Just picked up an S14 and the belts squeal. Okay, no biggie. Quick fix. But why does it smoke when they squeal? No oil on the pulleys or anything. I'm somewhat stumped.

One of the pulleys isn't turning, therefore causing the squeal. The smoke is from the belt heating up against the seized pulley.

Well, I checked them and none of them are stalled. I took it out for a spin and got on the throttle and either before the belt squeaked or after, the car bucked as if it wanted to seize and my CD player would turn off. The belts are new too, so I think I'm just going to take them off and turn the pulleys by hand. Any suggestions would be great :}

Are these new belts? If not they might just be going out because of age.

check out your alternator tensioner see how tight it is

try tightening it to get rid of the squeal

that smoke may just be dust and grime coming of it from rubbing against something if its too loose

good luck

Pulleys are fine, belts aren't to loose or tight. Also, the throttle pedal seems to get stuck around when it smokes. eeehhhhh
