I really want to buy a '91 to '94 240sx and then drop in a SR20DET, but if I can't pass smog, then it's going to be a no-go. Anyone with experience in passing smog in California?

Is it the visual or the sniffer that won't pass? Or is it both?? I may be able to get away with the visual, but definately not the sniffer. Thanks for the reply BTW.

umm, wont pass in CA at all. if you find a hookup, then yur good, but that is getting harder and harder everyday. lot of smog guys that do it have got busted.

I'd just turbo the KA 24 motor. i've done it and it runs nice. ive rode in a s13 coupe with stock redtop sr20det at 10psi. im running 7psi on my KA with t3/to4B. mine is faster than his( yes, big noticable difference) . OUR CARS are made to drift. his SUX GET N-Sport Kit. good luck

i would say the sniffer wont pass, due to the turbo.

i don't mean a turbo wont pass, but the sr's wont.
i think the wrx needed three cats or somethin' to pass emissions stateside.

i wonder how people that import Silvia's get their car REgistered??? Same with the Skylines!

The sniffer will pass if the engine is in good health and the swap is performed correctly.

The WRX uses 3 cats to cure cold start emissions (not tested). It's also a 2002 model, hence held to much much tighter standards. Think about it - there's no fundamental difference between the SR20DET and the 4G63 or 3S-GTE (both of which were sold in the US in '91-'94). By the way, a brand new Audi TT (1.8L turbo, 225hp) only has one cat... It's all in the design...

Nobody imports Silvias. Importing cars costs an assload, mostly because of safety but also because of emissions. Not that other countries' emissions standards are more lax thn ours (they aren't), but if the engine was never sold here it still has to be tested for the EPA. Motorex has done this testing for the Skyline GT-R and GTSt.

Can you go into more detail on this? I just want to know exactly what I would be getting my self into if I did this. Thanks

it will pass sniffer if you install it correctly, get all the hookups correctly and use a cat. yes it will pass, and iv'e spoken with various importers about this.

u wont pass visual though. once you start to modify it you wont pass too.

if you are buying the engine you are already running the risk of losing your car and heavy fines. if you dont have the balls or connections, probably best to stick with the KA.

whether you pass smog or not, it's still illegal... if that's what you're concerned about. If not, just find someone you can pay on the side to pass you
