View Full Version : It's just too loud

I just need to quiet this S14 down. It's got straight through 2 1/4 exhaust with an N1 style muffler. I'm going to add in a 4" round Magnaflow resonator. The only thing I'm struggling with is if I should get the 14" long or the 22" long. I want it quiet but I don't want it too quiet if that makes sense. I keep thinking go for the longer one as I assume it will be deeper and a lot more reserved. Right now it's so loud that it sets off pretty much any alarm next to it on startup. I don't drive it often, it's my wife's daily driver and she's gotten to the point that she feels it's so loud that it's embarrassing.

i'll trade you my stock exhaust.
or put yours back on

The cat is still on it, but the car has no resonator at all, just the straight through muffler. I'm thinking the resonator is probably my best choice at this point.

are you using the stock header?

Yep, still stock exhaust manifold.
u dont have to get magnaflow resonators.. juss get a generic one. haha
get one that fits thats all.
its reallie that N1 style. the (style) = loud haha. put a big ass resonator and then put a pipe so you got like a spec 2 looking thing haha

honestly its just the fct that your running an N1 muffler thats why its so loud. If you put on a big ass resonator your gonna have to sacrifice some horse power. if i were you i would just buy an oval exhaust like the one i have for sale or something like it. i ran 3 inch piping with no cat or resonator and never had to worry about getting pulled over. it was not too loud but loud enough to the point i liked.

I'm not saying it has to be Magnaflow, but the one I was looking at is Magnaflow. What do you mean Spec 2? The resonator isn't going to be visible, it will go not far after the cat under the car.

I'm not worried about losing a few horsepower, going to a more restrictive muffler will do the same thing. I had Nismo exhaust on my Spec V before I traded the car and the design of the muffler and tip looked good on that car, but with the body kit on the S14 I don't think it would look right without a larger N1 style.
the tip prolly looks okay... but 2.25 is small! haha but works.

Mercer is running a magnaflow can on an exhaust with an ebay resonator.
can't even tell the car is on.
who cares about HP, resonator is like 5hp at the most.

2.25 is about right for an N/A 4 cylinder. If it was pushing more power, I'd be running larger exhaust.

Yep, still stock exhaust manifold.
weird. i had an 3" n1 and stock manifold and it was pretty quiet.
but then i had to put a header on and now it makes me cry sometimes.

its all about having a load exhaust, minus the fact that you have to part down the street late at night. getting a letter from the people beside you about your car being to load is always awsome. my res on my straight pipe doesn't do shit so now going to get a de-cat just so i can slam the bitch more
in your scenario, get the longer resinator. it will bring it down a knotch but you will still have the deep throaty sound. take my advice and buy one that bolts in, on my old exhaust that was 2.5 piping with a hks high power muffler i had a resinator welded in and the guy who did it sucked at it and there were so many leaks. plus if you get a new exhaust you just need to unbolt it

You should get a glass pack... Those will make your car real quiet!

ROFL! Lose a few hp from a resonator? I bet you think your catalytic converter is a big restriction too eh?
To the OP: Either resonator should quiet your car down. Check out some sound clips (like the ones above) and get the one you like.

lol hahahhahahhahhahahahahaha
Seriously though, if your trying to quit shit down a notch, a 22 inch will definitely lower the volume and also the frequency of the note.
You only want to run the 14 inch if room is a question and you already have a decent resonator, on your system already.

"Fellas...I'm afraid you're just too darn loud." Name the movie and get a cookie =D
But yeah, just weld a resonator in there. Or another muffler even :)

Dynamat, put on stock muffler, or wear earplugs.

Back to the Future, my favorite trilogy.
Anyway, my experience with exhaust on imports so far has been fireball exhaust on a Civic with a 14" resonator and it was verging on too loud and a Spec V with Nismo exhaust. Without the header it was too quiet, perfect with a header, but I don't plan on putting a header on the S14. I believe the Nismo was a 22" resonator, or at least close to that with a oval straight through muffler, so I'm starting to think the canister with 22" should sound good. She still wants loud, but on a more livable level. After 3k RPM it seems get high pitched and buzzy, but all 4 cylinders sound buzzy to me nowadays. My daily driver is an LS1 GTO so I'm used to a deep tone and it drones on the highway even with stock exhaust, but it's livable. The S14 drones, but it's still possible to carry on a conversation at a normal level, so I don't think that's concern. My Civic on the other hand was a yelling match to talk to someone in the backseat, but I think that's more to do with a little 1.6L screaming through a 2.5" exhaust.
I'm thinking if I came across an 18" res or so, that would be an easy choice as it would be the compromise of the two.

Sounds like to me that the problem lies more with you and not the exhausts...
I can only imagine what you would think of my friend's EG6 with a Buddy Club Spec II that had the resonator hacked off and a fence pipe welded in place of or my friend's DC5R with a titanium Power House Amuse exhaust that had the canister hacked off..... Both cars have no interior whatsoever...
The reason why the Spec V was so quiet was because it was using a Nismo exhaust... Nismo parts might as well be stock because you really get no gain from them unless you're an old guy or someone who doesn't really care about cars.

Maybe for a Civic. This is a 2.4L not a 1.6L, a lot more volume.
Anyways get the 22" rez. More in the tone range of the KA. If it's still to loud chop the N1 off and weld on a Magnaflow Oval.

It has been shown time and again. KA's like 3" pipe.
Go custom. "N1" style is always loud.

if you want something quiet you can use the crappy dynomax turbo muffler, its really quiet it isnt straight thru but its wayyy quiet a friend of mine has it on his ka24de with headers and a straight pipe all the way till the muffler and its really quiet compared to most mufflers... and the HP he lost well its better to loose a few hp than pay 150bucks each week from tickets hahaha
