View Full Version : 5 cars you'd choose ($1500 range)

I checked out the new Grassroots Motorsports Magazines $2007 shootout and it gave me a couple ideas.

For those that don't know about it, you have to buy a car and modify it for a shootout against other cars like cornering, 1/4 mile, ect all for $2007.

So, I got curious and decided to try my own shootout with some friends...But with a budget of $2500. I decided to set my car purchase budget to around $1500.

So my question is, which 5 cars $1500 and under would you choose?

So far I've talked with someone about a CRX w/ DA model B18 for $1400, I've also looked into some FB/FC RX7s.

What about MK1/MK2 VW? I don't know too much about them, also Taurus SHO for the sleeper pos effect. I'm talking him down from $1700.

CRX HF with a stock rebuild, new clutch and SI wheels, on a good lowering spring/shock combo... 35-40MPG, stock Honda reliability and CHEAP maintenance for the motherfucking win.
Oh, and moving this thread to off topic, where it belongs.

easy.
buy a totaled s13 and pound out the dents. look around, there's a 240 with a smashed quarter panel somewhere near you, guaranteed. 240's are light post seeking missiles.

1G GSX talon or eclipse. all the way, screw the turbo front wheel drive BS. AWD is the way to be. best bang for the buck imo. most of the time you can get them for super cheap too.

1990 dodge colt or mitsubishi mirage

toyota starlet

93ish 4efte tercel

mk1 vw

aw11 could be had for that price but i would be extra careful with that

im not going to reccomend any hondas, they still command a pretty high price for anything decent.

mx3 (bp-t mx3 is fucking fun and cheap)

older protege

older toyota/mazda/datsun pickups make great sleepers and imo look pretty cool in a old school way.

hahah did you guys even read why he wants the car? mk1 vw, mx3, eg, starlett, will all get beat by the other cars in acceleration alone.
On rx7club there is a guy building a FB to compete in this competition.

I say S13 for around $1k, find some used coilovers, brake pads tires, ebay intake.. the 150hp should be plenty.

1. mk1 vws are cheap and can be make pretty quick and they handle really well for little money

2. i recomended a bp-t mx3 which is an mx3 with a turbocharged fwd miata engine and ive seen plenty of mx3's own on the corners

3. a 4efte tercel is the prefect sleeper. ever heard of BACK YARD PRODUCTIONS?

4. starlet is a rwd tin can. do i really need to list ALL the rwd platforms you could swap over for ridiculously cheap?

5. i also suggested an older toyota/mazda/datsun pickup. they're light as fuck and cheap as hell. and share that ever glorious highly adaptive rwd layout platform we all love

6. edit: i forgot i mentioned the colt/mirage. 4g63 power. done.

1. EF hatch or CRX, from base to si, oem rebuild with sleeve coilovers (my personal choice)
2. FB. if you can find a gsl-se, waaay worth the find. (stock NA 13b)
3. mk1 gti, best look out of the 5 choices imo.
4. miata. gf's mom got a clean '94 m-edition for only 2000, you can find base models for less, too.
5. old toyota truck. 22re's are bulletproof. watch the top gear clip haha

I vote DSM. I bought a 1992 Eagle Talon turbo awd and only paid $1600 for it at an auction. Plus they are known to go fast for cheap...that is if they don't break........mine broke lol.
