View Full Version : What tires would you recommend in 215/35/18?

I just bought this car a few days ago and want to replace all tires. At the moment the car has Ultra HPR Radials in 215/35/18. Im not sure if this is a tire quality or run of the mill but I want something that will be "pretty good" but wont break the bank. I live in South Florida so ive been looking at summer tires. On tirerack here is the one that looked attractive:
Kumho Ecsta SPT
Im trying to spend less than $135 per tire thought shipping only adds to the cost so if you have something close to that I can search locally.

Your local tire shop should be able to help you!!

Your right, but I'd like to hear what people on here what to say so I can atleast have an idea on what to look for.

I currently run the Kumho Ecsta SPTs, they are ok, not amazing. Best bang for the buck out right now is: BFGoodrich g-force T/A KDW 2, they are very comparable to Michelin Pilot Sports, but for like $50 cheaper: about $130 each. They have a crazy looking tread pattern, you'll see what I mean.
Haven't run them yet, but buying myself a set pretty soon. All this advice is being passed second hand from my room mate who works at a tire shop. He knows his stuff too.
Also, look at Tirerack.com, you can compare tires side by side and see where they rate on road comfort, wet/dry grip, tread life, etc...

Those Falken's were actually my second choice, I think they are very similar but have slightly less tread life iirc.

falken fk452 is a nice tire if you are not into super high performance competition and just want some good grip on the street that will last more than 15k miles. there is also some different modesl from federal tires that are a mainstay of this forum.

federals :)
the 595 is about $63( at retail) for 17's
an 18 should be closer to say $88(at retail) great tires decent tread wear and plenty of traction. option magazine rated them 1st against the bridgestone reo1-r for cornering ability an 2nd in wet and dry traction!
ill see if i can dig up the article

i think you should run a 225/35/18 they are like the same hight as the 215 but are wider better grip? and will fit the wheel better.

Easy there killa. What does that matter? He's just asking for advice on a good tire that comes in the size he wants to run?

TIRE SIZE is affected by RIM SIZE... Have you ever fit a 215/35/18 tire on a 10 inch wide wheel? What if he's running a 18x9.5 plus 0 offset with only rolled lips... GUESS WHAT? He cant run a wide ass tire then.
OR, what if he's running a 18x8 with a 30 offset? Then he can fit a different size tire without clearance issues in the rear.
SO
FITMENT HAS A HUGE ROLE IN TIRE CHOICE.

That's all fine and good. He didn't ask what size tire to run on the wheels. He obviously just bought the car, and is gonna replace the tires with the same size that's on it. Doesn't matter wtf kinda fitment he has, he didn't ask about that. He asked about a good tire that came in a certain size. He obviously knows what size he wants to run.

I know what role fitment plays in tire choice. I'm pretty sure I've been around that block a couple times. I think your caps lock button is on intermittent or something. Get that shit checked out, unless you were actually trying to yell at me, in which case, it wouldn't matter. Why? BECAUSE IT'S THE FUCKING INTERNET. :loco:

The new dunlop direzza. Maybe $10 more per tire than the federal. Just not a complete pile of crap.
edit:
225/40 is like $20 more per tire than you are looking to spend.

I ran those too. They're more of a budget tire. Still, not a bad tire. Stretch easily, since the sidewalls are single ply. Not very sticky, but they're not meant to be. The new ones, however, as Johngriff said, are RE-01 killers.

The thing I have noticed with the fusions, that really really turned me off was;
Overheating and greasing really fast.
The overall build of the tire/sidewall seems WAY larger than other tires. It really turned me off.
Then obviously the falkens over the federals.

Fusions are plain gross
Federals are pretty ass too.
FK452s are nice.
T1Rs are pretty cool too.
35 sidewall is gonna wash out like a motherfucker from having 80 load rating.
I've run Hankook Ventus and FK452's in that size.
They're both good but I prefer the FK452's.

I called the place I plan to get an alignment from. Under $125 per tire they recommended the Riken Raptor and Hankook Venus HR 714(?) . No one seems the have the fk 452 unless its online. I figure if neither of these arent bad tires I'll go with them. I just need something to hold me till summer. Thanks a lot for the help.
edit: nvm seems the Rikens suck.

risky not really unless you go stupid with the pressures.
i have gotten a nexens to have sum amount of traction at 24psi hahaha
justt play it smart..
if federals were so horrible no one would buy them..seeing as nexens are the same price range and they are horrid.

Comparing the federals against the nexens, its like top ramen vs cup of noodles. Cheap, tastes ok, won't fill you up, definitely not good for you.

Yeah, for amature drift days.
But I wouldn't be comfortable with my little sister daily driving on federals on her car. So I sprung, more cash for Falkens, from citytireonline, and it wasn't that much more, and now I have peace of mind she is safe.
I wouldn't recommend them for daily.

why not if i may ask?
i know not everyone drifts here..
but these tires take the abuse very well and dont turn to mush once they get up in temps.

Falken azenis rt-615 ftw!!! If u can get them at a local shop!! Or the dunlop direzza! I paid 165 installed and balanced for my dunlop direzza's... Well i also have the hook up so might cost a bit more but it's worth it... they out grip my azenis
gotta240
02-07-2008, 07:06 PM
rt615 is not a daily driver tire.... It would almost be safer to run a federal(ok, not really) with an amature driver behind the wheel of a dd.
johngriff
02-07-2008, 08:34 PM
No I can appreciate the federals for being well layered on the contact patch, staying dry, and when stretched kind of progressive. When squared (lets say 205/50/16 on a 16x7), they are not very forgiving at the limit.
Also from my own "seat of my pants", I think the sidwalls feel a little soft, both driving, and actually feeling the un-mounted tire (in comparison to other unmounted tires such as the re-01, rt-615, dirrezza).
The wet braking is also sub-standard, which turned me off in terms of a daily tire.
So when choosing tires for my little sister, I was looking for good wet traction, predictable oversteer at the limit, and stiffer sidewalls for more driver feedback. Ended up with the falkons.

Some really great info in here. Guys, I went with Hankook Ventus Sport K104's in 215/35/18 $107 per. I felt confortable with them based on review and the fact I could get them locally. This thread makes me wish this forum was broken down into sub forums, I think a tire and wheel forum would be interesting.
Thanks again guys, I'll let you know what I think about them.
