kid in question is at fault here. To say you don't like qualcomm b/c they don't cater towards your hobby is one thing, and thats reasonable. To say, they are to blame for this incident and all future accidents related to drifting, I just dont find that convincing.

We definately need a track in SD. It's not just SD heads we got friends in Tijuana/Ensenada that drift and I'm pretty sure they would roll up here since we're neighbor's and all. Yes Irvine is close, but alot of us aren't stock so you know we aren't 5-0 friendly. Driving long distances increase our chances of getting busted. Even if we aren't f**king around on the way it's just more risky. We have BS 1/8 mile drag racing, and the small AutoX event we have is hosted by the BMW club (For BMW's and like 5 or 6 other cars) and they boot you out if you "Accidently drift". We need a drift track so bad that it's not even funny. Also the BBQ is gonna be good. Last year we had a good amount of peeps come out but this year will be bigger.

Saying drifting is an illegal motorsport is the most ignorant bullshit.
What about the "motorsport" is illegal????
Street drifting is illegal, motorsports are legal.

sddrift tends to do that. we have less rules.
i wouldn't worry to much about being pulled over because of this, he was driving a civic. that attempted to drift. so maybe civics will start getting pulled over and accused of attempting to be drifters?
maybe were in the clear lol.
high hopes for a possible event locally because of this
