My check engine light came in a while back and I finally got around to pulling the trouble codes form the ECU. The code I got was 55, now according to the FSM DTC 55 means all is OK; no failure (No self Diagnostic Failure indicated).

So now if there is nothing wrong then why is the light staying off?  I have also cleared the codes from the ECU but the check engine light came back on and gave the same DTC 55. Does anyone know why the check engine light remains on? Is there something else I should be checking?

Any help/advice would be great appreciated.

TIA

Rick

You say you cleared it.. but did you really? *hmmm* Haha, if you cleared it and you really dont have a code being thrown, then the light should turn off.

is it s13 if it is, go to where the ecu is behind the passenger kick panel, pull panel back, use 10 socket and unscrew the bolt. gently pull the ecu toward you so you can turn it around. there will be a little flathead screw tab on there see what position its in, read the label, and if its in the diagnosis position then undo, if that doesn't work then idk. if its an s14 try the same thing if that doesn't work then good luck

Im guessing you know how to take the ECU out and check it since you know what code the ECU is throwing. I would try to reset it again at the ECU, if that doesn't work I would try to disconnect your battery and see if that resets it. Are you sure when you turned the little screw on the ECU you turned it all the way back and in the right direction?

Thanks for the replies...

It is a 1995...

Yes I do know how to pull trouble codes...these are the steps...

Turned the ignition switch to the on position, without starting the car. All of the 'dummy' lights in the dash were on.
Turned the 'diagnostic mode selector' screw on the back side of the ECU fully clockwise. The check engine light went off. Now waited at least 2 seconds, and then turn the screw back to its original position (fully counter clockwise). The check engine light begins to flash the trouble code -Counted the number of long flashes (1st digit), and the number of short flashes (2nd digit)....

Got code 55, again it means nothing it wrong..Yes I did check it a few times, got the same result.

Here are the steps to clear all stored codes and turn off the check engine light...

turn the ‘mode selector’ screw fully clockwise. Wait at least 2 seconds, then turn the screw all the way back counter clockwise. Then start the car...

The Check engine light did go off but the next time I started the car the check engine light came on again, I checked the trouble code again and again I got 55....

Not sure what to do next. I hate driving around with the check engine light on…

Help please…. Any help would be very much appreciated.

TIA

Try starting the car while its still in diagnostic, taht might clear the code. Ive had a buddy's car that acted funny that way and it was a 95 also.

Thats for the reply fliprayzin240sx. I will try it but can that cause any damage to the ecu?

Could be that you have another problem that needs the Nissan consult tool.
When I did my 97 black top swap, car would not rev over 2500, every one pretty much knows this problem. redid my MAF wires three times before finding a site in austrailia that listed Nissan MAF part #'s and found that I had a 95 SR MAF, doesnt really work with a S13 black top. It checked out fine on testing the Maf and still gave me code 55. 52F00 Maf solved the problem.
Here is a link to a good site http://www.plmsdevelopments.com/consult_if.shtml

yea i have a 95 zenki as well, and about once a month the check engine light turns back on and it always reads out the code meaning AT MALFUNCTION... my cars a 5 speed, and i think all the ECU's were the same for 5 speeds and automatic transmissions but its sure annoying as hell. if any1 had this problem and solved plz let me know!!!!
