View Full Version : Bucket Seat recommendations
Need some sugguestions for bucket seats for my S14. I'm 6'1 and 165lbs.
I know its the best to actually sit in these seats but unfortunately its easier said then done. If anyone can chime in and make some recommendations on good seats that would met the following criteria:
1) Good bang for the dollar
2) reliable/safe (don't want the seat to fall apart in a crash)
3) can use good rails (like bride fg or nagisa)
4) good place to get order one
I'd like to keep my budget around $300-400 for a good seat
Thanks,
Paul

Buddy club vs signal seat?? Thoughts?
I wouldn't "recommend" either, but if I had to choose between the two, Buddy Club
Signal seats (i.e same as Chargespeed) are pretty flexy, moreso than I prefer
Buddy Clubs are probably best bang for buck in that price range, but the looks are so so (fabric pattern / material)
But can't be choosy when you are on a budget

Appreciate the referral, but please take note about what I am about to say
IF YOU FIND A BRIDE FG RAIL (for side mount bucket seats) IN STOCK ANYWHERE
BUY IT IMMEDIATELY
Even if you don't have a seat yet, but know you are going to get one for sure
BUY THE RAIL FIRST
Reasoning is because these things are never in stock, always on backorder, and not something you can get easily in a bind
Even if you have to pay full price, or pay $10-20 more, who cares, you want a good set of rails at least
Justin @ Westco was the last person I knew who had some in stock right now for S chassis

Has anyone tried out the wide version Buddy Club? cause I know, you have to be built like a japanese girl to fit in their regular seats.
Personally, I'm waiting for the new Panda Garage seats. Exact same as Thrash. blahzay blah.

I love my cheap Momo bucket. Uses bottom-mount (not Bride side-mount) rails/brackets, and can be found new for less than $300 sometimes. Very comfy, and I'm about the same size (too big for a Bride, for sure).

i have bride zeta III L and its really tight meaning my leg is really close to each other.. its hard to press the brake and gas.. my leg literally just stay at one position and kind of just swing your ankle.. but i got used to it and im keeping it.. im 6'0 and 170lbs.. my next seat would defin. be corbeau...momo or sparco... price is right and doesnt hurt my pocket

You have 2 holes in the middle?
I have the recaro pole position. It isn't in my car yet because the rails suck. I am in the process of making a custom bracket with the seat touching the floor.

Yeah. FG rails are hard as fuck to get.
Buy some now.
So you aren't assed out later.
I'm using fg rails and haven't had any issues with them.
The new nagisa D-lock looks to be better than their prior single lock.
Haven't tried it out but I'm pretty sure shits ok.
Recaro PP won't fit regular rails I think.
Something like they are too wide. But I'm not sure of that.

I know it works with nagisa rails, but you can only mount it on the upper hole and it takes a little persuasion to bolt it in to the floor.

Dude. Seriously. Are you serious? You cannot get a cheap seat that will feel like bride, or hold up like a sparco.
the only thing I will tell you Is that you get what you pay for with seats. Even more so than wheels. Sparco Pro 2000 is the only thing I would reccomend for your application.

To contribute, look at the Sparco Pro 2000, Zeta III sport, or at the very least, the Buddy Club one. Signal seats are a joke.

Are you kidding me? Buddy clubs flex like crazy. EVERYBODY knows this.
Sparco/Bride/Recaro is where it's at.
To the OP: I highly recommend going to a local dealer and trying out seats for yourself. What one person finds comfortable, you may find unbearable. When I was looking at seats I tried out a panda garage, a signal, a buddy club, and several others. I ended up going to a local sparco dealer and sat in a sparco circuit, sparco pro2000, and two sizes of the evo. Both the evo1 and pro2000 fit my frame correctly, but the pro2000 just felt really uncomfortable (tight in some places, loose in others, protrusions cause interference with elbows when turning), whereas the evo fit perfectly. FYI I'm 5'11, 175. I would look into the evo1 or pro2000 and maybe some of the smaller brides and recaros.
Bottom line is that you won't find a seat in your price range that meets all of your requirements, unless you get a good deal on a used one or settle for something uncomfortable like a kirkey.
Thanks everyone for all the advice and input. Much appreciated.
Unfortunately I don't have a local dealer since I'm in Ohio...
Few ?'s: Panda garage? Who sells those?
I might as well save for a Zeta 3...who's the best to get one from?
Thanks

It depends on how big your seat is. If you are stuck with the stock mounting locations and the seats are too wide beyond the rail's adjustment, it won't fit at all.
Anything in between can be adjusted. The brackets on the rails have slots that can be adjusted to center the seat to the wheel.

so it looks like the majority vote is for the buddy club seats. however, what does he plan to do with the car? if you plan to race or compete do you know what to look for in the seat? The best bang for your buck does not necessarily mean the cheapest good looking seat.
check the year on the FIA sticker. or if it even has one. check the rule book for what competition you want to race, so you know what you can squeeze by with. But you dont have to if you just want a bucket seat to use in drift get togethers/events/parties

Anyways, most people buy used seats that are, "fia approved" Yet fail to notice the expiration date is already up.

