View Full Version : Is the Greddy turbo kit obsolete?

http://www.greddy.com/img/PHP/products/jpg/566.jpg

it comes with the piggyback e manage, new injectors, fuel rail, etc. basically everything but an upgraded fuel pump and the intercooler is optional for $400 more. i know i could piece out a kit a lot cheaper but i want reliability first and foremost and the power levels it puts out are plenty for what i'm looking for. if someone could point me in the right direction on some high quality parts i may be able to put together cheaper i'd appreciate it.

well basically pick out everything that the kit comes with, then search the sponsors of this forum and the marketplace section, as well as google until you find good deals on all the parts.

check this site out and see what other members are currently running for turbo setups.

also try
http://www.ka-t.org/forums/

a turbo setup is a big thing, and the amount of knowledge you'll gain from doing this research yourself will help you in the long run.

Yes...I had one on my KA for 18k and took it off. A 20G and 3700cc injectors, You will just waste money unless your happy with 210hp.

It's not. I've looked into it. Never got approved and never will be.

Go with JGS if you want something similar, but way better than greddy.

i don't see any kits listed from AMS, JGS looks like a quality vendor but i think the turbos may be a little big for my needs, i'm only looking for 190-200whp.

just signed up on ka-t and did a search and the greddy kit doesn't get any love there either.

Really. Stillen advertises that it is legal. I'll probably just ask at the Greddy garage sale. That's basically the only thing holding me back from turboing.

honestly, if you have the money, and you dont want to fuck around with sourcing every single piece seperately. the greddy kit is great. I, for one, hate sourcing all the little parts to making a reliably functioning turbo kit, ive done it once and hated it, so now i'm going SR instead.

good luck with the build, whatever you decide to do.

Fuck street legal, once you get up there in HP you will have to sacrifice something that makes your car street legal.

DOHC kit:
http://jgstools.com/turbo/kadepkg.jpg
http://http://jgstools.com/turbo/index2.html
Includes-
AGP/Turbonetics .50 trim T3/T04E turbo (.63 A/R)
KA24DE turbo manifold
JGS400 Wastegate
KA24(D)E downpipe and wg pipe set
T3 mounting studs
JGS KA24E oil feed & return line kit
Turbo cement
EGR plug
Power Steering Resivore Relocation Kit
Exhaust wrap and clamps for downpipe
0.062" Oil Pressure Restrictor (for use if oil pressure is too high).

This is not a complete turbo kit, many other parts will be required!
Please read text section below.

Excellent start for a solid KA24DE turbo system!
To complete the exhaust we recommend a 3"SR20DET downpipe, high flow cat (or test pipe), and 3" cat back exhaust. SR20DET intercooler kits can be adapted to this setup with minimum modification. Fueling for this turbo should be at least an upgraded fuel pump, Fuel computer (E-manage, SAFC, DTEC, etc.), Z32 maf, and 550cc injectors. Alternatively a JimWolfTech ECU can be used instead of a fuel computer (for those who want a pre-tuned setup). Use of our bypass valve plumbed back into the intake before the MAF is recommended.Custom turbos can be ordered instead of the .50 trim, price depends on turbo. We can order any turbonetics turbo with many being little to no price increase. The .50 trim .63A/R setup is good for upto 450WHP.

just buy the jgs kit.. i made 205 wheel with stock exhaust!!! @ 5.6 psi.. and jwt

with stright pipe i did 245 wheel at 5.6psi.. and jwt..

that was a very simple setup.. but you will get boost happy after awhile.. 245 wheel gets old real fast:2f2f:

Did they ever solve that nasty boost creep business with the Greddy kits? That alone would make me not want to buy it, street legal or not.

I'm probably not gonna track my car, so I'm not too worried about going way up there in hp. I would just like a little more than stock. I think I would be happy with whatever the Greddy could produce especially if I didn't have to worry about getting ref'd. I've been driving stock for 5 years so I don't think 205 or 245 would get old real fast.

