I'm not sure if anyone is aware of this but SCC just put out an article for project Silvia its 89 coupe with SR20 and it details in full the 5 lug knuckle and brake swap from a 300zx. This same article also has them install a JIC Flt-A2 Threaded perch coilover system as well as bushings and lower control(trailing link) arms. They also have tested it and claim a .92g on the skid pad. This is a extremely useful article.
P.S. They also have phone numbers in the back as well as a section called doing it cheap(junkyard). Bad press, good press I don't know. Good for me though.

i agree. it's both good and bad.. it does bring publicity as well as give 240 enthusiasts some respect. howevere every rice boy and their mom is buying a 240 now. i heard a kid in pol sci class the other day tell his friend he finally sold his 2nd gen eclipse and he's gonna buy a "silvia" and do everything that they did in scc. now that's a goo dplan but i figure he'll do it a little diff. maybe with more stickers
well b4 u know it its going to be too hard to get a 240 and parts will become more expensive bc of the demand.. as well as more "cheap"(as in flimsy)
well we'll see how is goes. i can just say i believe its the begining of the end

I don't mean to come off as elitist, but fuck SCC. The article was very good, and very thorough... the problem lies in the rice factor that follows the mag; a high level of rice
Our community would be better off without the publicity. I've been trying to buy another s13, my wife and a friend of mine, as well as myself called over 80 used car lots within 200 miles of my house, and couldn't find a single 240 to even look at! The popularity of the car being bought up by kids who are trading in their 91 CRX or civic is a lot bigger that you might think! Props to SCC for doing the article right, but it's hurting the true enthusiasts.
It's true that some of the new people jumping on the bandwagon WILL NOT be ricers, destroying our rapidly dwindling number of cars, but they'll by far be the minority. As for more 3rd party manufacturers... wow, u mean I can finally get altezzas from APC for my 240? Weeeeeeee... all the crapass products from shite companies can continue to ignore nissan as a whole. In fact I hope and pray they do.
This rant is nothing new, and isn't going away, we can only do 1 of 3 things: ignore it, be part of it, or the path I'm taking... make the most badass sleeper I can and blow away the ricers with speed, tuning, power and knowledge.

I agree - too much attention.
FWIW, Don Nimi was over 1g w/ a lot less expensive hardware than than (tires and shocks, iirc). .92 isn't too good considering C&D got .89, iirc, in 1989 on a bone stock weak tired car.
AKADriver

C&D actually only got .83g from their '89 SE. They got .87g from a '95 SE, though. Still, all SCC's done to their car suspension-wise is add a set of pricey coils, fresh bushings, and fresh street rubber. I'm sure the 5lb or whatever they saved with the 300ZX uprights was truly worth the mention
Honestly I don't mind their "Silvia" project as much as their Neon project. First they start with a craptastic rental special SOHC Neon, then they seem to pick the most expensive solution to each problem. Of course, their Neon project only exists to begin with because Mr. Coleman didn't do his research.

one good thing that they did was that now manufactors will take some notice of us. and maybe the one that dont want to do a SR swap and hop up their Ka's. so who knows. but the rice is going to bother me.

Yoshi,
I agree, but don't forget some of the good things to come with all this publicity. I remember when I got my coupe 3 years ago...there was NOTHING out there. Now there are tons of people selling exhausts, intakes, suspensions, performance parts, etc. And you don't have to get raped paying for JDM pieces because a lot of the nice Japanese companies are opening up offices in the US. I love that.
I agree that rice is lame. But rice has been here forever. Have you seen all the CRAP sold for hot-rodders? They buy the lame stuff too. Truckers are worse about it. They all have the lame headlight covers and Chevy bowtie tailpipes, and whatnot.
Don't worry about what other people buy for their 240s. Just be thankful that by having an industry, now we can actually get some parts for our cars. It's nice being able to get coilovers for less than 3 grand. Now if only I could convince Rays to sell wheels for cheap here.

The articles don't go on site for a bit, usually a week or two after they hit newstands, usually the actual month the article is advertised.
If you order the magazine you get it liek a month and a half early, pretty cheap, I might order SuperStreet (its got good pics ) its only like 12 bucks a year.
I am happy with the mag though, I liked how they did a small feature on a shop then a feature on the shops car (i.e. C-West, RX-7; Feast-Racing, S13; some other cars and such.
hey, what's wrong with JIC FLT-A2s??
while I agree that SCCs numbers on the skidpad seem *somewhat* low for a car with coilovers and tires, I think they happened to make a v. good choice of suspension.
Or did you mean that you were unimpressed that that was the ONLY susp. mod they had (i.e. no rear upper arm, TC rods, traction rods, anti-sway, etc) and that it wasn't enough to get into a magazine?

