my cousin now works at a mitsu dealer now so i visited him at work. my friend ann wanted me to test drive an outlander. it's a 2.4L dohc with sportronic transmission and all wheel drive, but engine is just too small. in first gear there is no difference between quarter throttle and full throttle. sportronic didn't help that thing at all. if anything, it needs a turbo.
i asked my cousin to bring up an Eclipse. no automatic convertible, 4 cylinder BS either, i told him. so he gets the GTS with 200 horsepower and a manual, hardtop. not a bad looking car i don't think. as soon as i let out the clutch my cousin is already asking me if it's like my 240SX. i said jeez hold on, let me run the shit out of it first!
i didn't have enough room to get on it, so i was just testing the torque of the motor and letting it rev from 3000 on up in 3rd gear. WOW these cars have nice usable torque anywhere, low revs and high. it felt like having a perfectly sized turbo, already spooled up (at low psi) on a 240sx. so we start going around some turns, and i understand why some folks prefer RWD. it's the first FWD car i've driven really. it was very stable and all, because of the large wheels, but i wouldn't feel as confident shifting the weight like i do in the 240.
i'm came to a stoplight, revved the engine and i didn't think it sounded too bad. when the light turns green, i launch it at 3100 RPM and keep it floored. again, not used to the FWD so the launch wasn't like i thought it would be. as it's about to catch grip, the revs keep getting higher and i bust out a madd phat "one tire fire" until 5000. no limited slip??? for a $24,000 car? hmmm.
i shift into second gear and got a pretty mean scratch. it sure does take off when you shift, but they really lack high end. they are definitely a little quicker than a 240sx when just driving around, but when you floor it, it feels like 85% of the power of my 240SX. it has 200hp i think, but i'm guessing the weight of the car holds back the potential.
it's not a bad car really, but not the greatest $ to thrill ratio. it would be a much nicer car if they made it RWD, and turbocharged the 6, or designed a RWD version of the turbo 4.
all i have to say is i can't wait until the new Lancer hits the lot!
