so my cars previous owner swapped the stock for a redtop SR, and the oil filter is completely invisible from the engine bay, and from under the car i can hardly put a hand on it,
is there any chance that the owner that swapped the engines neglected something?

Dont try and change the oil filter from under the car. There is a small gap but just enough room under the intake mani to get the oil filter out. I just changed mine yesterday. I would also suggest u use a mobile 1 extended performance oil filter it's bigger and better. Being bigger will also help when u change it the next oil change. Not hard at all... Just annoying. Go from on top on the engine not under...

just a suggestion. though they are not always trustworthy. but hey if you cant, you cant.

well its common sense that you'd get an oil filter wrench and twist, so it was sarcastic

you can also try and pierce the oil filter with a phillips head screw driver and break the seal.. if you can get it off by hand..

I feel your pain....I have fought with it for so long that I gave up....another thing that I still have to try is buy the oil filter cap and attach it to a long and skinny breaker bar. It should have enough room for you to break the filter loose, once it is loose, you can use your hand to unscrew it.
The problem for me is that I CAN reach my hand to the filter, but the angle is so akward that I don't have enough strength to break the filter loose since it's quite tight.

yeah but until then i need the filter off
If you remove the brackets you'll have more room to reach the filter. Hence my suggestion.

Worst case scenario, go under the car car and stab that bitch with a screw driver and twist it off. When you put the new one in, make sure you lube the rubber sealant with oil and hand tighten it. If you dont lube the rubber sealant, you will probably have this problem again later down the road.

happened to me once. oil filter was really stuck. got a screwdriver and stabbed it all the way thru. works wonders but messy :loco:

Ive heard you can stab the filter and then use a string to pull it down and loosesn it. Thats what i heard from a buddy og mine who has an SR.

I've never had any problems reaching it from behind the lower arm and I'm a size 8 glove... You must have gorilla hands or something.

No kidding. What is it with these kids buying stuff they don't know how to work on? I've got enormous hands and I got my friend's sr oil filter off no problem with the filter wrench.

i love having small chinese man sized hands.
i can even work on a 300zx (though i still hate doing it.) lol
but finding gloves that fit can be a problem.

K&N Oil Filters FTW
Use one of those they have a nut like piece that you can put a wrench on to loosen
But careful if you sticking metal object around the Alt I fried the 75amp fuse once

It's not that hard to figure out. If you've never done it before, it's a bitch, but you have a lot of options to try.
Personally, I tried stabbing it through with a screwdriver from below, but even then I didn't have enough room to turn the damn screwdriver.
Buy an oil filter wrench, but NOT the strap type. You can either buy the adjustable filter wrench like DRIFTING_SIL_EIGHTY mentioned, or buy the cheaper cap-type wrench specifically for the SR filter that costs like $3.00 at Autozone. I did the latter, the filter was off in a minute or two.

Man sounds like the filter is kicking your ass.
Ummm yeah I just squeeze my hand and arm through wherever I can and just untighten the bitch by hand but obviously you already missed that option.
Just go out and grab the tools like all of the above mentioned.
I do so many oil changes on mine it's not even funny. Just make sure that you lube the area where the filter meets the oil block and hand tighten the bitch. Once I have it tight I turn back one and it usually just comes right out when I go to change it.

Gotta just reach in from the top and twist that thing off man. Get a flashlight if you can't see it because i don't have a problem finding mine.

A MUST for SR owners.
Just throw a 1" ratchet in there and you're DONE.
Plus it's one of the best oil filters on the market.
(Not trying to sell filters , I used these before I worked here.)

BAHAHHHHHH Here comes the K/N marketer trying to sell filters!!! (j/K)
I have huge 200lb german man sized arms and hands, and can reach my left and right hand under the intake manifold and twist it off with both hands. I make sure its clean and use those "mechanix" brand gloves (a clean set) to get a good grip.
Personally, if this doesn't work I would move onto the wrench first, because when you poke holes in the filters with a screwdriver, if they are REALLY on there tight, putting the wrench on it later will just tear it.
But, yes, this is a PITA some times, and if you are swapping in an SR, make sure you loosen the filter the engine came with first, those old Japanese filters are usually the worst.

Mechanix gloves are godly. We put like 10 pairs of the blue ones on clearance for $5 a set, and I bought all the XL. I love those gloves...:D

Remove the intake manifold supporting brackets.
This was how I got mine off.
IIRC, it's a Y-shaped bracket being held on by 3 12mm bolts. There's actually two different ways that I found to get to the filter from under the car. One's shimmying your hand by the alternator and the other is after removing the intake manifold bracket. You can't do shit unless you remove the bracket. After removing the bracket, I used one of these:

Just grip the filter so tight that you dent it.

HOLY SHIT!! this is not a joke.
SELL YOUR CAR!
you will have a wieght lifted off your shoulders in a instant.
if you can't handle the oil change bro, you have a LONG BUMPY ROAD AHEAD! esp if car was not built properly.
GOOD LUCK, I use hands first like dude said both hands if need be.
then the wrench pictured above...
wow, really wow, PUSH it to a oil change place.
