I recently recieved an engine check light and my idle jumped up to 1,500 shortly after then went back down to aprox 900 (where my car has normally be idling) So today I went down to the local autozone to borrow an OBDII scanner and I plugged it in and it didn't even power up when I turned my car on (I didn't turn the engine on) Then I got another one thinking it was faulty and that one did the same thing, and that one didn't turn on either.

Is there something wrong with my ecu?

Oh... and just to make sure I'm not crazy I have a '98.

check all fuses. one of the terminals on the obd port should be hot at least with the key on (i'm not sure if its hot at all times). if the fuse for that terminal is blown then you will not get communication with the obd port.

Fuses inside the car by the pedals or in the engine bay?

OBD port has constant power, but the ECU signal is only on with the key.

Like they all said, check fuses and make sure theres nothing visibly wrong with the wiring.

I was surprised my s14 was OBDII, being a 95, built in 4/94

Is the OBD port below the glovebox? If so, it's still OBD-I. Only the vehicles with the port beside the hood release handle are OBD-II. We've discussed this many times before.

Mine's OBDI but had the same problem, tracing back and finding a broken wire in the dash harness fixed it, I believe it was the +12v wire to the obd port.

IIRC my 98 has both OBD2 and Nissan Consult port

All 91+ cars have the CONSULT port.

All 95+ cars also have the OBD port, but the 95 model is only specified for OBD-I. 96+ run OBD-II. Code scanners can read either system, but the actual feedback and code reference is different.

And we've all known this for at least 12 years, so why do we need to bring it up again once a week?

The OBDII port is above my clutch pedal and I am going to check fuses tomorrow.
