Find out your model of gauge, and hopefully you can find it here:

Generally when you wire a gauge, it goes like this:

One wire for ignition power (if using an electrical gauge), one wire for illumination (optional), ground, and sensor signal to the sender.

Generally electronic senders are usually one-wire ground that has variable resistance. I have never seen a mechanical fuel gauge other than just a dipstick.

If you don't know how to use a relay to tap power for the gauge then that's a different story.

the gauge has 3 inputs. ground I and S obviously signal from the tank, ignition input and ground. however according to the service manual that i can understand wire 20 i beleive it was from the instrament cluster harness is the feedback to the gauge from the tank. i hooked that up to the gauges signal terminal and i get a slight movement in the gauge but its not reading right. i know its the right ohm load for the car so there's no reason it shouldnt be working. IMO i beleive i have it wired wrong.

It uses a variable ground signal to show the level.

ok but which wire do i need from the tank to the gauge is what im asking...

I think you have the right one. You just have to calibrate the Autometer to work with the range of the stock sender.

calibrate it how. im sorry if i sound like a total noob but the gauge is rated for units that operate from 0-275 ohm or something and thats what the 240 sender works at so what ami calibrating

You need to find specs for the fuel level sender. I believe it's 10 full and 80-100 empty.

Pull the pump and measure it yourself.

ok looked up the gauge i have and it reads 0-90 according to the fsm the s14 sending unit reads from about 4-84 so i have pretty much the right gauge so i know thats not the problem. i played with it for a while and it shot up to full. played with it some more and got it to read below E which sounds right because there isnt any gas in it. going to leave it at that state and add about half a tank and see if its right.