They're not JUST expensive, but they are expensive.
My point was that the suspension's basically stock except for springs and dampers, and that I wouldn't expect a huge gain from that, especially since they're still on street rubber. Nothing against the Azenis Sport, it's an awesome street tire.

i dont think we are gonna have a rice problem b/c of that article. look at the mods they did: stuff you cant see!! thats what ricer's are all about, what people see and think about their cars. they may get coilovers for the drop (sure would be expensive just for a drop! ), but not all those sweet endlinks. they are like $300 for each set, and that adds up to almost a few grand in links!! they wont do that. they for one cant afford it, two it doesnt matter to them. now they can copy the exaust, and if they are rich ricers, they can get the SR swapped in for them. (hopefully they will so when the wreck i can salvage their engine for cheap! ) so thats why it shouldnt be a problem.

Does this mean that because of Dave Coleman's exposure of the tuning potential of the 240SX/Silvia, APC will finally make "euro tails" for my car. YES!!! I FINALLY GET MY RICE-BOY HIBACHI KILLER tail lights... Okay, bullshit aside. This means 2 things... 1) I can stop that asshole at the gas station from asking me stupid questions like "What kinda car is that?" or "Did they even MAKE those here?" and 2) I can NOW expect parts to skyrocket in price. Remember that the fact that more people WANT the car doesn't mean that Nissan provided the market with enough to go around. Factor in that 18 year old with a truckload of mommy-daddy money to blow on vinyl stickers and hood lights and that means that someone who actually gave a damn before the car ever saw run in a magazine will have to pay a premium for a car he could have gotten for hundreds or thousands less a year prior. Do I agree with what is happening? Yes and no... Yes, I like the fact that the car is becoming more popular and for some reason (or no apparent reason at all, depending on how you see it) our egos are padded when some rice-fuck says "hey, nice car." No in that I don't like the fact that the same aforementioned rice-fuck will sell his civic, keeping the vinyl, hoodlights and neon. This could all come to an end, however, with the assasination of Dave Coleman and the burning and looting of the SCC offices

As people have mentioned before, its going to be alot harder for "ricers" to get into the 240 scene b/c there really weren't that many produced compared to the high production civies.... and on top of that, the 240 isn't made anymore. Maintaining a 240 is also kinda pricey and so is the swap and conversions. Probobly and I hope that when these kids realize what they are getting into, they will stray away, b/c what it takes to make the 240 a great car is not its rice appeal, but the love for everything that we have found in this old KA powered Nissan cornering machine.
But hey, I whats all the hate about Dave Coleman and Josh Jacquot? Sure they are giving alot of attention to the 240s, but its not like anything ricey, these are things people who don't have internet will read and get alot of info from. These guys really do know their stuff and the two of them are regular competitors in rallying events (and from what i hear, they are pretty good at it too). They even work with the drifting god Steve Millen and the rest of his demi-god family. Sure they have alot of bullshit comments, and Dave needs to get rid of that picture of him pointing to an ITR but thats their opinion, they aren't trying to press it on anyone. Just like a newspaper column, people have their opinions and you agree and dis-agree with what they have to say. Its not because everyone is talking about the 240 that SCC is publshing columns on them, its because they have pretty much liked Nissan from the get-go. Read their first issue up till today, you can't find a single mag that doesn't mention Nissan in it. Ask that about Toyota or Subaru?
AKADriver
10-02-2002, 02:34 PM
They choose topics and projects for their articles the same way we all choose our topics of conversation... They talk about what everyone else is talking about.
The devil here really isn't SCC. Ricers read it but guess what - so does everyone in this thread! Knowledgeable people pick it up too.
If you want to bash a magazine for overexposure/rice factor, talk about Import Tuna or Super Street. They've both run 240SX features complete with glaring technical inaccuracies (like publishing a backwards picture of an SR and calling it a KA!) and photo shoots with barely clothed models.

I agree with yoshi on the part about making a badass sleeper. My car will be completely stock on the outside minus rims and the front lip (which is kinda stock because it's a nissan part). It's under the hood that will get the attention and shine...sr soon to come. Just my .02.

its funny how this topic has come up because the other day while i was driving i had two 240's pass me on the other side of the road, one right behind another ...i was like "HUH?!?!". i live in orlando and im damn sure that s13 and s14 are, or were, the rarest car on the streets... i've looked everywhere just to see how many 240's are around to buy and when i did my search the closest one i found was tampa... i dont know if you guys know this but orlando is a big city, to have to go 100+ miles out of town is shocking to me..
if there is one thing i've noticed about 240's is that alot of them are NOT riced out. i'd like to say its the surviving species in a dying race... but we will survive... viva la zilvia

Actually, i’m somewhat tired of the whole "label things 'rice'" thing.
If you’re an ignorant person, your ignorant, but personal taste is personal taste. If you don’t know something but want to learn, you’re just that. Some people like non-functional things hanging all over their econobox with a 10k pain job –whatever floats ‘yer boat I say.
As for the way trends could influence a certain established group, i'm not too concerned, or maybe I’ve just given up. Let people flock to the 240, there are just more important things, I think. The people who honestly are enthusiastic about it will still shine I think. Meh.

The fastback never gets any attention, but the only S13s that get attention are ones with headlight conversions, so I guess the flip-up style isn't cool enough yet for mainstream, considering the RX7 (C-West) had projectors on too.
