I am doing a motor swap to an SR but money is a problem (things came up) so I was wondering if I can use my stock exhaust just to the motor can be in the car till I can go out and buy a "real" exhaust?  I need to save the $400-$500 for other things.

i really dont see why you couldnt. but i dont know. if i was doing that swap, i would use the original exhaust, and if i had probs deal with them later.

I cant afford to do that since my swap will be done out of state.  I don't want to be out my car for a long time.

u can use the stock exhaust - bolts up exactly the same.  only prob is its pretty bad...when i took it out to do my swap, i was pretty disgusted.  i really like the 90 degree bend right b4 the muffler.

If you don't have enough money to buy an exhaust, you probably don't have enough money to do a swap. Something WILL happen during the swap that will require more money then you may have set aside. Unless you have a second car then it's probably a good time to wait til u get more money

ok... are we talking sr20det or sr20de?

big difference in exhausts. if its gonna be turbo, youre gonna want the least amount of back pressure possible. which means that that 90 bend in our exhausts right before the muffler is no good. id recommend straight piping it. thats very cost effective, and powerful (only on a turbo becauseof the lack ofback pressure)

if its just an sr20de, (n/a) then our stock exhaust will work just fine.

save up your money some more and do the swap later.  like ca18 said, if you cant afford an exhaust, can you really afford the swap?

I totally agree w/ van & ca18.  If you don't have $500 of room in your budget, you might want to consider waiting.  I've heard that any time you are doing any swap, give yourself b/n $500-1000 of just in case money.

If, however, you have this but don't want to cut into it... the stock exhaust will work fine for a while.  Eventually, the dirty US gas will clog up the cat, but that usually takes a while.  In the meanwhile, you will just be missing out of extra performance.  IIRC, this exhaust (w/ the 90 degree bend) is fundamentally the same as the JDM spec (pipe size, routing, etc. - but the cat set up is different).

Well thank you all for the great input.  I did have the moeny for everything but some bad investments I am coming out short.  Well the motor won't be here for awhile so I hope things get better for me.  Anyone want to donate some to help out a fellow 240 guy

shit, just remembered...
the flange that connects the downpipe to the manifold is diff. on the sr from the ka.  the sr downpipe has 3 holes, whereas the ka has two studs and a hole.  u may not need a new exhaust (NEED, of course u'd want one...), but u will need a new downpipe.

but even if that is the case, wouldn't you still need  bigger piping to lessen that back pressure? the stock really falls short there.

As mentioned before, it definitely would be a good idea to wait till u got some extra $ to handle that swap. I would wanna make sure everything is close to perfect with the swap before closing the hood on her. know what I mean?!!

well, you wouldnt need it is what i'm saying.  you would be down on horsepower, for the moment, but if he's talking about just getting the engine in there and later putting on an exhaust, thats possible.  an exhaust with backpressure on a turbo is bad for performance, but its not like it won't work.

In my experience you will be lucky to get the original exhaust off in one re-usable piece. When I fitted my HKS system to my sr20det the stock system just fell apart! Save and get a nice 5zigen/apexi/HKS unit, you know it makes sense!!

oh that makes sense now.  I was thinking that the back pressure would hurt the car. My bad!
