Sorry if this has been brought up. On my 92 hatch, theres a loud clunking from the diff. So I jacked up the rear so both tires are off the ground. When I spin on tire, the other doesn't spin at all so I know its not a open diff. How can I see if i have a viscous lsd, or worn clutch type? Can the clunking be a sign of a open diff that is toast?

Thanks for any info.

So the diff is bad right? Do I need to replace the whole pumpkin or will an aftermarket lsd solve the clunking?

you may want to check your drive shaft carrier bearing if you have not yet. that was causing clunking in my drive train. i just installed a steel one peice drive shaft which fixed the problem.

try jacking it up and leaving it in gear and see what happens when you spin the wheels.

YEAH, BRILLIANT !!! Jack your car up and have it running in gear. That way if there is an issue and the jack drops.
You will be instantly ghost riding your whip into moms house!

LOL

^+1 for checking the carrier bearing.

i think he ment jack the car up with the transmission in gear so that when you spin the tire it doesn't transfer the power to the main driveshaft.
