i have an 89 hatch pretty much stock, and im having trouble at the gas station. i have less than a quarter tank, but when i start pumping, the pump auto shuts off after a gallon or 2. the amout it pumps at a time varies, but i cant pump all the way to full. this happend to me last week, so i figured i would try a different pump. it did the same thing to me today. ive had the car about 10 months now, and since i got it, the gas cap vents a lot of air when i open it. could that have anything to do with it, even though the pump has never shut off on me before?

Pull the nozzle a little bit out until it doesn't auto shut off anymore. Not to where it spills everywhere though. Or maybe you should go to a full service station.......

so its just me then. what about the venting when i unscrew the cap, is that normal?

my 240 does the same thing, its not just you. if i dont squeeze the handle all the way down it wont shut off, but then it still takes forever to fill my tank.

Yeah, it does it in mine also. I just pull it a little out and it's fine. The gas cap does make a sound of air rushing around when I open it.

All gas tanks use pressure. and the less gas you have the more air you will get coming out when you open the tank

I would remove the pass rear wheel and remove the plastic cover that goes over the filler neck and inspect the vent hose for kinks, especially if the car has been in an accident on the rear. And it is federal law that all gas tanks hold pressure to reduce evaporative emissions, that is what the charcoal canister does. It stores the gas vapors until the computer opens the vent valve and releases them into the intake. Come on guys this is common knowledge for car guys.
To the person who gave me neg rep for this post FUCK YOU. Next time grow some fuckin balls and say what you need to say on the thread. Rep is supposed to be about tech knowledge and buyer/seller performance. Don't get all butthurt just because you are an idiot and I had the balls to point it out. PUSSY!
gas station filler handles are designed for cars of TODAY... not cars of 20 years ago so the filler necks on newers cars are probably designed alittle differently... like was stated before, try not shoving the nozzle in ALL the way, should be fine.

There is a valve in the vent hose? I just stripped the gas tank out of my coupe parts car and I don't see any provision for a replaceable check valve. Where is it?
