I went up to cleveland today to drive a 91 5spd. coupe. 58k miles, girl driven. It was nice, fun to drive, nothing like my old ttz.

But there was this grinding noise coming from the no. 1 cylinder, inside the head, even at idle... it sounded like something was loose or wobbling in there.

When I got there I questioned them because the car was warm, they wouldn't tell me where it had been driven though.

I called like the last 3 days and it was never there, when they supposedly "cleaned it" it was still dirty.

how can you tell the noise is coming from the no. 1 cylinder? Cause thats amazing.

when you put your head right above the valve cover, the noise is definitely emanating from the front. right around the first plug.

Well, for the noise near the #1 cylinder, my best guess would just be that the timing chain is slappin the guides, thats right in that area and can make a nice racket even at idle.  that would be right in the front of the motor.

58k seems a lil early to be hearin the noise, started hearin mine at about 108k, but eh, it might be it.

just a thought

Hmmm a 91 with 58k and a timing chain rattle .... looks like the odometer has been rolled back if you didn't guess that already. Other than the engine is the car in good condition? If so I'd buy it if it was less than a 1000. No telling how many miles are on the car.

It's that the typical broken chain guide hitting on the chain?  remove the cover, take out broken guide, put cover back on and your set??

yeah, dsc, thats what i was hintin at, i removed both of mine, and the sound is gone, its great haha. if thats the deal there, than its no big deal, just means ur chain has a lil more slack in it that it should...which is a whole nother discussion hehe...
