Alright so today i am going to go pick up a engine from a fellow friend of mine and he said it works just needs a gasket set, hes dropping a sr into his 240 so he pulled his sohc and now is giving it to me for free and tranny for 30.

My car currently has a dohc ka, in it with 178xxxx miles on it.

My question and would like input is, should i fix the sohc and put that into my car and build the dual cam?

Or should i just leave the single cam on the engine stand and start rebuilding the single cam?

Which engine should i go with turbo'ing and rebuilding?

(im not going to do this over night its going to take me a while since im a fulltime student with a job)

Inputs please.

do a compression and leak-down test on both engines

whichever comes out better, you should turbo

if both come out to like 90, 160, 54, 18, then you shouldn't do either

Agreed, make sure the compression numbers are the same across all cylinders or very close.

Agreed, also keep in mind however that parts are going to be much easier to find on the DOHC than the SOHC, especially when it comes to adding a turbo.

I'm not saying you can't turbo a sohc, it would just be easier/cheaper in the long run for the dohc.

rebuild then turbo, do it right the first time.

rebuild the DOHC, even to stock. and then turbo that.

The SOHC is a good motor as long as its put together right, just is hard to find parts for.

single cam is higher compression also, am i right?

its a pretty waste of time to put in the sohc wen your car is dohc. your not going to have ps. and you need to do a lil re wireing.

tell your friend thanks for the sohc and sell it for what its worth.
and then take that money. and check your motor to see if it has good rings still.

then invest in a small turbo kit and a boost gauge.

If you have the time and means to swap the KA's easily, I would put the SOHC in. Then I would rebuild the DOHC to stock, maybe a little more. Then get the turbo parts and put them on the DOHC. Then drop it back in.

The SOHC is a little tougher to pass through smog, and the turbo parts are harder to find a nd a little more expensive.

thats why I suggest the swap, and keeping the DOHC for the long run.

single cam is higher compression also, am i right?

some people put in sohc pistons for more power on na setups, so i'll say yes

No, single cam compression is lower. The majority are 8.6:1, the early early single cams were 9.1:1.

I have arias 8.8:1 pistons in my kae-t.

Like I said on nwn, I loves me some single cam, but I would concede that the dual cam will probably be easier and cheaper to turbo. Though, single cam management is pretty easy (especially since you can get local help for that ;) --- just shoot me a pm). Plus, the single cam is stupid easy to work on.
