View Full Version : 8" subs in my S14 Doors!!!!

I am an installer at a local Electronics store, and I was EXTREMELY bored yesterday, so i brought my car in to the bay, and removed my door panel. and i was blown away by how much room is in the door! Its big enough for (with a little cutting) an 8" sub. I was just curious if anyone else has done this? if i did do it, i would need prolly another 6" molded into the door, to balance it out. and then upgrade the factory tweeters.
Let me know what you guys think!

post some pictures i would love to see that.. i was planning on using premium pioneer 200watt 6 1/2" 3-way speakers up front.. they have a built in tweeter, then putting either and 6 or 8 inch open sub.. maybe polk or kicker... does anyone know of any other good small subs?
def post some pics later though..

DONT USE PIONEER!!!
Pioneer high end speakers SUCK!!! go with Boston acoustics, or the alpine type r's are excellent. infinity isnt to bad.
The reason i dont like pioneer, is most of their speakers sound like crap, and they blow all the time. Im just telling you what i have to fix in my customers cars!
btw the pioneer subs ROCK!!! as long as they are the gold impp's

I dunno man, something about that doesn't seem right. But hey its your car and you can try it out and let us know. As for me I'm happy with my Infinity's...3-ways front, 2-ways back and Basslink coming soon. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':sly:'>

you could put those and one of their component sts in your doors <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> and the cones are carbon fiber --- cool!
BTW their site sucks, but their products are QUALITY!

15's are too much. I will be happy with the three 12's i will have. with xtant amps, alpine highs, and either alpine subs or xtant subs

These are my preferences...
Midrange - components:
Controlled Dispersion Technologies:
http://www.cdtaudio.com/
Subwoofers:
Alumapro
http://www.alumapro.com/
Amps/processors/crossovers/etc...
Zapco Comp. Series
http://www.zapco.com/
Major brands are OK as far as decks are concerned... you want to make sure you have a high output voltage... Zapco runs all balanced line (like a recording studio) so there is no chance for interference... you can coil the power cord around the balanced line cables to the amp and won't get any interference <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> in my car the deck outputs imediately go into a zapco slx4 crossover... which switches it from std rca to balanced line DIN <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Yea, I've opened the door panel up. I saying it doesn't seem right, because your having subs in the front. IMO they would be better in the back where the other speakers can go. This is just my opinion, highs are better in the front, lows in the back.

i have heard of two of those brands, but they are prolly really expensive, and the reason i dont go that route, is i get EVERYTHING we sell at cost.
Some of you may have heard of our stores,
Ultimate Electronics

not necesarily... the design of the S14 doors can handle it well... you would build a box for the sub in the door - you wouldn't mount it free-air!

you can make it free air, it just wouldnt sound as good. and yes it will be hard to do, but i think in the long run it will be worth it.

im an installer also and yeah some small 8's would fit i thought about doing it but im not too much for cutting up my car and i'd like to keep the weight down. I'd just stick with the six inch component up front and relocate the tweeters. Thats what i did and it sound good.
You can also fit an 8 in the back pannel beside the rear seat (S14).
or just do like i did and glass in the whole trunk and stick the bass in the back.... Ive got a carbon fiber speaker box and that looks good in the back

You'll probably rattle something loose on the inside of the window regulator....and you'll probably magnetize your doors (haha....errr). Other than that....I dont see why not. Just make sure you fabricate some sort of grill so you dont kick out the large woofer cone. Ive heard that the 8 inch JL audio are nice....also kicker solobaric. Just make sure you have an adjustible cross over and EQ ....that way when a certain frequency range (HZ) rattles the windows, you can isolate it and try and kill it.
Also....while were on the topic of stereo installs......I have an S13....and Im thinking of trying to install a pair of tweeters in the back corners of my headliner....and possibly an LCD DVD screen in the middle front of my headliner. Any ideas?

when you install tweeters, you want them to be the same distance from your ears, as the actuall speaker, (woofer, Driver... whatever you want to call it). keep that in mind and go from there.
also try and keep the two in the same generall area. it will mess with the sound stage if you dont.

As for the screen, dont put one on the headliner! its expensive, illegal, and it just looks dumb. if you want a screen get an in-dash unit. the kenwood 911-dvd is VERY nice, its touch screen also.
if you want to get really custom, we put a 10" lcd touch screen from a laptop into some dudes jeep, and we relocated his heater controlls. he installed a laptop under the rear seat, so he can just click and drag music, movies, and games to his screen, as well as DVD. that was by far the best.

obey point source theory... not only do you want the tweeters the same distance to your ear from the midrange woofer... you want it on the SAME PLANE!... soooo build kick panels, or otherwise place the tweeter as close to the midrange as possible!
Hey man, you may have a ton of room in the door panel now, but make sure you have tons of room when the windows are down <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

I definitely think that having subs up front would mess up the sound staging. It would just sound bad.
Has anyone tried putting a 6" mid in the middle of the dash? Kinda like on a 3rd gen RX-7. Does anybody know if there is airducts under there, yeah i think that would be a good idea.

With the sub in the side pannels, id use the passenger side because there are less wires on that side, but its not hard. We created a little fiberglass box inside the car just to seal off a couple of areas. And you will want to make a new side pannel out of MDF. There were no problems with putting the sub in no rattles coming from the sub

i got your back on this one,
but it's mostly the new stuff that sucks. especially SONY, i dont think they do any research, just stick some red and grey fins alll over the place, throw in some more colors and voila!!!
where as 5 years ago when all their stuff was grey and black. they used to make good decks, amps, crossover etc. now they dont make anything good.
kenwood and pioneer are wal-mart fodder, i dont care if you have the top of theline stuff, it's all show and no go. especially decks with multiple faces and flips and shit.
NAKAMICHI sources.... yyyyeahh and not too expensive either. like $180 for a 35z source on ebay.
zapco, hifonics, cdt, ads, dynaudio, focal, mcintosh, soundstream, MB quart....
you dont need 8's in the door, get really good components and you wont know the diff.
however that would be kinda cool to have an 8 and 6.5's in the door.
isnt there are site where dude put a 12 in the dash of a 240<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>