Who cares if its an old date? It's not like its a piece of fruit that is going to spoil. It's the same way with helmets. They might be technically "expired"..but you still have peace of mind that the seat was passed through rigorous safety standards.

Foam and other materials in the seat helmets break down over time. Impact resistance will decrease over time.
Also, Racing organizations are constantly tested and evaluating crashes to see were standards need to be improved or changed. What was considered safe in 1995 and 2000 may not be in 2005.

I threw up that pic to show exactly what you get with Status and I challenge others to provide pics of the Bride, Recaro, Sparco, Buddy Club and any other seat to show what you are paying for. The term "safety" and "FIA" have come up on this thread and I thought i would add a picture, not an opinion.

never seen a plastic fia seat. I've only seen fiberglass (technically frp) or kevlar or carbon fiber or a mix of the three. The frp ones technically are a fiberglass and plastic composite, so they appear plastic but are much stiffer.
We are both right considering that there are neither 100% plastic or 100% fiberglass seats. I just call them fiberglass because thats what sparco/bride etc calls them.

It's a shitty picture dude.... It's a picture of a nut and a bolt... I got nothing with my second hand SPG and am using a no name rail and the seat has no problems whatsoever.
So far I've owned two SPG's... One SPG with a 1995 FIA cert and my new, used seat is a Pro Racer SPG (another FIA certified seat) I'm dieing to sit in when I return...
I have nothing but love for Recaro as they're the only seat I've sat in that doesn't piss me off.... I've sat in plenty of Bride's and a few Charge Speed and a couple of no name seats. I <3 Recaro. Hell, my SPG took a HMMWV starter to the back of it and was fine...
Also my SR3 is another great seat.. Doesn't hold for shit but it's also built for a bigger person. It's comfortable as fuck too. I've had such great experience with my second hand seats that Recaro is all I'd recommend.
Edit: Both my SPG and Pro SPG are made from plastic and have an FIA sticker on them.....
I thought I had a picture of the FIA sticker but that seems to be the only picture I have of the SPG.

Edit again: Interesting... The seat looks like straight up plastic though but I'm not doubting that there could be some fiberglass used as the seat feels too light to be solid plastic.

Its the mounts that put the seat to the rail. I apologize for it being a "shitty picture dude".
Point Im trying to make is "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR". However, unlike everyone on this thread, im trying to prove the point with pictures because otherwise its just opinion.
If people are calling Ebay seats unsafe, post a pic of the mounting hardware, it will tell you what you're paying for. If people say the Recaro are awesome, post a pic of the mounting hardware. I for one want to see it.
You can say "this seat is unsafe", "this seat is flimsy", "this seat's cloth will fade", "this seat's fabric wears", blah blah blah........... but at the end of the day if you dont have pictures to back it up its all Internet rumors.
NOTE TO SELF: Dont post pics just opinions.

Scottie, pictures don't even tell half the story with seats, and also keep in mind that the best hardware in the world isn't going to prevent a crappy seat shell from snapping.

Its cool. I know you're not referring that. I've surveyed most of the nicer seats mentioned in this thread (Recaro, Bride, Buddy Club, Sparco, Momo) and I can honestly say Status is just as good as your top end Bride and Recaro's. I was just about to get a Bride (like most people) until i was able to inspect the Status.
At the end of the day, you have to go with what feels best to you. I think of a seat like a putter in golf. There are so many out there you just have to go with what feels best.

If you like, i can take a pic of me sitting in the seat for reference. Im 5'-10", 160lbs. The seat is extremely comfortable. Its their new GT Series (wider version). Their standard version is just slightly larger than the Bride Buckets. This one actually gives you a little leg room for heel toe because with the other seats my knees would hit.

