Can I safely getaway with 265 tires or even 275's on these wheels for street driving and a bit of autocross? I was considering 265/45/18 or 275/45/18.. btw I mean these particular ones http://www.wheelcollision.com/wccpix/62455.jpg

What car is this going on.... 45 series will be way to tall for a 240sx. To get close to the S14 SE height you'd need a 35 series, and even thats a tad taller.

96 zenki s14. with a 1jz. I wanted to know the widest meat I can go on an 8.5 rim, then decide what compound to get from there.

i think you've got that backwards, pick a size that fits first, then find a compound that works.

245/35/18 would be best. goodyear f1 GS-D3s and BFG KDWs are both great tires and avaliable in that size. plus Hoosiers and Kumho Ecstas if you're hardcore.

255 is the widest i'd go, the selection is a little better there, except for the race tires.

If he was hardcore it'd be Hoosier 285/30/R18's or 295/30/R18's all around.

For a street tire that doesn't have any cantilever built into the sidewall I'd run a 255 tops, although a 245 will be easier to find sizes in (EDIT) for an 18x8, which I thought was what those z wheels were. Can run a 265 on the 18x8.5's easily, but not sure if I'd go 275. Going bigger on a tire not designed to squeeze onto a narrow rim generally ends up in the shoulders bowing down, and losing useable tread (even on the Kumho 710's).
