hey guys!

and what kind of oil should i use in a 97 with 150k on the clock?
i've gotten mixed reviews thats why i'm asking....
thanks in advance :wiggle:

this has been covered to death.
basic rules to follow:
• unless its new/been rebuilt/already runs synthetic - dont use it.
• 10W30 is a basic overall weight, and in your case would be fine (150k is enough miles, but nothing too drastic just yet) If you're experiencing valve tap, etc. you may want to switch to a heavier wight (ie. 10W40) which may help you out also in those higher temps you socal guys see.
• get the best oil you can afford. Whats the best you say? ..that all comes down to personal opinion. A billion guys will stand up for one brand, while a billion others are trying to push it down. So its all what YOU think is best.
Personally, I run royal purple 10W30 in my car. no complaints.

I can't find the original article I found on oil, but here's where I reposted it. Definitely a good read about oil, type, and how it works best for your particular car. http://race850.com/boards/showthread.php?t=475

dynasour blood lol.... yeah i rolled with royal purple for a bit too 20 50 i think no complaints. right now im using the oil from my work, 5 30 from like 76 i believe, its free so i dont complain, i could change the oil once a day if wanted. its all preference for example ive heard alot of bad and good things about mobil 1, i didnt have a good first impression considering i blew up my sr within hours after changing oil(mobil1) i am not saying thats why it blew up but it gave me the gitters lol. do your research and see what you like best.

i searched already and all i found was mixed reviews, people arguing about which type to use.
i think last time i used penzoil 20w-50, should i go with the same?
oh and one more question, should i use synthetic or conventional?

i already answered the synthetic question. oil is all about personal preference. theres no right or wrong answer. its what YOU THINK is best for your car (as far as brand goes.) if you like what you've been running, and you havent had any problems with it, then by all means...do what you want.
this isnt something you should be asking for opinions about. its pointless, its like asking what engine is better. its a stupid question that has no "right/wrong" answer.

what if you have no idea if your SR engine ran synthetic or regular dinosaur oil? Can you just put the organic non synthetic oil and run it for a day than drain it again? Or do you have to gradually switch over?

PM'ed you to avoid arguments about statements I make. I dont want to turn this thread into every other oil thread.

The whole thing about synthetics... is bullshit. There is no proof that you shouldn't switch from conventional to synthetic; its just a myth.

so i read the articles, but still what do you do if you have no idea if you have no idea synthetic or regular oil in your engine? i want to run regular but worried there might be synthetic in there.. can i just flush it out with regular oil by running it for a few minutes than draining it?

Yes it's negligible. They dissolve in each other, so after a few oil changes, it doesn't matter.

The only way to know exactly what is going on in your engine with the oil you use is to send in a sample in to be analyzed. Blackstone labs is a good place to start.

I use Royal Purple 10w30 with a 165k miles on the motor. Moving to 10w40 see if it fixes some of the rattling/noises.

Yeah good stuff. I got my friend to use the Valvoline DurBlend stuff. It works really well. He has over 200k miles on his motor too.

sorry, I'll never trust "Bob". I still say that lucas thing he did is a load of B.S. ...But that's a whoooole different thread. Not trying to jack this thread but... I used lucas in my friend's S2k w/160k miles on it and it basically did that the test did. After the first 50 miles and the car going through stop and go stuff it starting wanting to died out when it was at a idle. When I check and looked at his oil it was bubbling! Changed out the oil and everything was fine after.
My other friend loves lucas and never had a problem with it. But both the car he used it is at +200k miles on them. One was a Integra B18 LS and the other was S13 KA and he ran the shit out of them.
My believe is if your motor is clean and running fine don't use lucas. If your motor is having some lil problems with it run it but if it starts acting weird change it right out.
Mods: I'll start a new thread if this goes on. Sorry.

So I got to change over to synthetic today; it was about time to change the oil anyway. My friend and I did it a little more thoroughly than how it usually goes though. The steps chosen are as follows:
1. Drain the dirty oil.
2. Replace the drain bolt and refill with Castrol Syntec Blend 10W-30. (I had this stuff sitting in the trunk of my car for a while.)
3. Run the car with the new blend oil until ideal temperature.
4. Drain the oil again.
5. Replace the oil filter. (I used a Wix filter, if anyone was wondering.)
6. Refill with Amsoil XL 10W-30 full synthetic oil.
7. Put the oil cap back on, run the car until oil temperature is ideal, then check the level of oil via dipstick.
Through both the oil steps, we used exactly 4 quarts for each refill. That seems to do the trick.
I've heard good things about Amsoil, so I'm giving it a whirl. :bigok:

Switching to synthetic is as easy as draining old conventional oil, replace filter and pour synthetic in.

I have also heard great things about AMSOIL

I use castrol syntec..
well, USED to use it.
Runs fine.. no problems..
I don't know what to use on the S2000.. probably also castrol syntec with honda oem filters..
btw.. dont be surprised if you spring leaks after switching to synthetic on a 180k motor.

Yeah I just thought going synthetic progressively was a good idea. If the rumors are true, then I would think running blend first and then full synthetic would be a more logical route. And plus, I had the blends sitting in the back rotting lol
