View Full Version : is welded differential worth it?

I went to the junk yard the other day and my buddy and I found a welded differential, took it out and bought it.
Now I'm having second thoughts about putting it on..
what are some good things that it could do?
I hears it will be very easy to drift with.
If so I probaly don't wanna waste my time putting it on..
my 240 is my daily driver I want whats good for her.:2f2f:
so anyone who has experienced a welded differential let me know if you like it or not..
thank you in advance.

I am friends with a bunch of guys that run welded differentials and they all love 'em. The only downside I can see is that the inside tire will skip when taking sharp/low-speed corner's and backing-up which makes some noise. I have been told that it will make your car extremely easy to predict when drifting, but can slow down your entry speeds on corners. Your 240sx can be daily-driven with a welded differential, but it will make some noise.

Im using a welded diff on my s14 and it sucks to daily drive especially when its raining the rear sways left to right on a straight road not to mention when you hit a puddle it whips to that side. on a dry day its pretty alright you just get tire chirps when parking and on low speed turns... I plan on putting my vlsd back welded is only good for track use.

I have welded a bunch of them. It will make your car handle alot different. When you get use to it I guarantee you can take corners better. My friend has a regular lS v200 rear end and kept spinning out and sliding on a 90 degree corner at 60-75MPH After we welded it he hit it at 80 with no problem
Its according to your drive style. It can be annoying daily driver if you dont like having fun. The rain you have to be really careful you will basically drift every corner you come too. The churping will happen in parking lots and its not that bad. If you have a good clutch and really soft tires it will be a little worse but most of the time we dont even hear it. My suggestion is put it in drive it for a week if you dont like it then put you old one back in. Some peoples drive style it goes with and some it dont. I personally love it.

Yup its very good for drifting i noticed that you have more controll and can hold longer drifts, as the vlsd locks and unlocks unpredictably.

its great to f*ck around on but on a daily driver it gets old fast every time you get gas or drive around people they look at your shit like it suckcause they dont know whyyour tires skipping just put it on when you dont want it anyore take it off it don take that long

Consider that many professional race cars (like some JGTC teams) use spools. Spools function exactly like a welded. If they were unsafe or unpredictable in the rain, I have a funny feeling they wouldn't be getting any track use. As for daily driving...well it can be rough and if its really too difficult for you to handle you could always have 2 diffs - one for track days, one for street driving. They're pretty easy to swap when they're in the pumpkin.

i personally love welded diffs.... at the track... i was also surprised to see that no one mentioned the fact that welded diffs eats tires for breakfast... simple solution if ur daily driving ur 240 keep a open and switch out the welded on track days...

Save up and get a real diff...
I just pulled out my welded diff in favor of a VLSD...
I initially welded my diff just so I could have a "cheap diff" but I ended up not liking it for these reasons:
1. Low speed turns it makes a lot of noise... Sounds like a breaking sound but it's just the drivetrain getting loaded...
2. It sucks at the track (roadcourse)...Oversteers in areas where other LSDs don't...
3. On deceleration during turns it can rotate the car in a way that I don't want it to...
4. Inevitable tire wear...
But it did donuts really easily...
I'm going to stay away from the welded diff even though some have luck with it... Most of the people who advocate the welded diff are usually pretty experienced drivers that understand the characteristics... For anyone learning or on a budget, a VLSD or a HLSD is the way to go...

You don't want to go to hell, do you?
Then search.
edit- only use a welded in which the welder is trusted...meaning no junk yard diffs w/ unknow welders

On my last car, I drifted frequently on a welded and used an s15 HLSD on the streets.

one thing i noticed when i tried a welded diff car is that you understeer alot when you try to power over... but it works just fine when i would initiate early... unpredictable at first but after getting used to it felt ok...
its true about welded diff and rain... you'll also feel rear end slide on the freeway and you run over those reflector bumps in the rain while changing lanes...

Lol, this is true as well.
I have yet to track my car, but with the few late night tandems around the container in the back parking lot at work, with my friend in his S14, i have come to realize that the welded diff is very predictable and you can hold it long time =) STREET DRIFTING BAD!!

Welded = works for drifting = sucks for daily
2 way lsd = made for drifting = fine for daily
Like everyone else said I suggest you just take off your open diff and take it to someone who you know is a really good welder and have them weld it. And least you know the kind of job that was done on it.

Welded is the G.O.A.T.
Much more predictable, rain is fun, havnt tried snow yet. Only get minor tire squeal, no bearing noise or such. Do it. LSD's are great but everytime I save for one i spend it on power or suspension.

I wanna see a welded VS a 2 way drift just too see who is right!!! I think its going to be the guy who is most comfortable Driving his ride. I have drove a welded for 2 years now. Wouldnt go to anything else. Takes time to get use to but someone who can really drive can adapt really quick. With a welded no matter how sideways you are with enough road you can come out of anything!!!!
AS for tire wear I got about 1-3 thousand less miles off my tires so its not that bad.

I ran a welded diff on my coupe for over a year before selling the car...bills had to be paid. All I can say is that I loved it. The first time I entered a turn hot and clutch kicked the ass end just went sideways, so easily, and way controllable. It was a blast. True, you sometimes look like an idiot in parking lots, but fuck the other people. I learned how to drive 240s at the limit with a welded diff. My welded diff had been used for 3 years prior to me. So all I can say is have a reputable welder do the operation. Mine is still going 5 years strong now with the new owner. Tire consumption is not that bad if you dont drive like a jackass all the time time. About a set of tires every 2-6 months depending upon how aggressive you drive.
My two cents.

