the needle on a 96 240sx either: stays on zero, jumps around like crazy, or every once in a while works. i think the wire that gives signal to the tach is the blue w/ black one that goes from the cluster to the left side plug then the right side, then into the engine.

i checked the connection at the cluster and its ok. before i start taking things apart, is there anything else i should check out besides the plugs and what not? i dont know where the wire ends up when it gets to the engine either....am i on the right track here or what??

im not positive on this but im pretty sure that the wiring for tachomerter and speed and all that jive ends up over above the ecu on the little plug that comes off of the harness after the ecu plug...but hey i could be sleepy it is six a.m.

tach signal wire is yellow with a red stripe

so your not even close on that.

if your signal is bad out of the ecu use pin 22 iirc for cas signal, just tap into it and shoot it to the back of your cluster where the right colored one is.

makes sure your coilpack harness is grounded to the back of your head and firewall also, and all ignition wiring is intact.

now gtfo

Exactly.

Check that wire from the cluster, through the dash, to the ecu.

If your getting the correct signal and the tach still is not working. Your cluster board is shot. So get a new one.
