View Full Version : Defi DSSC gauge cluster installed on a customer's car

12-20-2007, 05:52 PM
I just finished up the install of a Defi DSSC cluster on a customer's car (Z32), just sharing some pics of this uber rare cluster...

Bunch of parts received with the DSSC:

http://www.splparts.com/Tuning/MikeZ32/HPIM1000.jpg

In addition to these, we also ordered a fuel pressure sensor, and a BF boost gauge and BF oil pressure gauge to be installed on the A-pillar.

Indicator lights, fuel gauge, power, etc wiring completed:

http://www.splparts.com/Tuning/MikeZ32/HPIM1002.jpg

I fabricated a aluminum/carbon fiber cluster for the DSSC, not as easy as it looks though. Test install to check wiring:

Control box installed w/ access to SD card slot:

All finished:

That is the same unit I went with for my s15. Except I got the NA model one since I was going with the LS7 motor. Have yet to wire it up.. Its a hard unit to get ahold of since DEFI will not import them into the US.

fancy!

good lord, how long did that take to just wire up? is it a lot of splicing and cutting or does defi actually make a "plug-and-play" harness type deal for the z32?

Nice :bigok:! How does it compare to the AIMS digital dash unit?

Did you add the oakley bag on the shifter to keep clean? If so, props to major attention to detail, I always get bitchy when someone greases up my shifter. Definite proof of professionalism. And if not, well extra clean job on the install, looks real good almost oem in the last pic!

It has to be spliced into the stock harness for indicators, warning lights, fuel level, etc... Defi supplies the crimp type splices but I soldered/heat-shrink all the connections. That took me about 3 hrs, excluding the time it took for me to translate the instructions...

Hi Jon!

I prefer the AIM for a race car, especially if you use a CAN bus or serial connection direct to the computer (eg. Motec, AEM, etc), makes for a super clean install. But for a street car the DSSC is a cleaner install because it has all the indicator lights and fuel level gauge built in.

That is the same unit I went with for my s15. Except I got the NA model one since I was going with the LS7 motor. Have yet to wire it up.. Its a hard unit to get ahold of since DEFI will not import them into the US.

Yup definitely not easy to get a hold of. Looking at the serial number on this unit, there isn't a whole lot of them in existence either.

Haha, the oakley bag belongs to the customer :)

Retails for about 240,000yen, sorry I cannot divulge where we got this from or what our cost is... btw, we are not selling this by mail order either (don't want to get our supplier into trouble).

Yes, I wired up one indicator light for low fuel. The cluster will show fuel tank level as well (was not setup that way when the pic was taken).

Just curious but why have two boost gauges? Props on the sweet install job though.

few questions.
1) doesnt the dssc have a display function for boost? of so, why have a boost gauge?
2) would it be difficult to wire in this unit if the car was using an aem ems standalone unit?

Nice set up. Does look like you take a while installing it.

The customer prefers some gauges on the a-pillar, easier to read while keeping eyes on the road.

An AEM EMS would make no difference on the install, the DSSC uses its own sensors, and the wiring for the indicators/fuel level should still be stock w/ AEM EMS.

Wow, thats a sweet unit! I like the combination of analog and digital gauges, and the amber looks nice and crisp.

Nope, the cutouts you see on the dashboard were left from removing his old gauges... the customer will be covering that up appropriately...

so once you figured out what wires went where you just matched them up to the stock ones and soldered them in?

Not saying this was the reason for the choice of 2 boost guages but I've seen where people would hook up 2 guages one to read how much boost your turbo is putting out, and how much your intake manifold is receiving. Its a nice thing to know when your pushing your turbo to the edge of its efficiency range.

so once you figured out what wires went where you just matched them up to the stock ones and soldered them in?

Pretty much, once I translated the instructions (I don't speak/read/write Japanese so that makes it tough), then soldered them appropriately to the stock harness. That is for the indicators, warning lights, fuel level gauge and power. Then I installed and ran the wiring for the sensors (boost, oil press, fuel press, oil temp, water temp) just like you would with any other aftermarket gauge...

seems simple enough...but damn i really want one but i dont have the $$ to get it when i do my swap. well i would but that would compromise wheels or coilovers.

Anyone have the pin-outs for this thing? I can't see the pics in the first post if they are already posted. Tried to PM the OP, but his box is full.

Thanks!

No worries lol, people just like to add their input in things.

I found a picture of a translated diagram, but it is difficult to make out. I have sent that person a message about it. Figured I would ask here, as there are two people in this thread with this cluster.
