So I did a auto to manual swap all works fine but as I approach 2400 rpms and above, the drive shaft starts to smoke. What could be the problem?
Anybody ever encounter this?
its an s14 with a s13 tranny and s14 drive shaft. Could that be the problem?
Any input helps. Thanks
where does it smoke?
check if the rear seal for the tranny is there? or leaking?
fix that seal and maybe you'll b already
dont understand whats burning it tho.

Yea its weird I took it out just now and all was going well. I ran it cold, so its just when the car gets hot that it starts burning something. Not sure what it is. You think its a rear main? hmmmm i just changed those. ok ill check em out. Thanks man

did you get the correct driveshaft length? maybe its roasting the carrier bearing

ummm i dont know if i got the correct length but I had a non abs ds when the car was abs equipped. So had to shorten it about 1/4 inch or so. The shaft fits snug on the tranny but I suspected it was the ds to begin with.
What is this carrier thing you speak of? And is there a way around it besides another drive shaft?

the carrier bearing the large bearing/bushing that bolts to up to the chassis and joins the 2 pieces of the driveshaft in the middle.
Looks kinda like this http://www.arizonadrivelines.com/images/cen101.jpg
If your driveshaft is too long it will put pressure on the carrier bearing.

ok no its not that. the smoke comes from where the shaft goes into the tranny. smells like burnt clutch but its not coming from the clutch. So what can it be? This car is really pissing me off sorry.

Couple of things to keep in mind.
1) How much clearance do you have between the yoke and the transmission?
I have seen a yoke get into direct contact with a transmission, and never smoke.
2) Did you fill the trans with MTF? How much? Too much is alright.. the shit blows out completely anyway. Too little and poooft..
3) Is the rear seal leaking? Well shit.. Couple of mine have leaked, and they have neeeeeeever evvvver smoked.
4) Something else may be burning off.. If you used pb blaster and hit the engine or manifold (common), another leak, etc.
Put your car on a lift and see where the smoke is coming from...If you don't have access to a lift and are slightly suicidal (or poor like me) you can put jack stands in the rear, start the car and see if it smokes from anywhere. I've done this several times with success.. As you can see I'm still alive and kicking. I don't suggest this..but.. you gotta do what you have to do..

haha bart you're a fool bro. But yea i been down that road. Thing is that at low speeds it dont smoke. So yea im afraid to have it go faster on jack stands.
Anyways, the shaft goes in all the way. which is why i thought that the plate at the end of the input shaft is whats burning up or making contact. Then I filled it up with 2 bottles of MT fluid although it wasnt as thick as i recall 70-90 to be but anyways i poured it in through the shifter hole.
Rear seal is not leaking because I just changed it and have no oil coming from there.
I have an oil leak in the front not sure what it is but cant imagine that oil travelling all the way through to the rear of the tranny and making a big bonfire.
Ill have to put it on a lift and see how it goes. Thanks man.
Also btw, after doing a z32 brake upgrade is the break pedal very squishy? it works and theres no air in the system but its not as pressurized as before. I didnt install the z32 mc because it was rigged to work on a non abs s13. So i gotta find me another one.

Is your driveshaft snug? It's designed with a little bit of slack in it to allow for vibrations, chassis flex, etc.
You mentioned a small leak. If oil is landing on a hot cat then the smoke could appear to be coming out of tranny/shaft section. As suggested, lift the car up and have a good look.

I've had my wheels spinning before in the three digits. Call me crazy, but I'm poor =) If the car lands on my head, God can't be pissed cuz I killed myself, and it would make the bills go away lol. Thankfully I have access to a lift at work now.
Keep us up to date! If you want to drive to NJ, I'll put your car on a lift lol.

If you put too much gear oil in your tranny, sometimes it leaks out.
well for me....

It's the driveshaft, it is the wrong one. It is slightly too long and is putting pressure on the larger bore of the shaft against the rear output section of the transmission. You can't just shorten the yoke portion, it is the larger bore of the shaft that is the concern and most shops are not fitted with the tooling for Nissan's shafts.