Welded is fine.
If you can't drive it in the rain you couldn't drive anything in the rain.
If your car acts funny with a welded its because something is wrong with it.
JGTC cars only run spools in the dry.
A welded will go a long way to stablize the back of your car while driving.

Gotta go with welded ftw. Have had mine welded for a really long time now. I was first of the group that Scottie(rb25drag) welded for. So I know I had a kickass welder do it.
I've had no problem in the rain, aside from having a little too much fun from time to time. I mean, don't floor it around slippery corners right after it starts to rain on a 97* day and you'll be fine. And it was great in the snow/ice too. I'd rather have it in inclement weather as opposed to open or vlsd.
And I think it's great when you're in a parking lot chirping your tires and all the ricers look at you like your car is a pos. It's priceless. They don't even have a clue. But if they find out, they'll all want their Hondas welded up. ftl.

Drift= welded
Auto-X = Big $$$ aftermarket LSD (Kaaz, Nismo, Tomei Etc)
Daily Driver = JDM or S14/Z32 VLSD
thats just my oinion but I DD my drift car in spring/summer/fall months with no power steering and a welded diff and IMO the performance i get from the welded when drifting BY FAR negates the cons of having it (ie slow speed manuvers like parking)
Take it for whats its worth this is just my opinion...but if u really wanna get into drifting I swear by welded as do all my drift buddies!

I think it's funny that only on a 240SX board would we be talking about welding diffs... I have never heard another import car owner discuss this before...
Broke/cheap 240 owners that can't get a real LSD do this...
And then they love the attention from driving at slow speeds with it and the fact that anyone with a socket wrench and a welder can do it without cost...
But the sound is coming from loading the rear end/axles/transmission which is bad and it doesn't perform better at the track (except drag and drift)... I improved my time considerably when I changed from a welded diff to a VLSD...
Welded diffs are only for drift/drag "track only" cars or for people who want to drive around the streets and act like they are...
It's not an upgrade...

ya no srsly...
but since i'm here..
before I was debating whether to get a welded diff or a 2way, I asked the same questions...
I don't know who said it but I will say it again...
Welded is fine for daily driving if you don't drive like an asshole.
I've only driven in rain or wet roads a few times since having my welded diff but never has my car felt unstable or the rear end kicked out... why? Because I drive slow when it rains to prevent that...
The tire slip isn't nearly as bad as i imagined it would be... It's really only when you're going really slow on tight turns... plus you get used to it...
So if you decide you're not a pussy and want to save $600 (welded=$150, 2way=$800), go with a welded. Just be smart when driving.
Also take into account, diff oil changes won't be as frequent with a welded which saves even more money/time.
I think squidd says he has never changed his diff oil since getting his welded... it's been years i think?

Welded dif aka(deathlockdif) is soo much fun!! i have been running on it with my daily for almost a year, but like everyone says slow turns will make your inner will skip and what not. When i grip drive i feel extra grip and for drift it comes out whenever i want it to so GO FOR IT.
Also make sure you know who welded it, bad welded job =danger!!!
Pros:
- Breaks traction consistently, makes drifting much easier than open diff.
- It's cheap, a welder will charge something near 50$ USD to weld. Replacement differentials can be found used for around 40$ USD.
- It's extremely durable when done properly.
- Little to no maintenance.
- In certain situations, and if driven correctly, you will have more grip in cornering.
Cons:
- Requires a different way of taking corners. Must accelerate through a turn, to the limit of adhesion, taking care not to break the tires loose and cause oversteer.

I just got my diff welded yesterday and I was concerned that the car would slide out all the time. To my surprise, its not as bad as I thought it would be. I guess it just depends on your driving style. If you're and aggressive driver, the probability of you sliding is much greater. It just comes down to knowing how your car handles and adjusting your speeds to compensate. It rained today and it was the so called "black ice" situation and I didn't slide or loose the ass end at all. I just took my turns carefully and didn't gun it off the line. It's going to take a bit to get used to all the new noises but its all good. I've been in several cars with 2 ways and to be honest, when turning with a 2 way the actions of the rear seem more violent to me that a welded diff. I spent $75 getting it welded verus a hookup from my boy for a Tomei for $740. I do plan on building a dedicated track car and I think I'll just end up switching this diff into that car and get a helical for the street and when I go Touge. Just my .02.

i daily a welded..its alright it does cool tricks but for high speed manuvers and on entry the ass is numb and powering thru turns with anykind of decent alignment is choppy.
if you car dosnt drive straight something is wrong with your alignment tho, other than low speed turning and high speed corners youll never notice it.

just got mine welded by luke (version 4). so far its a great jump from having a open diff. and i would also agree that it doesnt slide much at all in the rain.... i have alot more traction in general now then before, id have to drive pretty fast through a corner to get sideways. Probably the cheapest and most effective mod ive done in along time. Btw for those who do have welded, does your shifter move alot when you take slow turns while parking? i must have a busted motor mount probably.

Yeah, I would say the only added stress on the car is the tranny and axels. I've noticed after having the welded for a few months, my tranny feels like garbage.

its worth it cause im worth it.
I loved my welded diff for motorsports. Hell i've got a 900whp audi friend who can agree as he runs a welded in his S4. If the A4 turns to be a track car in the long run. The differential will become welded :P
