Ok I recently did my swap on my S13 with an SR Blacktop. I took out the motor from my old hatch and swithced it over onto my other S13 hatch (motor been out and not running for 3 moths). I put some Royal Purple 10W/40 wen i cranked it over it made this type of sound TATATATATA at normal steady rpms wich is 900 now my motor is advanced by 38 degrees now wen i took it out for a liitle test drive my motor was running real rough and the sound on the mototr just got real loud so i was thinking :wtf: now that sound turned into a clanking sound. BUt wen i stopped, it went back into that normal tatata sound. Wat i did today was took off the valve cover and spinned the cams manualy clock wise and notice at one point that wen turning, it turned real smooth and then it got hard to turn and wen i turned it made a clack sound i did not notice wat it was but i repeated this 3 times and it still did the same CLACK at one point of the turn. Wat do u guys think this type of situation is? or, is that clanking noise normal wen i turn the cam manualy? thanks i greatly apricciate the help. ( sorry for the long life story just giving u most of the info.):ughug:

Was it running perfectly fine when you took it out of the car? Did you do anything to the motor while it was out of the car? Sounds like timing is off more than 38 degrees and possibly a valve is hitting a piston or maybe just a bent valve... I could be wrong...did you do anything with the timing chain while the motor was out of the car? That's the only thing I can really think of that would cause it to be had to crank at one point. Check it again and see what valves are down at the point it is hard to crank at and then check to see where the piston on that same cylinder is at inside the block top, middle, or bottom (screwdriver down the spark plug hole). That will let you know whether the valves could be hitting the piston anywayz.

Upload a vid, but almost sounds like a spun rod bearing, if its a quite tap at idle and gets louder through the RPMs. More than likely it a spun bearing. the Valve train will have more of a ticking noise.
I've heard alot of horror stories about RP in SR's so switch that out to some Mobile 1 10W30
Why is your timing set at 38 Degs? Stock is 15 most ppl only advance it like 18-23? I believe

Well the motor wen i took it off it was running completely fine i did nothing to the motor wen i took it out the only few changes i did 2 it was a new nismo thermo stat and the other wen the motor was installed i added a front mount that about it. But for the degrees on it thats the way the motor had it wen i bought it i know its 38 degrees cuz john from RPS cheked it for me wen i first installed it on my first hatch. Another thing i tried using Mobil 1 and i also heard it wasnt no good but if it came 2 changing oil again id would defenately go quaker state 10W/40 fully synthetic. for the vid ill load it on friday so u guys can see wat im talking about but if u have anymore toughts or answers that be awsome thanks guys

I just did a swap myself and used Royal Purple too. I have not had any problems, but I also heard some questionable things about it. I don't remember the details, but had to do with water/moisture and poor cold start protection.
I've always used Mobil1 in all my other cars, but RP is actually cheaper now so I thought I would give it a try. In the next week or two I'm gonna switch back to the tried and true Mobil1, just to stay safe.
