I bought a coilover kit and was wondering bout the installation. Ive consulted a bunch of shops and they have no clue or dont wanna give up the 411. Some wont even touch the install! i have an 89 S-13fastback and have sone a visual inspection of the stock struts and the perches are welded. (i was told theyd have to physically altered...???) I looked at ground controls site and they have pics that are questionable. PLS HELP!!!!!!
Its a questionable install and dont want to invest the time to have my car wreck cause i left my wheels at the light.

I don't know why you messaged me directly, I read all posts that come up here and I respond to the ones I have an answer for. Sorry I can't help but I have no idea how to install coilovers.

technically, a coilover suspension simply has the spring coiling around the strut/shock body.  going to something like Eibach Sportlines is just as much a coilover kit as the stock suspension is.
In a true coil-over kit by today's standards, the spring perch is adjustable for corner balanceing, and the kit is the entire strut/shock body and spring, sold as a complete unit.  something like the Ground Control setup is more of a "pseuod-coilover kit" by today's terminology.
AFAIK, there are no modifications necessary for the Ground Control perches....  I've heard you need to use AGX struts/shocks... the only thing I can say is to contact Ground Control directly and ask them about it.  If it's anything like the setup on the old www.240sx.org installs section, you'll need to simply cut the welds off and smooth them over.  The threaded collar sits on the strut lower mount in such a setup.  In the rear, IIRC, the collar sits on the spring perch itself.  To be sure, however, contact Ground Control.

i don't know about you're particular 240, but as far as my 98, coilover installation should be easy as all #### (assuming shocks come with it), and i have absolutely no idea why they are welded in, this should be absolutely impossibe considering the whole unit has to spin for the wheels to turn in the front, IF the setup is the same as mine;
to take off the rears take off the bolt on the bottom mount, take the two nuts off from inside the car on the top of the unit, drop the whole thing out and reverse the process to put in the coilovers (assuming they come with shocks)
for the fronts take off the two bolts from the steering knuckle (removing brake line first), remove the three nuts on the top of the strut tower and drop the whole unit out, reverse process to install coilover (assuming shocks included) it's super easy
if the coilovers don't come with shocks (Ground Control) then it's a bit more involved. which i can explain, but won't at this point, also i can give you a much more detailed description on how to do this if you are actually interested in doing this yourself

tnord.... I'm pretty sure he has the threaded sleeves with adjustable perches.... i.e.. the Ground Control setup.  By spring perches being welded, he's talking about the seat of the spring itself, which is indeed welded to the strut/shock body.
I'd check with Ground Control if they are Ground Control units.  I'm pretty sure they'll be able to say what's necessary to mount them.

that makes much more sense, i was thinking the stock parts were welded together, which really really threw me off

THX all! with all the info i finnaly found out. I contacted Ricky Racer (suspension, Airbags,ETC.) I was in formed that the ground control types....threaded sleeve and collar type just slip on the stock strut...with no modification and allowing 1-3 inch drop! by the way they're $139 shipped...lower than i bought my arospeeds for. Recommended though is commonly more performance oriented struts to reduce likelyhood of bottoming out and blowing out a strut. Thanks again for all the help and now i have to find some good struts to go on my ride....AGX? Koni? Tokico? HMMMMMm any recommendations?

that price doesn't sound very right to me either. &nbsp;
I'd be interested in some progressive springs for the S14, custom sprung at around 450lb/in max front, and the matching rear... just as stiff as the JIC FLT-A2's <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>
