http://www.jgadgets.com/2008/01/05/real-racers-actually-use-gran-turismo-to-train
because real racers use it too.
I bet you’ve heard rumors before that Gran Turismo was used as an actual training tool but have you ever seen proof? Well thanks to the Japan Times we now have quotes from big time racers that actually use it to memorize the curves of tracks they haven’t been to in awhile.
“Formula 1 racing drivers such as Toyota’s Jarno Trulli and BMW’s Kazuki Nakajima have been seen practicing in front of a console. Whenever a new track comes onto the racing calendar, like Fuji Speedway did last October after a 30-year absence, and drivers cannot get there to practice for real, many fire up “Gran Turismo.” They say it’s the only way to memorize the track layout and braking markers — the points where you must start killing the speed to take an upcoming corner.”
Now while that’s impressive on its own, the next bit this interview presents is even more incredible. Apparently GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi clocked over 1,000 laps on a famous German track and then had a go at it in real life. In his first 12 laps he was driving at 90% capacity and after a few more he was clocking times that rivaled that of the pack. This test and interview definitely shows that Gran Turismo has finally come of age as more than a game and can be considered a real-life simulator.
Here’s one more test that will boggle the mind:
“And how did Yamauchi do in his first race driving the Mazda MX-5? Not bad at all. Having done more than 2,000 laps of the Tsukuba Circuit in his game, Yamauchi only needed a dozen laps of real-world driving before he was clocking the same times as the rest of the field — many of whom had been circling that track regularly for years. But then, as I mentioned, Yamauchi is a good driver. The same year, he was only 0.4 secs behind Loeb’s best Le Mans lap time when they battled it out on “Gran Turismo” at maker Polyphony Digital’s Tokyo headquarters. “
On a side note, i remember playing GT2 for DAYS on end. Why? Besides the fact the physics were intense for its time, the random information about the car was cool as shit.
I used to go to every Make and read what information the cars had.

do you think the gran turismo creator would even admit to playing forza, let alone to try and learn a little bit about a new course? lame post!

I can totally agree with reading the random facts. Did that to probably every car in the dealership lol. I remember a vid of Schumacher and GT creator going toe to toe in a race. Schumacher would just keep getting faster and faster.

I just sold my xbox360 and picked up a ps3 last month. Im loving the gt prologue and GTHD. Forza was cool for a bit, but its no GT.
I remember when I first got a ps2 and I freaked out because they had a Fairlady ZG in the game. I think I raced every race I could possibly do with that car. I loved it.

I did as many as I could in a Black Silvia Coupe (CA18DET) rolling on Advan RG II's :D
GT is the best. I liked forza 1. forza 2 is way harder for some reason. cant seem to get used to the handling. oh well i don't play video games much anyways.
Gran Turismo was the shit no doubt but we are comparing an old game with a new game. The last GT released was GT 4 on December 2003. Gran Turismo HD Concept is a demo, therefore it can't be challenged against a full game.
all we are remembering is memories of how great the game was I guarantee you play it present day it won't be the same.
until, GT 5 is released I claim Forza 2 to be the champ

I've wanted to play forza, but i think the dynamics get to me. I've heard its not as realistic.

im a HUGE polyphony fanboy. I eat sleep and breathe the GT series. But when it comes to Forza 2..........I can no longer say forza is a bad game
Based on GT4, the physics are night and day compared to forza 2. F2 was the only game where I could feel the tire rolling over due to hard cornering and low tire pressure. The braking is far better because if you dive into a corner you WILL NOT be able to make the turn and will understeer off the track. F2 also handles grip alot better. In GT4 you can stick the softest race rubber you can buy and not squeal a corner no matter what HP you have......thats boring. In F2 its dependant on how the power gets to the ground. When using the race rubber you still have to use throttle control or you will spin. In GT4 its nothing but hard brake/turn/hard throttle.
There is still something that Forza CANNOT beat Gran Turismo on.....the presence of speed and the feel of the race. In forza EVERY car *other than the lemans and prototypes* felt they were going the same speed. In GT you know you are in a civic and you know you are in a viper.
GT4 was a letdown in so many ways, but I hope Gt5 will regain what they fucked up on.
If you wanna bring up the drifting aspect, it goes both ways. In GT3 the same setup worked for EVERY car and you can link entire racetracks if you kne your shit. It was very fun for an arcade feel or drifting. Forza was less forgiving on incorrect input and made you pay the price.
Gt drifting was fun
forza drifting gave you a feeling of accomplishment

I've only ever played GT1 and 2. The original was fun, but GT2 felt way too slow somehow.

I'm still yet to play Forza 2, but I think GT4 is a MUCH better game than Forza 1. I can't wait for GT5.

No fastback or S14 kouki in Forza2.
Need I say more?
GT4 FTW.

BMW's Kazuki Nakajima? He's a Williams driver and was formerly a Toyota development driver. You'd think the Japan Times wouldn't fuck that up, seeing as how the Japanese are obsessed with having their countrymen in Formula 1...
...and it's unfair to compare a game from 5 years ago on an old console with a current game on a far superior system.

