From what I have seen the bees have no way to physically harm the hornets.
They would damn sure fight though. It would be like a 5,000 to 1 fight and the hornets would still come out on top.

Those hornets were brutal! I remember seeing a discover channel/animal planet/tlc/whatever special on these insects. Some scientist purposefully put a bot fly maggot onto his hand to show everyone how it burrows into your skin.

OMFG WTF?!?!?!?!?!? :eek2:

"Belostomatinae females oviposit on the males' dorsum. The male will raise the eggs exposing them to air periodically to discourage the growth of fungus and maintain the viability of the eggs, or conduct a series of movements below the water known as brood pumping that increases the amount of oxygen diffusion. The eggs will hatch in approximately three weeks but their hatching time will decrease as temperature rises.'

just eggs, son. not sure about the red shit, but the tubes are eggs on a whipped bug's back.

I have one of these RadioShack pocket microscopes, I used to always look at dead bugs with it, some some look crazy weird up close. Once I had a tick on my arm and I looked at it through the microscope and I could clearly see it going vampire on my blood, it was really disturbing.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31533APYJFL._AA280_.jpg
By the way if you have an extra 10$ laying around I recommend you pick one of those up, you can see some really interesting things through them, and the view is better than any of the science microscopes I've ever used at school.

actually, on nat. geo. i think, they were doing a story about these hornets....20 or 30 of them ended up attacking a hive of thousands of africanized bees....all hornets survived

africanized bees: 0

They mentioned that in that article at the beginning of this post too, then went on to explain how the hornets ate what they wanted of their kill.

^^ japanese bees actually have ways to kill the hornets....its just european bees that are helpless because the have not evolved with the japanese hornets as predators...they are an invasive species or many times european bees are in japan cause they produce more honey than the native bees.....

the Japanese honey bees kill the hornets by swarming all over the scout hornet....they swarm on it then vibrate their bodies which causes the temperature inside the swarm to rise to where the hornet just basically gets cooked to death and never returns to let the rest of the hornet colony know where the bee hive is

I've been stung by a bullet ant. It definitely sucks, and while I haven't been shot, I'm guessing it's not as bad as that. I did lose some sensation and control in the arm that got stung for a few hours, which was unnerving.

I also have some friends who have had botflies. One girl had one on her ass, and a guy had 5-6 of them, all on his shoulder or upper back. It looks like a huge infected pimple, and the larvae are indeed huge. They breathe through a small tube, and supposedly you can put a piece of meat over the larva and it will burrow up into the meat because you've blocked off it's air supply. The people I knew just ripped them out though, kind of like popping a huge zit.

I guess the moral of the story is: be careful in Costa Rica and other tropical places where everything wants to either sting you or live in you :)
