View Full Version : Short term effects of larger oil restrictor???

I have a brand new GT2871R.....due to extenuating circumstances, might be forced to use the stock oil line for a short period of times (maybe a few days or a week or 2).
I know that you are sposed to use a 0.03" restrictor on GT BB turbos. I have it, but the line I am using needs to be replaced, so I can;t use the restrictor for now
Does anyone know if using the stock banjo line (with it's 0.08" builtin restrictor) for a short time period will cause any damage?
thanks

dont do it
dont do it
might be ok but u want to take that risk????
keep ur stock turbo for now.
Stock restrictor is about 0.060" ID. You should be fine with this on a GT2871R - and in fact, starting about a year or so ago all Garrett GT series turbos have a restrictor built into the CHRA oil inlet(looking at it should tell you if it has this or not).
I've done extensive instrumented testing of liquid/oil cooling systems on fighter jets, and on an orifice size or about 0.060" you won't exceed the Garrett spec'd maximum of 20-25 psi of oil pressure in the CHRA.
0.035-0.040" gets the pressure down even lower, but it's not necessary as long as the seals are holding IMO.
You should be fine.. especially if this is just a temporary fix.

Dousan, I would love to, but everything is already on the car, my tuning appointment is made for Monday, and I am semi-SOL
Def:
Yeah this is a temp fix....my oil pressure maxes out around 75-80......should I be okay on the dyno getting tuned? By temporary, I mean maybe 500 miles at most, until I can get that line replaced.
Will pulling to redline under boost make the problem worse?
thx

You need an oil line. Will the one from a t28 work?
I have Taka Lines.
If so...call me.

how big is the restrictor on the taka lines? i thought the fitting provided was much to big?
also can you put a restrictor at the block or does it have to be at the turbo?

The Taka restrictor is a separate fitting that screws into the CHRA....the oil line then goes onto the restrictor fitting
I have the 0.03" fitting which is what you are sposed to use. The stock banjo bolt has a restriction that isn't quite this small.
The restrictor drops the oil pressure down much below what your oil pressure is at the filter.
In case you're still nervous, the same CHRA bearing used in S14/S15 turbos uses the EXACT same restrictor bolt as the S13 SR. So Nissan apparently thought it was fine for the life of the car, and so do I. :D

Ok....and it's cool for them floor it on the dyno right?
If you're wrong, please send me a check for $1100.....
Just playing thanks for the help man

Yeah I am pussy because I want to take care of my brand new $1100 turbo.
I hope your seals go
Just because nothing "broke" doesn't mean you aren't causing long term damage.
you are a genius

200 more days under warrenty
And with your luck, itll take a shit on the 201st day...:fawkd:
If Garret tells you to do it, why wouldn't you just do what they say?
Oil pressure is based on RPM - not throttle position.
If you're really that nervous about it, go to a local hydraulic supply/hose place and have them swage you up a -4/-3 AN/JIC line like what you've got that's leaking. Just bring yours in and they should be able to make you up one without much issue.

^word.
My buddy has a gt28r on his S13 SR and is using the stock lines, no issues in 3 years.