I used to be a huge gran turismo fan, I even bought my PS3 just for GT5 and Metal Gear. I think I like forza more than GT now though.
I'm sure I'll buy GT5, and who knows hopefully it wins me back :)

I loved GT to death. But right now I'm liking Forza's sensation of speed, and physics, and nice graphics.
GT5 needs to bring me back to the Polyphony side.

^-- that video is comparing a demo on an early development engine to a complete game.
Not a good video comparison IMO. I will wait until GT5 comes out.

gt is a sweet as game and so is forza, but forza has a different style to it's game play, it isn't as hardcore as gt but it is damn good.

and plus the people playing in that vid suck, what's the point in everyone trying to compare gt4 to forza 2 anyways? they're both great games and it seems like most people in this thread haven't even played forza 2 anyways. gt5 looks sick, but I love the physics in forza 2. hopefully gt5 is similair.

Gran Turismo is better than ANY racing game currently on the market because it is the fucking original racing simulation game! Everything else is nothing more than moderately entertaining, GT is fucking addicting! I have beaten all 4 and i'm still drooling for more!

everytime i try to talk to someone about forza they always say, "psh, its to arcady", or "GT's physics are soooo much better..."
thanks to the guys who posted that forza has good physics as well.
ive played (and finished most of) all the GT series and forza 1 and 2.
honestly i got bored with GT4... forza has kept me entertained, and i like drifting a lot more in forza2 than i do in any other racing game.
im not ever going to be a professional race car driver, so im not worried about "training, and practicing" in GT.
im worried about having FUN. forza brings the most fun. so thats what i play.

Im a huge GT fan... its true there is a few things they need to add. Forza 2 is fun but the of losing traction as easly as you can with that game is a bit over done... plus you when a D1 top secret S15 and it drifts like it has stock steering angle..... F1 seemed more drift compliant... Ill end up picking up a PS3 and the new GT this year... i miss my 1000hp r34 vspec in GT3

Mel's take.
I've been a GT fan since GT2. GT3 was the pinnacle. GT4 was good, but just more of the same. I still loved it, but didn't obsess over it like I did with GT3.
I purchased F2. I must say that it is more realistic, but I still don't find it as fun as GT3 was.
I'm hoping GT5 will be the new pinnacle in racing sims. Seeing how I've been building a cockpit for it and will be dropping $300 on the new wheel, I'm REALLY hoping it exceeds expectations.

I can't wait for GT5, I'll have to postpone mods for my car to get a PS3 and a new HDTV, oh yeah and a logitech wheel.

GT5 has the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano in it. Wow, that's going to be fun.
I've always loved GT. I like forza 1&2 too, but like someone else said, the losing traction thing is overdone. It gets hard to just steady state turn.
I'm going to buy a PS3 when GT5 comes out.

ya i do think GT3 was the best of the GT series.
+1 on building a cockpit. way more fun, id like to build a dual cockpit in my garage but my wallet is keeping me from doing so. seats/wheels get expensive

yea but i doubt the 599 GTB will sound as it does on F2......
for some reason poly just sucks with sounds....Engine, tires, collisions
I love forza, GT just gets so boring to me.... but once i free up some money and get a job i wanna pick up a PS3 an gt5, maybe even the G25 wheel.

and you've probably never played forza have you?
All i'm saying is that I would not spend a grip of money on an x-box to play forza2, I WOULD go out and spend a grip of money on a PS3 just to play GT5. For starters I think that the PS3 is a better console than the xbox. But the main reason is that I LOVE the gameplay in the GT series. I agree that GT3 was the pinnacle so far though. GT4 is a bit too much with the actual 24 hour races and it is also a pain in the ass to drift in GT4.

I don't think anyone should talk about which game is better or worse if they haven't owned both. I don't own PS3 but I've played the demo.
And it's 100% fair to compare the two games.
GT4 Prologue was the same damn game as GT4 in terms of physics, graphics, style. You swear that Polyphony is going to make some DRASTIC changes to the game for GT5 from Prologue. It'll be the same graphics engine, same physics engine, some slick menus and more cars.
GT is getting lazy, and it sucks because I loved them up until GT4.
Turn 10 was a little lazy on Forza 2 as well. A lot of the models of the cars seemed recycled and they didn't improve the graphics engine much at all. 60 fps was cool but damn that game does not impress the eyes.
There's TONS of stuff I don't like about Forza 2, but when push comes Forza 1 OR 2 (actually like 1 more in some aspects) by far is more fun to me than GT.
And that's why I play games. For fun.
Who cares what an F1 driver plays. If he played NFS:Pro Street to practice for Willow Springs, I'd still say that Pro Street is a fucking lame ass game.
Not saying Forza 2 is better than GT5. But the outlook is grim if Polyphony doesn't do something NEW.