I was under the impression that the greddy kit was only in the CARB/DOT approval stages but never actually got approved....get a decent turbo...make friends with guys at jiffy lube and get urself an inspection sticker

JGS manifolds suck.

This is a totally unfounded comment.:rl: Log manifolds are known for their help in quick spool up times and being better fitting than off the shelf header manifolds. Don't believe me, ask Matt Martin:

You seriously picked up 40hp with a straight pipe? I'm not doubting you, it just seems . . . amazing. Was there anything else involved?

And I swear I read that log manifolds can actually produce better low end torque numbers.

a straight through 3" exhaust does wonders on a turbo car.

and +1 for JGS manifolds.

Actually, thats not true.

Greddy has the 240sx turbo kit slated as one of their next kits to be legalized. How long this will take, i'm not exactly sure, but this is info DIRECT from the source.

To the OP, for what you're looking for, this kit is fine. People forget that you have an option to upgrade your injector size before you order the kit. Most dealers dont tell you that, but you can. For more power, add 550s or 740s, an intercooler, and a proper tune and you're good to go.

FYI, the new e-manage that you get with this kit really isnt that bad at all. If you wanna constantly change shit, then yeah get a stand alone, but if you're like me and you wanna just have something simple that you can leave alone, then the e-manage is fine. Or you can slang the e-manage on ebay or something and get a JWT ecu if you really dont wanna mess with anything extra.

If this is just a street car, the greddy kit is more than enough.

Could you piece it together for cheaper? Yeah, probably. PERSONALLY though, i hate piecing shit together (i'm lazy) and i'd rather just buy a kit out right and have the peace of mind knowing all the parts i need are there and all of them are new and none of it has been fucked with by some half wit before. My time and peace of mind is worth the extra money spent IMO.

Hope that helps.

Actually its not an "unfounded comment." I used a JGS log style manifold.

Sure they're decent manifolds but if you run a large enough turbo (anything bigger than a t28) then you will have tons of clearance issues with the BMC.

Unless you weld the flange off center from the manifold, which is a stupid thing to do.
EDIT: You see how matt has his flange between the 1st and 2nd runners? Thats why it works for him. because its not centered.

I'm not knocking the "style" of manifold. I'm knocking the specific JGS manifold. Its crap. and it looks like crap.

Tubular > log.

I <3'd my ETD which I upgraded to shortly after. Best decision ever.

and if I ever went Ka-t again, I'd buy another ETD over JGS any day of the week. I don't care if I was given a JGS manifold for FREE.

I have the kit, & it's not bad, but only if you don't want high hp. I bought it & loved it at first, but if you want anything over 240(ish)whp, than you should piece your own kit. I'm already gonna replaced the injectors, e-manage, and possibly the turbo & manifold. You live & you learn I guess.
It's not CARB certified, that's the main reason I bought mine to begin w/. They were supposed to be, but never went through w/ it.

Where did you put your flange? finish reading.
If you dont center it, you won't have clearance issues.
but then its over the top of runners 1 and 2.

If you buy the pre-built JGS manifold and not the kit, the turbo placement is gravy. My sohc manifold has enough clearance for the turbo to bmc (have a heat shield between 'em).

If you get it powdercoated, it makes it look tons better. But srsly what are you expecting from cast iron? It's pretty unfair to compare a tubular manifold to a log manifold anyway. Recently a friend welded on a T2 flange and is now running a GT28 on his JGS manifold w/ a KADE.

i loved my greddy kit for a while. the upgrades are limited tho. i can only run 440cc injectors. its definitely a reliable kit. ive had it for a few years and nothing involving the kit has failed. as for the boost creep, that only happens after you put an aftermarket down pipe on. its really not that bad either. it only creeps up about 2 psi.

ive heard rumors about the carb legal issue. once source told me it was only carb legal if a greddy professional installed it. i live in TN so its not an issue for me. it doesnt throw check engine lights unless there is a real problem.

putting the manifold on sucks. there isnt a lot of room to put the bottom studs in. also taking the oil pan off and putting it back on after tapping it took 11 hours.

i think you will be happy with it.
let me know if you have anymore questions
