Ive got a 01 ram with the cummins.... just curious. Do yall leave it running ... lets say you run into somewhere for like 10-15 min or maby longer. I cut grass and ill leave it running for smaller yards. Ive heard it saves diesel along with glowplug wear and starter wear. Whats the final verdict? Anyone know...

keep it running, i use to do fleet work for semi's. unless it's going to be 30 minutes or more, then you're just wasting fuel.

they are cracking down on that, in CA if you get caught idling for over 5 minutes you get a huge ticket
thats is if your a commercial diesel not soemthing like a f250 diesel or duramax. im talking bit rigs with cat, cummins, mercedes motors that kinda stuff
I always keep it running, unless it's going to be longer than 20min, but once the engine is warm start up is much easier on components vs a cold start. So I don't see any real big deal shutting it down just to start it up 5min later.

on my 03 6.0 powerstroke F250 i heard mixed things about letting it idle for excuse time. But i ALWAYS let it cool down for about 30 seconds before i shut it off. Ive let it run at idle for a while. if you go onto some diesel forums there is a mod you can do for free its called "high idle" Basically you run the wire from the 12v hot wire located at your OBDII port to the PTO power wire located right behind your fuse panel. Put the switch and fuse in the line somewhere of course and mount it... Have your truck in park, engage the E-brake, flip the switch and it will idle up to about 1200 rpm's. very cool and only cost about 5 bucks in material most of which I and you prolly have. hope that helps at all..
BTW idk if your truck is moded but if it isnt then I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it. my truck is moded some what alot. full 4inch turbo back exhaust, SCT flasher tuner with custom tunes intake. intake mod. that right there made the truck feel like a different animal and lowered my EGT ALOT. And that in return was good for the truck and made it sound insane. But not to go on and on about it. try searching for a DIY high idle mod for your truck. very easy, cheap and doesnt allow the truck to jus sit there at like 900rpms.

Anything over 5 min I turn the engine off just as long as the engine is warmed up before that. Once the engine is wamed up, it takes very little fuel to start.

Everything with the above posts is pretty much spot on. If it's a short time I let it run and if its really long I shut it off. Also, if I shut it off and then a short time later I need to use it again, I dont let the glow plugs warm up, theres no point as they aren't needed to make a cold motor start. Basically I just keep an eye on the temp gauge and adjust accordingly. Mine is an 02 Cummings with no bolt ons. I have an air filter and have drilled holes on the side of the airbox. Saw same increase as a friend with an intake.
