well i found out my car is considered "junk" at the dmv. only way i can get title in hand and on the streets is to register it as a salvaged vehicle. only thing i need is to get a brake and light adjustment certification.

what id like to know is what exactly do they check? i think ill fail because i have the silvia s13 face on (dual projectors) and my car's reverse lights dont work (auto-->5spd). my brakes are stock and are in good condition, so im sure ill pass that. but yups anyone got any tips or suggestions or anything that can help me..HOLLA. please dont make me feel dumber than i already am. peace.

So your car has never been in an accident/auctioned/etc, but just because it's old it gets a salvage title? That doesn't make sense... did you just buy it?

You probably won't fail inspection, as they'll be looking more for "functionality" of equipment than "OEM quality"... have you seen the lights on 1980s cars? They blow. Just go get inspected, and take your salvage title.

In the mean time, you should have a 30day or 60day temp tag, btw.

Pretty sure you're going to have to get your reverse lights working. Sucks that Cali doesn't allow rebuilt titles. Good-luck!

i bought this car in JAN 08. had other problems but didnt really care (smog issues and chp inspections), and now this. i think its just school, this, and other shit thats bringing me down. i think this thing has been in an accident before cuz the radiator support is pretty messed up. they threw on the front conversion and it lines up good though. but yeah as for the JUNK title, i dont know where that came from. i guess ill get the reverse lights fixed and do my own version of the brake and light thingy, then do the real inspection in a couple of weeks.......damn.

PS yeah i have til march 8th. anyone want to buy my car??? hahahaha

you can make the back-up lights work with an on/off toggle switch from radio shack. just wire it into something easy. you could also use a household light switch. found out that works when i had to pass inspection in mississippi and i needed a horn.

they check the life of your brake pads and rotors. for the lights they check bumper light, side markers, turn signals, highbeam, reverse lights, brake lights. if everything works you should be fine.

Sell it and use the money to buy a cleaner better condition S13.

I had to do a brake and light inspection.

All your lights have to work and put out certain quality of lighting. I had a 96 zenki with a 97 front and they did not care about that. I doubt they will give you crap for the silvia front but you never know since some shops are hella picky. Also everything has to be bolted down correctly so if your missing some bolts go throw them on the front end cause they will make you fail for that as well.

They check to see if your leaking any kind of brake fluid.

how is that toggle switch going to work? i was just planning on doing it the correct way as listed under the auto-->5spd write ups on various sites.

PS i was just joking about selling it. i got it for 2600, so if u want it for 2600, then come get it as is. just need brake and light inspections. PM for specs if ur really really really really serious.

i've heard that one of the reasons the S13 silvia front end didnt make it over to the US was because the center of the headlight wasnt the minimum 21in.(?) from the ground. the pop ups are obviously higher once open.

but there's a chance that they might not check for that, esp if the car isnt lowered too much.

how is that toggle switch going to work?

this is the wiring order you would use.

power source->toggle switch->lights

and these are your results.

power source->toggle switch "off"->no lights

power source->toggle switch "on"->lights

you have so many options on what to use for the power source, it all depends on whats easier for you to wire up. (also something to think of, the same toggle switch mentioned here also makes an awesome dollar menunaire kill switch)

ooo ok. i just assumed it was working differently. i understand how toggle switchs will work, i just didnt understand how it would work in my situation. i need the reverse lights to come on when the car is in reverse (like stock), and not MANUALLY do it. i think ill fail still for that.

ive already got some info on getting the reverse light done, if i fail at that, ill give the toggle switch idea a look. maybe instead of a toggle switch, i can use its a similar mechanism and hook something or grounding something when in reverse to "trick" the person doing the inspection.

also is this like smoging? pay once and if u fail u have to fix it, then u have to pay to retest again? if so, then got damn i want to get it right the first time so i wont have to pay 100 twice for it.

I don't get why everyone gets so bent out of shape over owning a salvage titled car.
My S13.4 has a salvage title from scuffed paint on the oem rear bumper.

Although to the op, I understand all the hoops you have to jump through to get one on the road.

yeah its not that its salvaged, its that i had to go through the process of all these bullshit, then finding out its salvaged, then having to go through the bullshit of titling it. but o well. just cant mod my car for a bit. its what i get for jumping the gun and coming back to the 240 game..hahahaha. i heart the 240 too much.

find a relative who lives in another state and register the car there. As for the Auto to manual swap, search and find the thread. It tells you EXACTLY what to connect in order for the reverse lights to work. Actually would take less time than making your switches. When you go to get your car insoected, try and have as much stock shit as you can...ie no big ass mufflers, no air intake/piping,. That way they wont have to OVERLOOK at your car. Dont give them more reasons to go any further than they must. Oh, and shoot the shit with them while they are inspecting it...get on his good side lol. HTH

If you dont plan on reselling the car just go with salvage title

Timeattack: What does reselling a car and salvaged title have to do with anything?

Op: Fix it. Done.

just make sure all lights that are on your car will work. depending on where you go, its up to the shop to decide whether your okay with the silvia front. make sure the indicators for the e brake and high beam work. =) no leaks from brake fluid, or cracks on the brake lines, and pad/rotor thickness up to spec. you'll be fine. if you fail, usually shops will just give you the cert. when you come back with all the stuff fixed, at no extra charge. hope this helps.

well, the last inspection i had to go to, they had me sit in my car and work the horn lights et c. on my own. if thats not your case (ive only had to pass inspections in tx, la, and ms) then yeah, you're screwed in that aspect.

but if they have you do all that stuff yourself while they just walk around and make sure everything lights up and goes "honk", then awesome, because when he says "let me see your reverse lights" you throw it into reverse and flip a switch. voila, lights.