I have heard many times, including this thread, that the PG seat is a Thrash seat with different lettering and from what I've heard people have nothing but praise for the Thrash seat.
However, it seems there aren't many people running the PG seat, am I missing something?

lmao we're in the same dilemma, except im 6'2 and 270lbs, im working on reducing my fat mass, but still i am quite large shoulders/legs/etc...
I am still undecided on what i will get... i need to test in real life seats... on paper values are useless to me ultimately... :/
I used to be 180lbs 6'2 lol i was very bony (well still big/cut but to me its bony compared to now plus being tall, same now.. i dont reaaally look fat as im tall lol) could fit into anything... but it was still a little tight in most of the smaller seats.. so imagine now... my shoulders/legs/hips are huge... :(
I have a workout schedule planned out for 3 months straight without stop... every day, only one day off (which is 1 hour of stretching/light cardio actually)... we'll see what happens in 3 months from now haha... ive already done two weeks... lost 5-10lbs since beginning of this month though (diet too since my wife and I got our own appartment -- no more mom over feeding me hahahaha).
Marriage does wonders to one's athleticism lol... I went from 180lbs endurance fighter/mma (well not ufc but u get the idea) to 260lbs lazy ass/non flexible bubba in like 3 months or something... then i started working out one month went from 260lbs to 245lbs all pumped lol... then went to night shift for 3 months and became 270lbs... and then not too long ago 280lbs... and here i am now.. back down to 270lbs and pumping mass and cardio again :P I need to lose lots of fat and get cut again :keke:
Best bucket seat = loose weight lol

But with all the Greco training its put some serious muscle mass on my shoulders and upper body making my Buddy Club 'wide' seat kind of overly tight up top. I feel my shoulders are being squeezed in sometimes making it hard to shift. If money permits I recommend the EVO 2 or 3 to any stocky meat-head type of guy. lol.

I have heard many times, including this thread, that the PG seat is a Thrash seat with different lettering and from what I've heard people have nothing but praise for the Thrash seat.
However, it seems there aren't many people running the PG seat, am I missing something?
So far my top two picks are used bride or a PG seat. Any info guys?
NOOOOOOOO wrong!
PG seat looks very similar, but the Thrash is waaaaaaaayyyy better. Ask around

If you want a good seat for pretty cheap price, you should check out the Cobra Monaco S. They run for about $290 each.

My friend and I just installed the Memoryfab S68 seat in his s13. Fits real good on me 5'10 170lbs 33waist and flexes as much as my Recaro SPG, but a little be lower and wider. I tried their FIA seat and it was the same feel except the FIA seat is only available in the smaller model.
The sales guy said they always have low position single and dual locking rails in stock for S13 and 14, also showed me the stock :hs: I compared my Bride FG Rails to my friends and the Bride rails sit actually about 3/4 of an inch higher than his. It doesn't matter to me because the Bride rails are already low for me, I like the stock height.

Anyone here who's using or used the buddy club seat in regular sizing have any issues of fitment? I ordered a wide but then changed it to the regular so hopefully it wont be too tight of a fit for me. Im 5'9 about 180 pds with a 33 inch waist.

It might be a bit tight on the jewels for daily driving but you will fit.

I have one quick question. What seat rails are people using for wide seats like Buddy Club or Memory Fab? Can you use Bride FG rails?

Yeah you should be able to use bride fg rails no problem because the mounts can be rotated around or slid back and forth. The main problem is that you might not be able to mount the seat very low....because allthough it will fit in between the mounts, it might not fit in between the sliders themselves. My sparco evo BARELY squeezed in between the rails (zero freeplay). Any wider and I would have had to mount it a good inch or so higher to allow it to clear the rails.
Best option for wide seats is custom brackets.

Can you take some pics of that seat in your 240? I want to see how low that thing sits.

Im working on that as we speak. It does sit as low i would like with the Buddy Club. I am going to borrow a friend's modified FG Bride Rail for his wide seat and use it to see where im at. The seat is not taller than a Bride Zeta 3, its wider. Thus i need to modify the brackets so the seat sit in between the rails to lower it. Right now I only have 4" of head room. I want 6"-7". The only picture i have is me sitting in the seat to show the bolstering compared to the average build (158lb 5-10")

Yeah that wasn't the issue with my friend, he is a giant 6'+, he can wear his helmet in the car now without bumping his head.
We also tried a few recaro seats over at griffinworks in SF, but when you look at the rail options that memoryfab uses with their seats it is was an easy choice. We compared the rails to the BC ones and it still sits lower, the only issue some of you might have is memoryfab uses a single lock like the nagisa. They do have an optional dual lock that costs more, but from my experience single lock and dual locking is not as important as locking everything down tight (I would just tack weld the sliding side if I am that paranoid since no one else drives my car). Also using a seat brace with your cage helps a lot more than any dual locking slider.
BTW Scottie, where is your FIA cert for the Status seat? I have never seen one on a status seat before and am a little curious on the code.
