I wouldn't see a problem with it if you don't drive like a tool. last summer I would regularly drive from boston to jersey and boston to philly inmy sr powered s14.

depends on your individual motor, get a beater if your scared, it's 200 miles from sd to willow springs plus drifting all day then 200 miles home for me, and i've never had problems.

I think you'll be okay as long as maintenance is keeped up.

In the end after all the hype an SR is still a motor. And as long as a motor is in good shape to start and is taken care of, a motor will last.

Driving long distance is no problem on a well maintained sr20 240sx. The problem is whether you want to put that many miles, wear and tear on your beloved 240sx.
I have driven my 240sx a couple times back home from college which is about 800 miles away with no problems. I have a daily driver though so I don't put too much wear on my s14.
I say get a beater, not worth the risk and you can get a solid beater for the price of a new motor. You can find first gen dsm's in the 2500 range, fun to drive and pretty good looking.

Dsm's are gay and your motor should be fine but if you thinks its a problem than that gives you an excuse to buy another one :)

yeah like everyones already stated, if the engine is in good running order, and you're just driving to get there, and not driving like a bat out of hell the whole time....should be fine.
if you'd rather not just put the wear and tear on the engine, may want to look into something cheap, good on gas, and have parts readily available incase something goes wrong.

I'd have to disagree with you here x'ed. From my experience dsm's are probably on the lower rung of the reliability ladder. I owned one as my first turbo car in 98 and everything fell apart at one time or another and this was 96 GST. I had a hard time keeping it reliable in stock trim let alone modifying it. If you want a reliable gas saving beater, dare I say it, get a civic. But the 240 should be okay.

lol, i was about to suggest a honda. a few ppl have them in my family, and really never had any huge problems with them. (half of them are high milage)
Then again, i have the tendency to worry a little too much, the whole "what if" thing. I know a decent amount of parts on the sr can be cross referenced with other US cars, but i'd hate to break down with a part i'd normally have to order and wait a few days to get. (keep in mind this is the northeast cali boys, it takes a little longer to get good parts, lol)

i just drove 1700 miles in my s14 with a redtop sr. a serpentine belt snapped on the way back from picking my ex up in miami and i got it towed to advanced and fixed it there.
other than that, the sr held up strong. i checked all fluids and essentials before heading out. alligator alley..bumpiest highway in the world.

No worries, I drove my sr 2000 miles from California to Iowa, its just an engine(that I maintain very well). If your engine has given you reason to worry then maybe you should. You know your car better than everyone else.

Ahh...I guess we here in SoCal are spoiled. Almost every import shop now carries them. We got guys (in my area) that put sr's in their sand rails and they also stock oem parts. LOL. Over the summer I sold a guy a VG30DETT to put in his sand rail.

Its all just depends on if you want to put that much mileage on the motor.
If you can't afford a beater, the SR will be fine.

No, they are still a maintenance nightmare. I'm sure your friends is great cause he has replaced everything.
Which comes to my point of that I am sure the car will make it to college. But do you really want to have it there with all the idiots that don't care about it? Rather have a beater take the abuse from bad parkers, vandals and drunks.

Yeah, he'll never have to pull balance shafts or worry about his crank or buy +50 wheels or never get to launch hard or spend 8x as much for the same parts as a nissan.
DSM's are cool and all, but I guarantee you your buddy does not own 4banger, and someone elses car will always be faster :(

Come on guys, everyone knows the sr20 was only designed to drive a maximum of 400 miles at a time. Don't do it, you'll be sent into a time warp in which you can never come back.

why do all these kids forget its a factory motor? like as if nissan designed this to go in a car that would only be driven very short distances? wtf? Its no different than any other motor out there, if its in good condition it will be fine, if its old and beat to hell, then no it won't last.

like everyones been saying its a question of how well maintained your sr powered 240 is and if your willing to but the miles on it.... i say f- it tune her up and take the trip. its good memorys. Ive driven my sr s13 from Nor VA to North Andover Mass. and back with no issue and driving alot while i was up there for 2 weeks. plus NJ and back , va to syracuse NJ and back.... its a blast especaily when ppl see out of state tags then see the car and are like wtf! my suggestion for long trips is carry all o shit moment items just in case and go with a taller final drive... im sourcing one from a Q45 since i take at least 3-4 long trips a year

no just "sr specialty shops" sell "good" motors and install them with "love"
cough
Any car Ive had a hand in, is still running tick tock.
Even swaps i did 6 years ago.
One guy frequently takes trips from socal to SF, no problemo.

Either way it all is up to you. Everyone can say what they want but its you who will have to fix something if it breaks. Not saying it will but if it does then thats a problem you will have to fix so just use your better judgement in the situation you know how your car is running better than anyone

I made a 500+ mile trip in my S14 once, like 9 hours going the speed limit. It wasn't too bad, but I sure in hell wouldn't want to be doing twice a month.
If I were you, I'd probably drive my 240. I wouldn't want all my new friends up at college thinking I'm driving some beater.
Once my girl graduates high school, I'll be making a 3+ hour drive every weekend in my car to go see her. I wouldn't want all her friends thinking I'm some poor ass guy, you know? I want them to be thinking, "Asian in a nice import" and not "poor Chinaman."
I've really considered buying a beater for the winter to go snowboarding, but I can use that money to put into my car...Project Money Pit.
