In the recent magazine of import tuner, shows the modification of unorthodox pulleys on the 96 240sx. Im just wondering if it will damage the engine in the future when i put them in my car. From what i hear it may effect the timing or something (not sure). Thank you

I will walk the thin line between peace and war by answering this question.
First off, let me say, do not start a war if you dissagree with my views.
Facts:
Our cars have heavy harmonic dampeners attached to the crank pulley.
Our cars have huge strokes, and cause a lot of vibrations in the crankshaft.
Nissan put the heavy harmoic dampener on there for a reason.
Having crankshaft motion during high RPMs will blow apart a $500 crankshaft, and damage other things, like pistons, rods, oil pump, and possibly the block.
And finally,
Underdrive pulleys do not have harmonic dampeners.
Opinions:
I do not believe in them, as the risk is so terrible that if something did happen, it would really suck.
I also think that the reduced rpm of accessories, like the AC, and alternator, could be bad.
Way out of catastrophy:
Have a harmonic dampener attached to the UD pulley, like SCC did with the 300zx Unorthodox pullies.
Now. You decide. Some people have had them for years, swear by them, and have had no bad things happen. Those are the people that will vigilantly defend the pulleys and flame me. Oh well. I gave the facts though.

I have the ASP pulley on my KA, it is pretty much a replica of the UR pulley except it is slightly heavier by design b/c they know about the dampner being on the pulley. I haven't had any problems but I'd imagine and have heard that if you go beyond the stock RPMs, you risk damage to the crank w/o a proper dampner in place. I rarely go into the 6K range and I plan on getting a turbo so i'm not all concerned at the moment. UDing the alternator and accessories isn't going to affect them that much, but will cause the alternator to generate less power. Also, the crank won't literally blow apart w/o a harmonic balancer, the KA is party-counterweighted but it will develop some serious crank movement and tear those bearings to pieces, wouldn't be pretty either <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
FYI: I know making the pulley heavier won't make up for missing the dampner, but every bit helps. I think the ASP is made of iron core and sleeving surrounded by aluminum case, whereas the UR is 100% aluminum, ick. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cry.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
